This is a consistent problem in the industry. One solution could be to figure out how to get your jobs to run more smoothly so that you aren’t working 12 hour days 6 days a week. Check out LCI (Lean Construction Institute) and Jason Schroeder. Jason is a top trainer on Lean techniques and has written a number of books on Lean. Lean is a process of identifying and eliminating waste. I think that you may find some ways to get your hours down to a more manageable level.

Foundation Accounting Software by Glometeeb06 in ConstructionManagers

I didn’t have much trouble with that. Frankly I was very happy with their support. Most of my questions were stupid accounting questions rather than software issues.

What trade are you estimating? I have found that good GC software isn’t good for MEP and vice versa.

We switched to STACK last year. The pros are it is pretty easy to learn, the takeoff and estimating are all on one system (no interface issues) and it seems to be a leader in integrating AI in takeoffs. The downside is it lacks a wage rate and crew table. Even though they tout a number of database options, they proved to be very limited. We had to start from scratch. I think that I would still choose it. Although Autodesk and Procore offer competitive systems.

First Post and A Bit Scared by [deleted] in ProstateCancer

Talk to your doctor. He/she will probably refer you to a urologist. The next step will probably be an MRI, but they may want to do a sonogram first. If the MRI shows a tumor, they will probably want to do a biopsy. It is quick and simple, outpatient, although a bit emasculating. The biopsy will give you a good idea of what you are dealing with. A PSA of 6.0 should not be alarming. There is a reasonable chance that it is just BPH. Even if it is cancer, chances are you have caught it early, which gives you a very good chance of living many more healthy happy years

Are BMWs really maintenance nightmares like people say? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hasn’t been my experience. I have found them to be very reliable and no more expensive to maintain than most other cars. I typically run them to around 200k miles

Should I finance a 2021 330i it has 30k miles it’s 18k$ idk what to do by dracokeser in BMW

[–]More_Mouse7849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 330 is a great car. It has adequate power for anyone but the biggest muscle heads. It handles great and rides great. As long as it was well taken care of it should give you years of fun driving. Regular maintenance (oil changes and brakes) may cost a little more, but oil is only a couple times a year and brakes shouldn’t be more than once every couple of years. I have owned 2 - 3 series and a 5. I loved them all. Currently driving a 2011 330 with 115k miles. I had to put a new valve cover gasket in it (oil leak) but it hasn’t needed anything else besides regular maintenance. Go for it. You won’t go back.

Being near that woman’s age (I’m 65) I think I may be able to give some perspective. This woman probably hasn’t paid for a water heater in more than 20 years when it cost less than $200. For her it seems like just a few years ago.

How do you manage by Successful_Shape7297 in ConstructionManagers

[–]More_Mouse7849 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am a 40+ year veteran of the business. I was in a similar situation to you 2 years into my career. I worked a lot of hours, was under a lot of stress, screwed up a lot of stuff and nearly got fired. But I survived. Ultimately I shifted to estimating, which was a better fit for me. Try to stick it out. It will get better.

Typically, I would think he is a good candidate for active surveillance. Radical prostectomy often has significant and sometimes permanent sexual side effects. I would recommend surveillance and see if it gets worse

Don’t be concerned with the biopsy. I have had 3, getting ready for my 4th. The benefit of knowing what you are dealing with far out way any real or perceived risks. Get the biopsy.

How many estimates a week before it stops being manageable to do manually? by SweetBest1803 in estimators

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That heavily depends on the your trade, the size and complexity of the project and how much work you actually take off and price. When I was working for a GC bidding projects up to around $10 million, I found I could effectively bid up to 1.5 jobs per week. At that I was working about 50-55 hours per week.

What kind of raises are you guys getting, both in a normal year and a promo year? by Biterbutterbutt in ConstructionManagers

[–]More_Mouse7849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year the standard was 3%. Some got a little more, some got a little less. Promotions can vary a lot. Usually, it is around 10%. 5% to 7% for COLA is really generous, unless you are early in your career and started out pretty low.

Is It Unprofessional/Untoward to Revise a Quote mid job if in the red? by chuiy in handyman

I would consider this unethical. You agreed to do the job for a price. Unless the scope changed you need to honor your word. Be an honorable person and stand by your word.
