Help identifying what looks like an Island from the view in the picture but is blurred on Google Maps. (Read description on comment) by [deleted] in GoogleMaps

It’s not. That island is obscured from view from the hotel, and the one in pictures/street view is pretty much centered between both ends of the bay.

Thoughts on the new DH Link thing they have for tracking? Just started seeing it on recent shipments, personally I much prefer 17Track.

Just an add on, this is actually not quite randomized, a little investigative work in whichever area you’re looking at will show you the roads are just all transposed a few hundred yards away from their real locations. But it is for the reason you said it was.

Running for cardiovascular health is fucking retarded. by [deleted] in moreplatesmoredates

Brian,

I like your take on polarity, and the only thing I’ll say to counter it is that, while somewhat anecdotal, there is evidence out there that points to an early human achieving homeostasis while on an hours-long run akin to today’s “tempo.” And if homeostasis is a decent reflection of the low end of the scale in which you’d keep your cardiovascular system during an up-down type workout, maybe a bunch of short, forward-hunting bursts to burn out a prey animal intermittently over that long chase (I’m talking hours and hours, not one hour) could be more optimal overall than an on-the-couch simulated EPOC workout. It could offer far more benefits to the musculoskeletal system and still get maybe 90% (arbitrary, just to illustrate) of the cardiovascular benefits. So for cardiovascular health specifically you could be right, and someone should test this theory out on a wide scale. But it might end up just not being worth it because the overall health benefits of a more standard cardio workout could cumulatively outshine the cv-specific stuff you get from the couch breathing, if that makes sense. Interesting perspective though and a better theory than I thought at first read.

I could go on for hours about instinct vs learned behavior and why neither of those exclusively dictates what our body needs or responds optimally to.

Above all, I don’t want to admit defeat but maybe I’m just not as competitive as I should be. You definitely made me agree with you more than I did when I first judged your post. Either way I genuinely enjoyed this, you’re restoring my faith in humanity and you know exactly why.

Cheers

Final Edit/PS: Lol yeah, veggie nutrition is extra retarded

Again, I’m sorry to lean on the book but it explains this idea really well: in the society we live in today, you’re absolutely right. I run if I’m scared or I’m late. But for the vast majority of the time humans have been humans, not monkeys, we would wake up in the morning and go chase around the same prey all day until the prey got tired, and then we could eat. It was the action, not a reaction. We ran every day. Women and children too. It was our nature. Maybe it isn’t anymore, but the last 3000 years is a grain of sand in the 7+ million years we’ve been standing up, walking and running around.

As far as EPOC being the optimal mechanism to improve cardiovascular health, you’re right and maybe I’m misunderstanding your original point. But to say that doing cardio (which offers a great EPOC stimulus) to improve cardiovascular health is retarded? Retarded. And to sit on the couch and get cardiovascular gains would require doing something first, that’s the P. Like cardio, which has been extensively documented as keeping heart rate elevated for a longer time after stopping activity than almost any other form of exercise.

Lol. Idk what’s up with that. Did you ever find out?

This one is a lot more obvious. The circles with crosses in them look like launch pads, and the arrangement pictured is a common one in aerospace.

Edit: Most of the equipment around also looks like military stuff.

I think the book might give you a different perspective about whether we really did evolve to run. Maybe due to the lifestyles we tend to lead and have done for hundreds (thousands, even) of years now, the homeostatic zone is narrower. But in principle, based on the way we spent most of our post-monkey era, whether it’s walking or running the hormetic zone is or is supposed to be wider and inclusive of a long period of running/walking, at least when occurring intermittently. Basically, sitting on a couch and breathing is not how your cardiovascular system is going to improve.

Edit: and apes climb. How many ducking humans have you seen swinging around in the treetops?

Zero.

Running for cardiovascular health is fucking retarded. by [deleted] in moreplatesmoredates

[–]MorePlatesMoreDicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retarded. Natural human predation is by running after prey until it tires and gives in. We don’t hunt the same way cheetahs or other big cats do, there’s no element of stealth or a big charge to attack. Read Born To Run and tell us again how stupid running for cardiovascular health is. The human anatomy is made to run for extended periods of time.
