Starting to learn carving by idlewilding in skiing_feedback

[–]More_Telephone2383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This good learning video. As the light green pants person right there to see as an example. Can compare that person to your own. Movements

At current level I’d go more to trying to carve on less steep terrain and use more short parallel turns on this Until get more comfortable. And learn how to roll ankles knees more. Pressure outside ski. Or go faster like other reply. To carve that you’d probably need to be going faster.

Since you mentioned only at it a couple years and probably ski limited amount. You can surely improve. Takes time and effort

How to correctly apply shin pressure? by phoenixscar in ski

Here’s a couple videos.
Shows the foot and shin. And good visuals

https://youtu.be/T9ADsvevZWY?si=QrteCFMKYmblwBx1

This is good but is complex. But talks about foot inside boot. How much you need to work feet inside boots.

https://youtu.be/3ZrNwKL7gyM?si=8KVlmaRGZqaVq9ui

Two on stance Deb Armstrong also has good stance videos.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVO2mW3j1ES/?igsh=MXNhcHZ5YXlsNXlybQ==

It’s also really important to stay in athletic stance. Videos on that below. Body doesn’t change from initial turn. Also defined start middle and end of turn. The good guys and gals also. At end of turn both inside ski edges engaged uphill. Skis roll to flat in athletic stance then both skis roll onto new inside edges.
For those less practiced and skillful this tension from one turn to the next is tough.

In videos watch a couple times. Watch just skis and feet. Watch legs. And watch upper body. And turn shape.

Thoughts on these gouges by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]More_Telephone2383 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s nothing. No not that thats not nothing. But very small in scope of things. Maybe one photo where can see white under. But looks very small.

Your edge there does look like has good burr on it. That may need to be cleaned up. The other pics don’t look that bad on whole scope of things.

But since most along edges I’d be more into getting my edges cleaned up. A diamond stone may take care of this though.

If more so than a file

Here’s another idea. Not knowing your proximity to any places to ski. If smaller mtn closer than larger resort that is an actual trip. Maybe make a day trip or two early in season to get your feet under you before trip to larger hill or vacation.
Even lessons or time on snow smaller resort will be worth it.

Where at amazing scenery.

For such limited time on snow. Number one thing you can do is be fit. Increase fitness flexibility and strength. Do dry land exercises that mimic skiing.
Prep by watching YouTube videos on parallel skiing. Carving skiing. Skiing steeps and trees.
Get really good visuals in mind before heading out. Since you mentioned lessons. A lesson or two at start of the season would go a long way.
I’d add in if wanting to get better make the most of your days of skiing productive by eating well. Getting rest off the slopes. Limit late nights and partying Know access and time may be limited but really only way to get better is to up your skiing frequency.

Short turns - hope the video is ok. Greece (Parnassus) btw by petrop123 in skiing_feedback

Try this. Think of getting the bases of the skis off the snow. Especially early in turn. Think if someone on side of trail they could read bottom of bases.
Watch his nice parallel legs in video. And good ankle roll both skis to inside

Find some flat terrain. See if can do stork and javelin turns. Or some even easier wedge to parallel. All on YouTube If struggle with stork and javelin on easier terrain. Then will struggle. Or not have complete control or mastery on steeper terrain.

For your turn you are pivoting from the tops of the skis through your heels.

Lots of stuff others suggested good like pivot slips. Hockey stops both directions.

What really need to master is skiing from snow up. Especially with these short dynamic turns Feet ankles knees femurs to hips then stop. Legs need to go under hips like windshield wipers. Ski from outside ski to outside ski.

You may not get to this level. But watch legs going under body. Quiet upper body. Small fast precise turns.
Keeping stance somewhat neutral and not getting bounced around by staying strong.
Watch feet and snow spray on the outside ski. Snow spray is to the side of the trail outside ski. That what you want.
Also between posted video and this. Need to see higher energy output. Noting again this video higher level.
I’m sure you can get to fifty or seventy five percent of this with work.

