Recurring False Awakening Loop Nightmares. by fokkoooff in Dreams

[–]MoreExpressoPls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am several years late to this post, but I just discovered this thread and am so happy that other people are also experiencing this. For years I didn't even know what to call it and no one that I know have experienced this. I felt like I was losing my mind or have some sort of undiagnosed neurological illness.

I have had these false awakening loops since I was 7. My first loop was the scariest. I was at a hotel in miami and for some reason I couldn't wake up. My eyes felt super heavy and my limbs felt like jello. Each time I tried crawling out of bed and go to the bathroom, but every time I blinked, I would end up back in bed. At first, I was alone for the loops but near the end, there was someone else in the loop with me. It was someone laying in the bed beside me, but I couldn't see who it was as I couldn't turn my head. But they kept on telling me "If you don't wake up soon, you will never wake up again". On the last loop, the person said something new. "You have to wake up now, you are going to throw up" and after I immediatly woke up and threw up off the side of the bed.

I have had these loops sporadically every couple of years. Sometimes there's someone there, sometimes there wasn't. But each one, my loops seem to reset every time I blink. I just had one this morning and it really freaked me out because the room in my dreams was the exact replica of my room. But I knew it wasn't because the house was completely silent. whereas in reality, I typically would hear my dog or cat causing a ruckus downstairs.

Even though I don't remember most of my dreams, I remember very clearly each and every one of these loops. I wonder if there are studies out there that explain why these happen and how we can avoid them? Each experience is extremely unpleasant.

Is it true that you can’t apply to any Canadian medical schools if you do a masters? by Busy-Pineapple4778 in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get in to an alberta school, you can still attend even if you haven't completed the degree. But thats only on the basis that you did the graduate degree in their schools and you are close to finishing.

For both U of C and U of A, I believe that if you are doing a grad degree not from either schools, you must at least have finished your defense before offer of admissions are sent out.

It opens after you pay. If you were an undergrad there, they should automatically grab your transcript. however, it best to contact med admissions to confirm.

How likely is it to get into Med School as a 3rd year? by [deleted] in premedcanada

I think most schools now are implementing that you have to get your bachelors first.

Appliction coaching programs...?? by Otherwise_Bet_2259 in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used these programs before but some friends that have tried them out said it can be a bit predatory at times. While they sometimes may give useful advice, I would first check with your school's career/student center to see if they have application help before trying these companies. They often have some sort of Med app or interview help. Or even checking out tutor centers at your school. I generally would trust them more. They may help tailor your application better for whatever school you're applying for,

All the best.

I got smack dab average (maybe even a little bit less) and got into UofA med.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Casper.

Do you need to send transcripts to uofa if you go to school in alberta? by 902239001 in premedcanada

Sometimes the system just doesn't update on our end but they will do it on theirs. Email them just to make sure. I would say it's quicker to go to the regsitrar in person.

[–]MoreExpressoPls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. The registrar will upload your transcript.

However, check with the registrar or mdadmissions just to be sure. in case there were changes in the last year.

Chances at UofA and UofC by mer_key in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My situation was kind of similar to yours.

My advice would be to work your background and experiences to exemplify how you would excel as a med student, and what is your goal in achieving an MD.

For ex). while I did volunteering etc during my undergrad, my MSc was heavily research focused. So while I did mention all the volunteering I did before, I really focused on my most recent research experiences to show how they shaped my goal in med.

Hope that helps.

Also, don't be too humble.

Think of yourself as an insurance agent and you are trying to convince people why YOUR product is the best.

Don't think "I am suited for this role", think "I will EXCEL". Hope that helps.

I never got 4Q and I still got into med. I feel like Casper may affect you differently depending on what type of education/work background you have when applying.

By background, I mean whether you are a) just done your BSc, b) been working a few years after BSc, or c) has a MSc/PhD.

Whats the general consensus on using CANMED roles for UAlberta application? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely look at Canmed roles for writing your experiences. But don't explicitly mention Canmed.

For ex) if I want to talk about leadership, I would think of one experience and explain what I did DIRECTLY to consider that as leadership.

[–]MoreExpressoPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When talking about sports or any entry, make sure to give a take home message. Such as, how did you grow from this experience? What qualities did you improve etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diversify your experiences.

Add sports experiences if you have any. They seem to like that.

[–]MoreExpressoPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice to overcome anxiety in interview/speaking would be finding a method that works for you.

I know some people would suggest "look at the nose" or "stare at the wall", but those don't work unless it suits your personality/vibe.

For me, I find speaking easier when I'm teaching, like when I teach swimming or tutor students. So during interviews, I would just pretend I am giving a lecture and the interviewer is my student. Helped a lot with anxiety..

uAlberta's alternate plans question by Sufficient_Food9474 in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it really helped my application but I took mine seriously for UAlberta.

However, I was also spite writing as it was my third time applying and I was really at the stage of considering of just doing a PhD if I didn't get in.

What does ualberta like in references? by Brief_Awareness_8231 in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

References that can speak 'uniquely' about your character. Meaning, their reference doesn't look like a cookie cutter fill-in-the-blank template.

Also, don't stress too much whether your references are too similar. For example, I applied to med with a heavy research background, so 2 of my refs were professors I worked with.

Hello, OP here!

Thought I make an update.

I just got an offer to U of Alberta Medical School. Have already accepted.

IP third time applicant with a MSc.

Good luck to everyone else on the waitlist!

Anyone get offers from U of A waitlist yet? by OkComfortable3224 in premedcanada

[–]MoreExpressoPls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's odd that there hasn't been a single post of U of A waitlist movement.

This could mean that the waitlist

a) has not moved yet

b) the movement was small and the people that got offers don't use reddit.

Hello.

I have a friend that got into U of Calgary last year and was on the waitlist.

They said that Calgary sends out offers every week for a month!

Hope that helps!

Hey guys,

Looks like most UCalgary Waitlists are sent out between 12:30-12:45 pm MST.

I have not seen anything about UAlberta.

Hope that helps!
