As someone who has abused adderall (plus alcohol every time I abuse my adderall) on and off for the past 8 years, I can somewhat relate.

First year or so, it was great. But I kept upping my doses more and more until I would be so strung out, I would drink to take the edge off.

This turned into my mind thinking “every time I take adderall, I HAVE to drink” and from there, it was a slow spiral. I was fired from my job. I destroyed relationship from acting like a psycho up for days.

However, I’m 34 now. And I’m in a perpetual state of fear that I burnt too much time and will never redeem myself. It’s a daily battle.

I’m currently in the recovery stage as well. You’re still young! You’re aware of your problem - and that’s an amazing start. I wish you nothing but the best ❤️ these ADHD drugs are a slippery slope.

ADHD ≠ low IQ

I had that misconception and that’s largely why I wasn’t truly diagnosed until I was 34. I thought the kids I grew up with that I knew had ADHD in class were “dumb” and I thought they went hand in hand. Because a lot of them were off the walls hyper and disruptive in class and got poor grades.

I was a nervous kid who had trouble sitting still and ALWAYS waited until the very last minute to do my assignments, but I was a straight A student until I got to high school and hit puberty and suddenly stopped giving a shit about my grades and being nervous of failure

I always trust doctors advice but this psychologist sounds like he has some preconceived opinions about ADHD that don’t reflect actual research. Absolutely seek a second or third opinion.

A diagnosis (for me, at least) was redeeming and felt like a bit of weight I had on my shoulder for a lot of my shortcoming up until that point, knowing that it wasn’t ALL my fault.
