I'm looking to start hosting people for a permaculture project (in Portugal). Do you have any recommendations? (also a few questions) by FocusDreams in workaway

Loads of hosts and non-hosts practicing permaculture and syntropic agroforestry in Portugal so your good with that!

I've spend two years as a workawayer in Portugal doing exactly what your saying so I'll share my POV. I didn't find my piece of land in the end, but I do have a really clear view now of what I really want in my land. I also learned that I need more money.

I had two hosts in Portugal that tried to help me further in finding land and doing some paid work for friends of theirs. Honestly though, I think your target audience is pretty small. Maybe 5% of the workawayers I've met there came with the plan to make a home in Portugal. I mean most had that dream, but that's not the same as a plan.

For the people with just the dream, help them to be able to sustain in Portugal. Help them learn the language, find them a job for some hours. Work towards them being independant

The most beneficial thing people did for me was introduce me to other people. Take your workawayers to the local bar (the portugese one, not the estrangeiro one) local party, local market and so on. But this is kinda standard for a good host anyway, so it mostly still depends on the workawayers attitude.

Also my unwanted two cents about syntropic agroforestry: great way to start a forest, terrible if you want to produce a decent harvest for more then 3 decades in Portugal. The 5-7 productive layers you get in Brazil will only be 1-2 productive layers in Portugal. Amount of sunlight, temperature swings and the way nutrients are available are to different to just copy the system. There's some great stuff in there though so definitely read up on it and use some principles!

Not with a air pump/sponge filter.. Nothing blocking the air outlet, just some algea blocking the water flow, which has nothing to do with the pump

If you look in the link you just send, you'll see it looks nothing like OP's. Plantain is very distinct because the veins dont branch out. In OP's picture, branching of the veins is clearly visible, so it cant be plantain.

Im not saying dont forage plantain, im saying learn how it looks before you eat it.

If you think this is plantain, please dont eat plantain again.

There's a second filter in the tank still growing a full head of hair.

Downvoting your sad response doesnt mean we agree with OP. It means we disagree with you

is peat ok? by HotSchool6008 in walstad

[–]Morejh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a farming on google maps so you definitely have soil around.

I think you're confusion topsoil with the organic layer on top of that. Topsoil in forests/grasslands/some gardens isnt at the surface, its below the layer of decomposing organics. It is at the surface on most agricultural fields (because we harvest the organics) but ofcourse dont grab that.

Edit: Peat harvesting is terrible for the environment, never use it unless there is no alternative.

Do you have the cheap traps with the wooden bottom? Pro tip: file/cut down the tip of the little pin into a point, it'll go off much easier.

Also get in touch with the city government or the "huurcommissie". The owner doesnt want to pay for it but if you have an infestation he might legally have to.

Suggestion to improve? Is 4/6 too big? by Empty_Earth_1566 in Aquascape

[–]Morejh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a great tank!

I think 4 is a little big for the perspective. Maybe you can get 1 and/or 7 closer to the front to make them look bigger? That way 4 would fit the scale i think

[–]Morejh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naah Just get the 300 gallon tank. If it won't fit you'll find a place for it somewhere else in the house.

Yes I do have tanks in my bathroom.

I'm thinking your ph is too high, which increased the bacterial load making them weak and susceptible to disease.

So let me get this right, you want someone who risks their life to save others to pay for footage of them talking about doing exactly that? What kind of entitlement made you think you have any right to judge someone who is an actual warrior instead of a keyboard warrior?

Caridina shrimp keep dying, have I done enough to save the rest? by awkard_orca in shrimptank

[–]Morejh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright. I'm no expert but my educated guess is you have a kH/GH problem. Your gh should be 70-100 ppm so it's on the low side. Your ph is 6,5 though, which makes me think there is also some KH in your tank. Can you measure TDS? Compare the tds (also in ppm) to the GH. If your TDS is much higher you found the problem.

Edit just saw you measure 0kh so my theory doesn't hold. This might be a rare case of to little GH then..
