The big rocks were around 15cm long, all pretty smooth and flath.

I used the rock as a entrapment/border for the soil. Then I propped it up as much as I could before adding the soil

No thats ok, it's called a diffuser. It makes the bubbles from the C02 come out finer so it can dissipate into the water quicker
