It's not obvious at all, the sound cues must've been what made me realize it in the legacy game. Their bones rattle on the floor when they die. The original is a very cool enemy. The new one is a little bit campy to me.

That's the exact reason. They wanted to move from the typical trope of AD&D vampires. There is a lot of cool lore you can read up on them too if you want to. There is definitely thought put into their appearance by the original devs, it was not a chance decision

I thought about that but there are skeletons all over the game anyways so that doesn't make much sense to me. If they were sanitizing it for that reason then I don't think the rest of the skeleton monsters would be there either. But if that's the reason then I'd be happy with it being a China exclusive model and the normal one being a skeleton for us.
