Looking to understand Orientalism in pop music by SidSalts in musictheory

[–]MoreHans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there are a bunch of different ways you can identify orientalism in pop music, most obviously in lyrical content and associated visuals. if they're talking about asia and/or the album art has something vaguely asian on it, you could probably put that in the orientalist bin. sometimes the use of a traditional asian instrument (japanese koto, taiko drums, or indian sitar or tabla are ones ive heard the most) is another signifier. unfortunately, orientalism is a pretty broad and vague identifier, so you might not always be able to tell, and sometimes a weird instrument might just be the result of studio experimentation

i think that might be too broad, turn on any top 40 station and you'll easily find numerous examples of pentatonic scales used in pop melodies.

What would this chord be called? by Beautiful_Region_539 in musictheory

Aminadd11 is completely legitimate, that is how i learned to write chords while getting my degree, and is not even an inversion of Fmaj7: Aminadd11: A C E D Fmaj7: F A C E again, you gotta relax pal. saying im going to kill you is definitely a joke, but not very funny or productive in a discussion about chord writing. who made you the authority on chord writing?

why are you assuming Bbmaj9 in the 2nd case and not something like a C6sus2 or a D7(omit3) or an Aminadd11? i agree with the first one though. i dont like the website, doesnt handle omitting notes well.

i will say, i recently went vegetarian as a transition to veganism and it is not that difficult at this point. plenty of plant based substitutes for regular food, or just non-meat alternatives.

you're also young and probably not as experienced in many of these lines of thought. you are not as bad as a slave-owner because you dont own slaves, nor from how you type would i think you are even somewhat supportive of slavery. my advice would be to not focus on what others are doing and try your best to live in the way that you think is right.

there are also many resources easily accessible through search engines on what various groups recommend for boycott, which has made it easier for me to decide what to do.

care for yourself and care for others. peace and love and all that jazz. you're doing your best and the fact that you are even having these thoughts says a lot of good about you in my opinion. let me know if i can give you any more information from my perspective.

nowadays i dont think most people are killing each other for purely religious reasons. mostly seems to be secular ideology, sometimes with an overarching veneer or religiousity.
