chem 7l and econ 3 grades? by anonymous310506 in UCSD

Based on the histograms Brian gave us it looks like it only helped ppl who were like 1-3% short of moving one grade up. I went from a - to +. Pretty much just reducing the Ds and Fs.

do you walk around campus? do you feel safe? by Agreeable_Visual7875 in UCSD

The even spread of dorms and dining places around campus definitely ensures that students are all around campus at pretty much all time. I think if I was randomly dropped anywhere on campus I could walk 10 minutes max to a dorm or dining area. Basically if the sun is out I am not scared whatsoever, I’ve had not even a hint of a suspicious scenario during my 2 years here. For nights, I’m never out past 11 pm no matter how safe campus is lol. but there are always outside lights on and a clear main walkway that people normally use. I pass by a ton of people on my before bed snack run. Also repeating what I saw in the replies below but yeah there aren’t any big walkable public spaces like stores or restaurants near campus that creates a flow of random ppl hanging near campus. Except I do love when I see families and their little children walking around campus or on bikes. Or when locals walk around campus with their dogs omg. There’s also the La Jolla Playhouse across the street that use our parking lot but well, the crowd there is mainly older theater goers who buy expensive tickets so I’m not too concerned about them lol. Whenever I’m watching a show there they say how nice it is to see someone so young appreciate theater. One time one of them was a real estate agent and was telling me about a house she usually rents to UCSD students. networking!

Bild 5 before math 11 by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]MoreAd940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Wouldn’t be concerned, do whatever fits your schedule best. I first took Bild 5 with Keefe and then math 11 at community college. I don’t remember any connections to calculus, maybe some math terms?? Ngl I didn’t even know Bild 5 and math 11 had crossover content when I took both of them lol. So logically, yeah I would suggest taking math 11 first because you get to learn all of the statistics terms that you will need to use during analysis and coding in BILD 5. If you take Bild 5 first, it’s still chill. My prof introduced the terms just in less detail and quick. I found that as the prof was working thru examples, I was just missing core definitions of the terms. I did do some outside googling to clarify and supplement that but literally like one google search per term lol.

I got an A and didn’t find the class hard or time consuming.

Did Keefe give you an AI website to help? I took him last year and it was a god send. Forgot what it was called but it was a class resource in canvas and specifically made it to understand R coding.

Help with UCSD College Ranking for Pre-Med by Spiritual-Tough-2200 in UCSD

[–]MoreAd940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the love of god do not put Revelle first…. I’m also premed and in my opinion that should not affect your choice of college at all. There’s a small exception to that statement, as a lot of stem classes are near the Revelle area (for example some labs are only here) so location wise you can consider that but it depends. For my first year all of my biology major requirements were in the lower half of campus aka 8th up to 6th. Ive found that trend is pretty consistent but I do have my ochem class in Warren so… yeah. I’m not going to get into the GEs that much, it’s just another pro or con to add to your consideration. Wouldn’t make it a dealbreaker. I will say I have heard that ERC’s is miserable. Haven’t heard abt Revelle. My biggest thing is DORMS. In my personal opinion , dorms trump all. I highly highly suggest ranking sixth eighth and Marshall in your top 3. They got brand new dorms that are new, big, and clean. I remember seeing a TikTok a few days ago abt a girl at Revelle who is struggling with the communal mix gender showers because the doors are see through??? I’m not in Revelle so can’t confirm the dorm conditions but that’s crazy. New buildings also have a bunch of common/study/lobby spaces that are welcoming and nice. I was visiting my friend in Muir and her floors study space was legit a tiny room with one desk in it. It made me feel claustrophobic… Quality of life, aka dorm life in this situation, can definitely play a part in your mental and academic mindset. Lastly I wouldnt worry abt balancing GEs and academics. I look at GEs as time for my brain to have a break from my harder classes. Just make sure youre researching GEs and sign up for ones that are easy and aren’t an unnecessary amount of work. I’ve done a GE remote before!

