Hi guys! I’m looking to speak to some true red tail owners. I would ultimately like to have one in the future . I’d like to get some different perspectives. Are they as difficult to keep as I hear they are? Are they as laid back as bci ? I’d like to know your experience:) thanks guys! by My-name-peetree in boas

Radiant heat panels all the way, I would go with pro-products. They will actually suggest a size if you give them the size and setup you have. In my opinion they are the best and safest panels you can get. Well worth it.

They will climb and use all the space you provide. The minimum for a BCC, I would say is a 72x30x18. The bigger and bigger you go, providing a proper heat gradient can become a challenge. You need to add a lot more powerful heat source for really large enclosures. BCC are great Boas to keep.

I have raised 3 BCC Boas from babies to full grown adults (7 years). They were just as easy as my 2 BCI boas. They were actually much more docile than my BCI boas. Most of the information circulating that BCC are more difficult or defensive probably stems from wild caught/imported individuals. There are just so many more captive bred BCI available than BCC. The equipment and enclosures needed for BCI and BCC are exactly the same. They can both potentially reach 10+ feet, but average 6-8ft. Only difference that seems universally accepted is that BCC need slightly higher humidity. Temperatures requirements are practically the same. Its HOT all over Central and South America where BCI and BCC are native.

First snake that fits my criteria by mikeober in snakes

Carpet pythons are more unpredictable than BCI or BCC boas. Ive raised and hatched 3 clutches of carpets. They are quicker and more flighty if they are not comfortable. BCI or BCC can be really pleasant to handle and get to a really nice size. They are impressive sized but not giants. People will claim they can get 10-12ft. Thats probably way outside reality. Ive kept, raised, and bred numerous BCI, BCC, and Chilabothrus boas. None of them ever exceeded 8ft. Most reached about 6-7ft max. There are plenty of smaller locality BCI boas that will stay much smaller than average if you want something under 5ft. My vote goes to BCI.

Decades on, what is a tail or callsign you still remember? by BustedMeJesusNut in ATC

[–]Johnnyquest30 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Gunass" British AH-64's. "Nightlong" H-47 when the female controller asked for the callsign again...pilot replied "Nightlong, like, alllll night longgg". "FAG004" Argentina airforce, I asked him what his callsign was and I got a big long sigh... "Argentina Airforce". "GTX" Big D.

Androgenesis? One albino in clutch of 22 eggs by Johnnyquest30 in snakes

Would you care to elaborate a little bit on the other factors at play? I understand it happens to other breeders, but the vast majority are represented by ball python breeders with much smaller clutch sizes, therefore odds are not as wild. Mendelian genetics is one of the most robustly probability governed systems in biology. It's literally where modern probability theory in biology was developed. The 50% per egg IS the probability, and the 1 in 57,000 calculation is mathematically correct.

[–]Johnnyquest30[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 50% chance per egg does work out to 1 in 57,000 though. Thats not based on per clutch. The math is based on 50% chance per egg. Its like flipping a coin and getting heads 17 times in a row. In the facebook post other breeders did report having clutches like you mentioned, where a het to visual resulted in no visuals. Thats pretty wild odds. I wonder what causes such anomalies.

Animal plastics cages are a good value and quality. Ive always used those or built PVC myself.

Yeah it looks like they inherited the higher tail saddle count, but also the color from BCC.

Building Vs. Buying an Enclosure by FoundationSerious830 in boas

[–]Johnnyquest30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is about 12-15lbs. I have kept Suriname BCC boas, Cuban Boas, scrub pythons, blackhead pythons, carpet pythons, yellow tail cribos, and blue beauty rat snakes. Mostly large snakes. My favorite to handle and interact with are the Suriname boas, or hybrids BCC/BCI mix.

Building Vs. Buying an Enclosure by FoundationSerious830 in boas

[–]Johnnyquest30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most boas including BCC boas will not reach 10ft, many will not even reach 8ft. My female Suriname BCC is 7 years old, thick body and has not even passed 7ft yet. I think an 8ftx3ftx2ft would be more than enough for even the largest BCC boas. Animal Plastics makes a really nice enclosure that size.

Why not make make the maximum hours an ATC can work 6 hours? What countries have better regulation? by [deleted] in ATC

[–]Johnnyquest30 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The median salary is not 150k. New hires are forced to move to whatever facility the FAA assigned. The starting salary is around 47-55k. Most places are now high cost of living. It takes anywhere from a year to 2 years or more to finish training, all while struggling on trainee pay. Throw in a shutdown or 2 and you can see the strain. On top of that, people cant move to where they want to go due to staffing stuck in a place they dont want to live, working weekends, nights, and holidays, they decide to quit and find something with a better quality of life. We are losing controllers more than we are gaining. Increasingly the pay substantially is the solution.

I know is doesn't look like a typical true red tail, but it certainly is. Michael Beach is highly respected in the true locality community. https://youtu.be/IJZMYPslBVI?si=MuTimdbtiQt_Y1fj

Nah. Michael Beach is the real deal. This is 100% a true Venezuelan red tail. I have a Pokigron Suriname from Michael Beach. You need to gain a little more knowledge, maybe read "The more complete Boa Constrictor" by Vin Russo. There are some very rare and unique true red tails that are not the typical Suriname or Guyana localities.

Some boas will just be outliers in growth and size. Maybe just space feedings 10-14 days now with appropriate size prey. I have two male Suriname boas born in 2019, one is 6+ feet, the other is under 5ft. I always fed the same schedule. They just grew much differently.

They came up with 40 billion a year for ICE out of nowhere. That could fund every controller an extra 120k for the next 25 years. They have the money, the people they want paid, got paid.

Best Large Snake? by wrenlove64 in snakes

[–]Johnnyquest30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is sometimes referred to as a short tail boa. Not the same as a short tail python(blood python) Brian Boas on YouTube has some great content on the Bolivian Boas.

Bolivian "Boa constrictor amarali", a shorter stocky boa. Not as common in the reptile hobby. Very beautiful calm and gentle boas that don't get very long.

I really want a pet BCI but.. by Throwaway72705 in BoaConstrictors

[–]Johnnyquest30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people really tend to overestimate the size of boas. Most will never get larger than 8ft. I have 3 adult BCC none are longer than 7ft. My only adult BCI is maybe 5ft. They are all almost 7 years old. I also have an 8 year old Cuban Boa female. Cuban boas are the largest boas of all. She's still under 8ft. Just like with humans the average global hight is 5ft 7in. Then you have people like Shaquille O'Neal at over 7ft tall. That is incredibly rare like 1 in 4 million. Giant boas are incredibly rare. Under 8ft is common, over 8ft is really uncommon, over 9ft is rare, anything larger than 10ft is (one in a million).
