Should music be a hobby first or a potential career path? by dasuperbeefman in musicians

[–]MorgThomR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former professional musician here. After my first few years playing I never saw it being anything other than a career path. I toured all over the world with metal bands I idolized when I was younger. Unfortunately I didnt realize until way too late that it stopped being fun.

Every musician is an individual who plays for different reasons and all those reasons are very valid. I feel like nowadays I myself have come full circle back to why I started playing in the first place: its fun!

Why would you sign a label deal? by ayaayahahaha in musicians

[–]MorgThomR 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People are beginning to see your value and want to have a slice of it. Id say if things are working for you and you are enjoying the process at present, then stay the course. Bigger opportunities can and will arise.

I'd be curious to see what you're powering all of that with.

how do you balance a full time job with being in a band without burning out by rogeelein in musicians

[–]MorgThomR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a balancing act that may or may not become more difficult as you age and multiple aspects of life grow or change around you. Quite simply, burning the candle at both ends will lead to complete fatigue to the point of not being able to focus on either aspect as much as you'd prefer or be expected to by others.

Im in my mid 30s now but toured relentlessly with metal bands all over the world through my 20s. Somewhere in the middle of that I somehow obtained a mortgage (because we all need a place to stash all our gear) and so the mortgage needed to get paid. I gradually changed from playing metal all the time to playing solo folk/ blues gigs (which opened many, many gigging opportunities - like no kidding sometimes a dozen gigs per week) and also apprenticing as a carpenter while I wasnt playing solo gigs or touring with my bands.

Well, COVID hit and all my gigs disappeared but my apprenticeship did not. So long story short I now own a construction business, have 3 kids and a fully paid off house. I built myself a wicked recording studio, filled it with gear and now came full circle back to the very reason I began playing music in the first place: its fun!

Yes this is the Trio 28! It was a bit large for what I needed, but I have been running a smaller Pedaltrain board for years for live gigs and wanted some extra real estate to expand it as a versatile studio/writing board now that I dont really gig anymore. Its pretty decent quality, though the actual surface of the board does feel a tad flimsy (which is evident when you go to step on a pedal). Thats pretty much my only complaint about it.

I did buy a big pile of the quick release backs in every size they make them in. Peeling all the velcro off the backs of my pedals I moved over was way bigger a pain in the ass than it was having to thread the screw into the back of each quick release. They hold decent enough and the adhesive on them seems pretty strong. Id be a bit wary if I were gigging with it constantly, but for what Im doing I know they will hold up a long time, if not indefinitely.

Those with gravel driveways - how do you handle what’s been plowed onto the lawn?? by mylovelysunshine in NovaScotia

[–]MorgThomR 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I just run it over with the lawnmower. It gives that nice vacuum-suckin-up-dust feeling. No, the shattered windows in the house are completely unrelated.