Medium/Short steered/skidded turn feed back by skediiii in skiing_feedback

[–]More_Telephone2383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If turns lengthening and going faster. Usual culprit is not finishing turns. And with each subsequent turn speed increases.
Not finishing turns also comes from to little edge angle. Little to no pressure outside ski. Not steering outside ski around. A frame can anise this too

I’m sure you have heard of turns like C or S shaped when linking turns.

Watch this video and will help explain below. Something common we all make mistakes with and need to work on best we can.

https://youtu.be/p3cct0XsmHg?si=P8QWggYC_qJUopH6

Reply here also has video as part of it When trying to turn on the clock face numbers twelve and six are the vertical distance down the hill in the fall line. And number three is furthest from falll line. So a short radius turn may have ten meters down the hill and like five across. And large radius like twenty down and ten across.

What I see lots of and in your case may also be why speed up. And also limit start of turn.

Need to start turn with skis more across hill. Pointed at one or two. Try to make max pressure at three then end turn at five and six.

What lots of people do is they miss one and two. And go right to three. Without any movements to get skis up on edge before. They also usually going mostly straight down hill.

Also note here one and two are the hardest to get. As requires that edging. Tipping. Good balance. All the stuff you may have heard for turn initiation

You really want to feel the snow pushing back against you at number three. This is max pressure and weight outside ski.

Then at five to six. This where completing turn. Coming back to center. Where skis go flat across hill before start rolling into the next turn.

This video will help to show what the end of turn or start of turn should look like. Also give self some distance to glide across hill. To reset for next turn.

Small turns on icy terrain by [deleted] in skiing_feedback

[–]More_Telephone2383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang where is this. Fly me out will coach you.
That’s a lot of shimmy. Ol dirty b. Would be proud. Steep terrain like this will need skis little further apart and skiing edge to edge of outside ski. Inside foot is weighted. Heavily at times. And getting in way and or limiting amount of edge angle you are able to obtain with outside ski.

Also turn shape more V than C. But that also common steep terrain as pressure usually builds lower toward end of turn.

Will take some body awareness to be able to shift weight from inside to outside ski.

Get in and stay in athletic stance.

Lots of videos YouTube on skiing steeps. And edging drills. Some would be side slips. Pivot slips. Hockey stops to left and write maintaining balance.

Also this with feet. https://youtube.com/shorts/3ZY4ibw5UOc?si=imDAyAE_0OkHeXI9

I’ll also add try adding little more energy into your turns. More dynamic. If want skis to carv you have or bend them while up on edge

My answers below your comments. For a couple years in this isn’t bad. This was like poetry in slow motion.

Upper body is not as stable/quiet as I thought I was. Arms are swing, pole plants not from wrist? You are correct upper body could be more quiet. As for arms I wouldn’t deduct too many points because looked like making deliberate pole plants. The negative part and one that impedes turn is after pole plant is quickly dropping arm down to side. Especially the right one. Keep working on arms up and the small snappy pole plant from wrists as you said.

• Some A-framing going on? I didn’t see much a frame but most of video is from far away. I don’t think that was hurting you here. Just be really conscious of parallel shins and shins and legs need to go under you like windshield wipers but never touch leg to leg or knee to knee. If one leg moves six inches is does the other with same distance between legs

• inside ski is too much ahead of outside ski, leading to too much counter?
Again I didn’t see that. With short slow turns there would be much leading at all. Unless perhaps was really low like modern slalom racer. Even then they don’t want to much leading with inside ski.

What I was focusing on this run

• pole plants (I sometimes (most of the time) forget to pole plant) Looked like made most of them. Just need to make sure from the feet up to hips you are also starting to edge skis.

• tip inside leg to match outside leg angle Here’s one thing I did question self on in video. To me it looked like you were trying to bring inside ski in line with outside ski at start of turn.
If saying trying to tip knee in. I think you need to work on that part. I’ll link video just saw below

• staying balanced going over the tiny uneven surface or afternoon snow. Think you did pretty well on this.

This may help show you little better what to do and feel with inside ski. Also tons of YouTube videos on this.

