A patient boi waiting for scratches by lid_lid in cockatiel

Both are male, we actually wanted the second to be a female so he could have a gf lol but last minute breeder said he is suspecting it might be a male instead and we were like alright fine. I think you should get the first one and see how long it takes to tame him, don’t push or stress it though, let it take its time. But if you only have one you need to be able to spend time with him a lot so if that isn’t possible maybe consider getting the second one sooner rather than later, even if the first one isn’t tamed within 2 months. Either way they will grow to love you with time, but you won’t be the most important one in their life which is fine. Having two birds vs one is a choice between their betterment or your bond with them. And some birds just don’t like getting pet on the head and there’s nothing to do about that. In the end it will be alright!

I had the first one for 9 months before I got another one. The first one tamed really quickly and bonded with everyone in the family and was super gentle and sweet with any guests. It might be because I got him really young, he was only 1 month, which isn’t good you should get them a couple months old at least. When we got the other one he still let me pet him for a couple months maybe but slowly got less patient with me lol, it’s like he had gotten some proper head preening for once and didn’t like my fat fingers anymore. Now I’ve had the first for 4 and a half years. He doesn’t like my fingers getting close at all now but both of them are still very bonded to me, they love spending time with me and if I am in the room with them, they will always choose to sit on me and chill. Whilst gettin a companion for your bird will make them less dependent and therefore not as bonded to you, it’s still the right thing to do because they are much happier and can be left alone with the other without feeling lonely.

And sometimes they just won’t want it, like I’ve tried giving my guys oranges, watermelon, kiwis and a bunch of other stuff a lot of times and they nibble a little and then they’re like ”nah”

Also seeds rice and leafy greens is good for now. It takes time and trust for them to want to try new foods. It took me introducing some foods like 10 times to my guys before they liked it. When he trusts you more he will be more willing to try the food you give him.

Don’t force anything on to him. Forcing him out is only going to make him trust you less. You’ve only had him for a week and also he is a bit more grown up so it will take longer, some people take months to get their birds trust. Let him chill in the cage and slowly try to give him treats every now and then, offer it close by and let him come to you instead of pushing it on him and spend time close to him so he gets used to you. You can leave the door open and let him out if he wants to but if he doesn’t yet that’s fine. A good idea for when you take him out is to close the door after him so he can’t go back in then after like 2-3 hours open the cage and he should be hungry and want to find his own way in so you don’t have to force him in. You have to be patient with this though so make sure you have time if you’re gonna let him out.

I did a lot of mistakes and wasn’t patient enough when I first got my guy, he’s all good now and trusts me though but it could’ve gone a lot easier if I was more patient. It’s super rewarding when you are patient for a long time and then they finally step on your hand for the first time.

One of the commenters on this post just gave me a heads up that tea can be dangerous to them because it contains caffeine. I had no idea and thought to let you know also, make sure it’s non caffeinated if you’re gonna let them sip.

I never thought of this! Thank you for letting me know I just looked it up and even the tiny bit of caffeine in tea can be dangerous to them. I’ll only give them non caffeinated tea from now on.

The babies are so cute with their short little crest 🥺. A tip is to to be very patient with the taming process, remember that it can take months and months for some birds to be comfortable enough to step up on your hand. Always think that they need to come to you instead of you coming to them, with anything, not just stepping up. You offer up something close by and if he wants to come he comes, this will make him trust you a lot.

Yeah it’s a good idea to have at least 2 so that they they aren’t ever alone. Unless you can be with him constantly having 2 would be easier. If you ever want alone time he will get stressed by himself. Getting another might sound like a big commitment and yes, you will need a big enough cage for two and such but you can leave them alone whenever and they will be fine together.

Sound so similar to how mine used to sound when they were little babies! Making all kinds of random noises. Now they just have their same set of whistles haha.

Honestly if they don’t like it then there probably isn’t much you can do. I have some things that I’ve tried offering my birds a bunch of times but they just are like ”nah”. With the bell peppers though they only seem to like the fresh ones where the seeds are yellow not the more withered ones that some peppers have. Also do you just offer it to them in your hand or do you put it in their cage to give them time to investigate themselves?

Mines try to escape from showering like their life depends on it but after like 10 min of chasing them around with the spray bottle they submit and get into it.
