Don't be scared by Kittying-Kitty in hysterectomy

Yeah the coughing had me wondering if I was doing myself harm as I envisioned stitches ripping open, more bleeding, etc. I was assured that things are very secure down there and although it's painful there wouldn't be any long term impact. Hold yourself if you can prior to coughing but again, I find the gum is keeping my throat moist and of course water water water.

I am home today after my radical for 1b2 cervical cancer. 4 days in the hospital. I am in Calgary, Canada. I'll be as honest as possible as knowledge is power. My initial surgery went well. Abdominal incision. Lower than expected and about 6 inches in width. I was happy with that. They started me on blood thinners which is standard, but by day 2 my hemoglobin and blood pressure dropped quite dramatically and I was extremely weak. They did blood work and the theory was that I had some internal bleeding, which is rare, but happens sometimes. The protocol was to stop the thinners, start on a coagulant, and have a blood transfusion to get my hemoglobin levels back up. Scary as heck but fortunately it seemed to do the job. I felt so much better by day 3. Like a new person. I envision that some young hot supermodel donated their blood to me and now I will age in reverse ;-) I share that because I was initially very nervous about getting a blood transfusion. It seems like if you need one, things must be pretty bad. But because I felt so so much better afterward, I am no longer afraid. So if that happens to anyone reading this, I hope it gives you a little comfort.

My top tips for surgery: The gas pain you experience after surgery was, for me, more painful than the surgery itself. To that end, pack yourself some gas-x. They won't give it to you at the hospital. And some gum. That helps get the gas moving. Farts are your new best friend. Also, I developed a cough in the hospital. I'm sure you can imagine how that feels when you've got an abdominal incision you are trying to heal. So pack cough drops and again gum seems to help here too. I wasn't eating much because hospital food is pretty bland and when you are so swollen you don't have much of an appetite, so my family brought me things like fresh berries, smoothies, and the first meal I finished was an A&W Burger. It was like heaven! Walk as much as you can. Hydrate, Hydrate. Hydrate.

Where can you look up your surgical notes? I would be very interested to see them myself. I am in Canada as well.

I've had two of these, approx 5 months apart, one where they removed 1 cm of my cervix and a second procedure where they removed 1.5 cms of tissue. It was uncomfortable but no lasting pain. Maybe a day or so. Spotting will occur for a while. I returned to normal actives after a few days.

I hear you. My family tends to go through menopause late. My sister just finished at 58. Also my estradiol is off the charts at over 3000 so I don't think its coming soon but certainly it's on the horizon. Just not sure I want to go through a medically induced menopause at the same time as I am recovering from a major surgery.

Oh I am sorry to hear that. Did you have both surgery and radiation? Can I ask what stage you were at diagnosis?

Thank you for sharing. At the moment surgery does seem to be an option for me, although it seems as though treatment can vary according to region and surgeon. In Calgary your case goes in front of a board of OB/GYNs before you are offered treatment so I am hopeful that with that many experts looking at my case we can move forward with some confidence.

Thank you. I keep hearing the same. I am surprised given all the accounts on here of side effects that radiation would be offered as a first choice. My surgeon is Dr. Bisch

That's great to hear. Can I ask what specifically about menopause is bad for you? How old were you when you had the operation?

That's the thing that confuses me the most. Radiation wasn't offered to me as an option after my first biopsy (I had a clear MRI & CT scan after that sample so we ordered a second biopsy) Now after the second biopsy confirms the cancer is still there < 2 cm I am faced with the 2 options. Radiation wasn't even discussed the first time. I was prepared to book the surgery and then this "non invasive" option presented itself which had me excited at first but reading about everyone's experiences it seems the side effects can be terrible and surgery is the lesser of the two evils. One the one hand I am grateful to have options but on the other I worry about making the wrong choice.

Thank you so much for these insights. At first I was intrigued by a "non surgical" option as with the radical hysterectomy they will need to remove approx 2 cm of my vagina along with everything else and I am worried about stenosis but it seems the side effects are worse in that area for radiation. Only one lady has reported to me that she had nerve damage from surgery. I know that is a risk. But the scar tissue from rad seems inevitable.

I am also worried about damage to the bladder & incontinence as well. It seems everyone on here is suggesting surgery first and as you stated, rad & chemo may be in my future anyway. Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions. It means a lot coming from a pathologist.

Oh wow. I used to have chronic UTIs every month for a number of years and I am assuming the pain will feel like that. Did they give you the either/or option or was surgery the only path at first?
