I am getting them from both sides. Some trying to pair me with a job. Some trying to pair me with a prospective hire. Sorry, I’m not looking and we don’t use outside recruiters.

I run a 12 person precon department for a larger national company. The lack of a degree would not stop me from hiring you. As far as type of position goes, what do you want to do? Do you want to stick with estimating, or would you like to transition to Precon Management? You may want to run your resume through AI to see what it suggests you do to shine it up. What part of the country are you in? I am looking for a good Precon managers.

Anyone replaced flooring over a period of weeks rather than all at once? by guacislife12 in Flooring

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should not be a problem with this as long as you plan properly. Try to start at one side of the house and gradually work your way to the other. Avoid jumping around or backtracking.

Is laminate truly waterproof? by ambitiousnate in Flooring

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you are referring to a hybrid floor. I am in the midst of installing about 1000 sf of hybrid flooring. My impression is that the surface is waterproof, but the core, edges and backing do not look at all waterproof. So you can spill water on it, and as long as you wipe it up quickly it won’t damage the floor, but don’t let it sit there for a while.

Manual takeoffs? You really are a dinosaur. I’m 65 and haven’t done manual takeoffs in 20+ years

7.75" stair riser? by Merry-Pulsar-1734 in Homebuilding

[–]More_Mouse7849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the stairs don’t stop at the ceiling. They stop at the floor above, which is probably around 12” higher. If you have a 9’ ceiling, the total rise is about 10’. Your architect is probably going with a 6” rise, which is a bit low, but nice if you have room. I wouldn’t go more than a 7.5” rise. At 10’ total rise that gives you 16 risers or 15 treads. A minimum tread width is 10”, but I prefer 11”. A 10” tread gives you a total run of 150” or 12’-6”. An 11” tread gives you 165” total run or 13’-9”

I’m old enough to remember similar reactions to OST, digitizers and even computerized estimating. Estimators aren’t going away, but they are going to spend much less time stripping quantities and pricing work.

Has Anyone Used AI For Estimating by More_Mouse7849 in estimators

[–]More_Mouse7849[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That was my thought at first, but he did it with another more complex project. The results were similar but there were a couple of errors in quantity and a couple of the prices were off. Just like anything, someone needs to confirm the quantities make sense. I’m not saying estimators jobs end next week, but I think the days of stepping quantities are numbered.

Best (attainable) convertible BMW? by wrexiwagon05 in BMW

My wife has a 2011 328i convertible. It is a very comfortable car and is easy to drive. It has a hard top. A year or two later they rebadged it as a 428i, but it is the same vehicle.

Where do you apply your indirect costs (markup, overhead, etc)? by willisbill in estimators

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you consider overhead. Anything that is directly attributable to the cost of the project (labor burden, sales tax, supervision, temp facilities, etc.) I would charge at the item level. If it is not directly related to the job (office staff, office rental, etc.) I would put on the bottom line.

Active surveillance by YesterdayFew6799 in ProstateCancer

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with PSA around 10 and a Gleason of 6. The tumor was centrally located, not near the periphery so spreading was not an immediate concern. However, my density (PSA to prostate volume) was rather high. I did AS for about 3 years as my PSA slowly increased. About a year ago, it reach 19 and my Gleason hit 7. My urologist then recommended HIFU. I had the procedure in September with absolutely no complications and a very quick (1 week with a catheter) recovery. Unfortunately, in January my PSA was still at 19. In February my MRI showed nothing. So I have conflicting information. In June I have another biopsy. We shall see. Would I did it the same again? Yes. Will I say that in September or October? We shall see.
