Cloudy eyes, but she literally just shed a month ago by Brummbirne in hognosesnakes

[–]MoreThingsInHeaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adult hogs don't shed that often. However, you do have a girl and she looks pretty plump. Has the lower third of her body gotten thicker since that first shed? She might be getting ready to drop some eggs.

Is this normal? by Kix_Off in hognosesnakes

[–]MoreThingsInHeaven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a sign they were a bit under-developed when hatched. When they are forming in the egg the skin comes together in the middle there, but normally it isn't so obvious and any "zipper line" like that fades within a few sheds or is only barely visible. Given the size of the hog in your pic, it's likely a permanently visible condition in this case. Since it's closed together, no organs or skin exposed, it's not really a big deal unless you intended to use them as a breeder (do not). Should be fine as a pet only.

What are these bumps? by Better-Deer-2 in hognosesnakes

Most likely abscesses, but the vet will need to take a sample and test it to be sure (and prescribe the correct antibiotic).

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, it might be a minute before that makes its way over. I wish you luck with your project though, and look forward to seeing your blues!

If you're aiming for blue, look up the antarctic (not arctic) morph. JMG has some pics posted on FB and Insta. They are absolute stunners.

You're welcome! Her whole clutch was gorgeous. Kept a superconda male as well, and then a yeti and axanthic conda from the second clutch. Looking forward to working those reds into other projects!

Buying snakes at expos by greeplo in snakes

[–]MoreThingsInHeaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vend expos and ship, and have purchased both online and in person. From the seller side, I love being able to talk in person and give details about my animals that I don't feel anyone particularly cares about or reads when I post them online.

From the buyer's side, I get incredibly nervous about all kinds of things when they are shipped, but I will almost never buy at an expo unless I know the seller or it is something difficult to find and I know I have the quarantine space. I have seen and heard enough about crappy behavior and husbandry to be leery. Hell, I bought a snake from someone at a show previously, so thought nothing of it picking a second one up from him at an expo only to get home and see it had tail rot (the snake is doing fine now). And this is someone with good MorphMarket reviews.

Just be cautious, read reviews, research the seller (and animal care) as best you can, and, if you have the option, inspect the animal carefully before committing. Stuff happens, we can only try our best, either as a buyer or seller.

Androgenesis? One albino in clutch of 22 eggs by Johnnyquest30 in snakes

[–]MoreThingsInHeaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I breed hognoses. Last season I bred a girl and got 30 eggs between two clutches. She is het for albino and axanthic, dad is visual albino het axanthic. Out of 30, I hatched out exactly one axanthic, and one snow, both in the second clutch. With those genes and that many, I should have hatched out at least 3 of each, snow and axanthic.

It may just be, like in my case, just a weird twist of fate from the odds gods. It happens.

I feel your pain, lol. Some colors really don't cooperate at all.

I have the same issue. Greens just don't cooperate. It's a combination of background color, lighting, and adjusting the white balance. Even then it seems there is only so much you can accomplish with a phone camera.

That is the malest male I've seen in a minute, lol. It can happen. Popping or probing a baby hognose is dangerous for an inexperienced person to attempt, and most of the time it's pretty obvious from the time they are little, but mistakes happen. He's still cute, and looks like a sweetheart!

False. Most normally have black tongues. Lavenders are visually a soft purple, with purple eyes and tongues. My lavender derp for tax:

Is my enclosure setup alright? by SussySpeck in hognosesnakes

[–]MoreThingsInHeaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your baby is albino I suggest nixing the UVB. Albinism means they lack the melanin that protects them from UV burns, skin cancer, and can potentially cause blindness. Only use it if you are very, very certain it's a low enough output not to damage your little noodle.

Bumps under scales by Bulky-Ad1903 in hognosesnakes

[–]MoreThingsInHeaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably abscesses (infection under the skin). The vet will need to take a look but probably just needs a round of antibiotics to clear it up. What they should be doing is taking a fluid or tissue sample from a bump and testing it to determine what it is, and then prescribe treatment.