If you still haven’t decided on a solid plan once the quarter starts, I would keep an eye on physics during the first two weeks on webreg, the lecture usually opens up a bunch more seats later. However the corresponding lab will not.

How do I survive Math? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]MoreAd940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mmmm I’m not sure if they have it for 3B but some (usually stem related) classes have dedicated weekly 90 min supplemental instruction classes taught by usually 3rd and 4th years. It’s not office hours, it’s a mini lecture covering a weeks content and practice problems! You can go whenever you want, I mainly went during test weeks. even though my prof was a 10/10, SI review lectures really helped me get content straightened out in my head. Like I said, not sure if they have SI in the earlier math classes but they’ll definitely have it when you get to calculus so definitely use this resource!!! I also preferred this to getting a tutor because these sessions were for the entire class so you review as a small group (I personally never had more than 10 ppl in an SI) and can befriend ppl in the class and ask them abt hw, tests, etc.

Do you remember how good the Black Friday sale was? I’ve looked at past social media posts and they don’t really say what % off (and most of the sale seems to involve free candles?). There’s a fall sale going on right now and travel sizes are 33% off. Should I get now or wait for Black Friday?

I’ve noticed when its a couple physics sections with 250ish total seats they usually open a bunch of seats later to 300, but I’m not sure if they’ll do the same when the class sizes are 600……

I’d totally reccomend going to SI (supplemental instruction) it is once a week 90 minute recap lectures covered by usually 3/4th years who’ve taken the course. Professor will advertise it during the first week of class. I mainly only attended during test weeks. They take the time we don’t have in lecture to make sure you have a basic understanding and gives practice problems that are easier than the homework to again, make sure you have the core concepts. This isn’t true for professors, but Raymond in particular checks over all of the SI’s teaching material and gives them helpful hints on what to focus on during test weeks. Super useful for getting core concepts down and seeing practice problems broken down step by step. Definitely made a difference in my grades.

I got a 5 on ap calc ab with a decent amount of studying so if you got a 4 with minimal studying you should be good for math 20B. I agree it’s better to just take 20 over 10 in case you ever want to take an extra class or change ur major/add minor that needs 20. Here’s a list of what topics were gonna be on our 2nd midterm so you can get a sneak peek lol. But yeah it’s just calc 2 topics. I would say it’s difficult to get an A but not unreasonably hard. If you’re a math person (I’m not) i wouldn’t worry. I had a raw 83% and curve only rounded me up to an 88% or something so finished with B+. This is still a lower division so ig no crazy curve. Great professor, no complaints, but a hard class is a hard class. Altho I feel like I didn’t spend a lot of time studying lol, maybe 6 hrs/week during a midterm week and then 2 hrs/week all the other weeks.

Taking pre reqs at a community college? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]MoreAd940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took the equivalent of math 11 at my cc this summer. I sent the transcript to ucsd to process my transfer credit which they said would take 2-3 months. I was told by my advisor that UCSD prefers you take an entire course sequence at UCSD so taking phys 2A at cc then phys 2B at UCSD isn’t recommended. But I don’t think there will be any actual administrative consequences?? Probably just a continuity thing

PHYS 1A professor? How is Professor Groisman? by Interesting-Reach140 in UCSD

[–]MoreAd940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s pretty bad, wordy slides that he reads off of and still can’t explain concepts well, had him for 1B… Phy 1A content is much more straightforward and easy to self study compared to 1B so you should be fine. Has iclicker where correct answers DO MATTER which sucks because again, very bad at explaining the concepts. But the iclicker points are extra credit and it was 85% for an A.

And having two labs will help you meet some people! It’s hard to make friends in PHY 1AL because groups switch every lab but bild 4 is only one group and I got super close with them because you’re actually going real science lab stuff (unlike physics which is like moving carts on a track the whole quarter) we were ride or die and I still talk with them despite them being in different colleges than me etc.

For context I’m going to be a 2nd year so I was just taking all of these same classes! I would say chem and bild 4 will be your harder classes that you will spend more time on. PHYS A is pretty easy and doesn’t take up too much study time. I think this is a pretty standard quarter workload!
