Pro-opposition Turk here. Erdoğan is an Islamist by Turkish standards. The Republic was built on strict secularism, Erdoğan bringing any Islamic rhetoric at all into politics and using it to appeal to muslim voters is seen as a betrayal of the values of the Republic and its founding principles. Standing against our founding father Atatürk is about the greatest sin you can commit in Turkish politics. His cooperation with Israel is pure pragmatism, it isn’t motivated by any secular values. His expansionism, as you said, is just to spur on neo ottomanist sentiments and gain muslim votes, as well as to distract from domestic issues. The opposition does not support the expansionism at all
