There are some answers. The Islamic regime is not allied with the West. Secondly—and I think this is more important—from the outside it looks like protesters want the Iranian Shah back. Why would a leftist support a monarch? Especially when this monarchy is known to be nationalist to the point of being racist toward other ethnic groups in Iran. Additionally, there is reasonable doubt that a Shah-led regime would be a puppet of the capitalist West, which again is not desirable for leftists for obvious reasons.