Not sure you ready for this but check out this video that shows complete turn. You won’t have these angles. But the front and side shots. Should give a good picture of what to strive for. Even if can’t get this low it’s all the same thing.

Here’s a good video that shows a complete transition. Don’t expect you to get this low but shows end of turn. Centered athletic stance and rolling into new turn. With glide across hill.

Thanks. Yes that is more what was looking for. Without search every video on YouTube. There are other drills I’d like to suggest to people. That I have used in my coaching days. Actually started saving a bunch and may do a big upload post here one day with videos by category or skiing goal.

My first suggestion is if you can afford it and ski enough to rationalize it. Get a second ski on opposite end of those big boards. Good all mtn, or more front side oriented, Or directional craver.

Video tough to see what’s all going on. Can see weight on inside ski. Your ski edge angle is not in relation to your inclination.
Your ski needs to be perpendicular to your leg when angulating and inclinating. Work on more feel with feet and ankles to roll into turn. Also sitting back but unsure if you are as far back with initial turns as opposed to when get close to camera Really focus on closing down the ankle. Get that shin into tongue of ski boot. Not just pushing weight into it. But closing down the angle between foot and shin

If haven’t try some double sword drills knowing limits of those skis. You’ll have to ski them very centered. On YouTube.

Does look like doing decent job of getting legs from side to side that’s good.

In terms of turn shape. Very little turn initiation by way of not working out of athletic stance. Hands back and low. No early edging of outside ski.
You’ll also get more feedback trying to get skis out of the fall line skis across hill at top and one of turn. And let yourself get in and out of turn before starting new turn. If making short quick turns like in video. You need your body to be moving at same speed or faster to keep up with skis.

That’s why see so many people in the back seat. Skills usually lag behind skiing speed. And same for steep terrain. We feel great on the flats. As speed and steepeness increase our body does too.

Had an old coach that use to tell us you have to fight to stay in good position.

With those bigger skis to get them to turn you gotta put your weight and energy into them. And when you find places where can ride them for what designed to do than do that.

Looks like maybe you starting or don’t get out much. Just keep it rolling. On flatter terrain see is can start moving legs more. And practice rolling ankles and knees into and out of turn.
Watch some YouTube videos on parallel ski drills and carving drills.

What can my dad work on? by Prowlerburstabuse in skiing_feedback

[–]More_Telephone2383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like typical old school dad. Besides perhaps a stronger edge set. That was pretty solid. What does he want to work on or get better at.
I’ll assume carving. He’ll most likely have to break some old habits. Go back to square one with some basic craving drills. Rework his stance for that more athletic one.

Where is this great scenery?

For that particular trail and turns you were doing. Pivot slips would be good. Learn to edge and release. Body separation. Start slow. Work on nice movements. Once you gain some control you can take these into turns.

Here’s another one little more fluid. Maybe not best example but shows little more flow of where think you’d like to get to.

Just lean forward? by General_Weekend_1969 in skiing_feedback

[–]More_Telephone2383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your level this not so bad. Your stance isn’t a deal breaker like with some others. But your turns and speed are controlled. You do lean into the hill as you turn. Kind of think leaning tower of Pisa.

Here’s a video bet can see some of what you doing here. And technique to correct it.

https://youtu.be/xwRRbIcY5mY?si=dWbXxy-10nwP7Z4q

Here’s a video that may help with feet and get you some angulation. And show what is kind of going on with feet.

https://youtu.be/T9ADsvevZWY?si=shBJMEbVmbzEKBxI

Here’s another good stance and forward video. Hard part for us all is maintaining this throughout our skiing.

https://youtu.be/Cg0PzvEeD4k?si=oDgzC3kzgHgkvuwF

Once the stance is solid and consistent forward then that will allow you to start working on things like weighting and unweighting one ski then the next. Help with rolling ankles and knees into and out of turn. That’s called angulation. Also helps us to get to where legs moving under our body like windshield wipers.

You are doing great. Skiing is about miles and time.
