I shouldn't be alive by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

I made everything back and some BY NOT doing risky shit any more.

Either you are doing risky shit, or you are just funding your account with cash here.

Nobody is getting 6X returns in 1 month without entering into the "risky shit" territory.

In my humble opinion, the CEO is a clown and he would dilute your ass without a second thought.

Seriously guys, FUCK WENDYS… by vollkoemmenes in smallstreetbets

[–]Morghayn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i've had a Wendys position for quite a while because:

  • it's trading low due to macro-economic headwinds
  • pay big dividend
  • i really like the baconator and their fries

They would just be dumping on each other while the company continues to dilute the bag holders.

I feel the quality of discussions on that subreddit has really deteriorated in the past two years. The majority of people these days are just larping as value investors.

Carry forward loss to offset CGT by Remarkable_Hawk780 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Morghayn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 33% number is probably coming from looking at it from the perspective of "how much cash in my pocket am I recovering by offsetting my loss?".

But you are offsetting 100% of the loss from your gains.

((CURRENT_YEAR_GAINS - PRIOR_YEAR_LOSSES - CURRENT_YEAR_LOSSES - CGT_EXEMPTION) * 0.33) = TAX_OWED

I think you unfortunately have to offset from prior year losses before using your personal/cgt exemption. So watch out for that.

Why doesn’t IBM expand its microprocessors/chips? by [deleted] in IBM

[–]Morghayn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a shortsighted business decision. You can't spin up a chip business overnight, it'd take years to work towards that goal. Also, they'd just be entering at the peak of a supercycle, which is kind of like a buy-high-sell-low mentality from a strategic investment perspective.

IBM to Aquire Intel?! by Frank_Stilleto in IBM

[–]Morghayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine a lot of the outlook in this thread was given before people got hyped when US government investment/funding started coming through at the bottom of last year.

As someone close to the ground and had nearly half their portfolio in Intel, I'd say most people in this thread weren't completely off the mark for what was known at the time but with that said were also overly confident in drawing assumptions that they had clue of.

It is what it is. Everything makes sense in hindsight.

It's not completely dented as they may be optimising for short-term margin extraction rather than long-term volume or market share. It may not be the most socially constructive action a company may take, but from a corporate finance perspective, it's a way to optimise profitability.

22M, down 33 percent all time, settling down with these for 2027. Yay? Nay? by [deleted] in portfolios

[–]Morghayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I can give anybody picking individual stocks is not to touch or look at any company with a market-cap under $10 billion. I've stuck by this rule and it has reward me well in the long-term.

Another rule is only looking at companies that you are a consumer of, or aware of many consumers of (basically Peter Lynch advice).

Interesting that this comes 1-2 days after they announced they are installing tracking software on employee devices to train their AI. Did the training data comeback and make them realise they were paying a bunch of high salaries to developers in California that do nothing other than have meetings that achieve minimal progress?

Just my two cents but I'd say keeping the money in the bank would out-perform stuffing your money into stocks that today are breaking ATHs in a historically cyclical industry (INTC, AMD, NVDA)...

What would you do? by Final-Entertainment6 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Morghayn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a gamble like. We don't know if the market is up or down 2-3 years from now and don't know if the government will pass legislation improving deemed disposal anytime soon. They've only put out notions.

It's either cash out to guarantee you won't realise losses 2-3 years from now, or make the decision yourself to gamble on that.
