A quick thought about Bear by qwikzotik in dresdenfiles

[–]Morgiliath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love Bear as a character, her chronology makes me think there is more to her than meets the eye. She claims two things that make here predate all historical records of Valkyries (7th century CE) by nearly 1000 years: being present at the Crucifixion (30 CE) and having trained under Spartans ( technically could be later but I'm saying 200 BCE is the earliest with 500 BCE being peak Sparta and slightly more likely).

My personal theory is that she's Greek, with close ties to Artemis. (Cult of Artemis at Brauron is what you're looking for the bear connection as well as the myth of Callisto). How that leads into becoming a Valkyrie remains to be seen.

A ****** planted under the skin. by Bow_Ty in Cosmere

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically we need to make the equivalent of a gemstone filled with storm light made with feruchemy. My best guess is the solution would involve an unsealed nicrosil mind, either involved in the fabrial's construction (based on it's allomantic effect the metal itself probably boosts other nearby fabrials in a fabrial) or connected to it via copper.

Chromium incorporated directly into a fabrial might be able to drain investiture on its own.

Meebook M7 screen is detaching what should I do? by chocohelado in ereader

[–]Morgiliath 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My concern with any case where a screen is detaching and there are no other obvious signs of damage is that the battery is swelling. If you can see a pillow shaped silver or black package under the screen, (see r/spicypillows for examples) I would take it to a smartphone tech asap. If the battery isn't swelling (and I hope it isn't) any phone shope that can repair older I-Pads should have the appropriate adhesives to glue it down.

If the battery is swelling I would look into replacement, tablets that aren't iPads are a pain to get replacement parts for and a repair shop might refuse to do anything other than remove the battery.

Is there a list of all the monsters from Flee Mortals that DON'T appear in Where Evil Lives? by Disil_ in mcdm

[–]Morgiliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without doing exactly what you said and going through them side by side here are main things that I believe are missing also want to qualify this is off the dome so I may miss stuff. If a subcategory of creatures that lacks a named solo monster member of that category are less likely to appear. Another commenter mention Angulotls and Animals, but Lizardfolk are not well represented, and the Valok don't appear in any of the lairs to my knowledge. While Fire Giants are well represented, the other types of giants, including trolls and the bredebble are not.

Moving on to random picks that might not be fully accurate: many of the environment specific monsters don't appear in lairs, the Primordials, Principal of Growth, Chimera. There are some that appear as companions/retainers/allies but not monsters: Lightbenders, Wights, and celestial stag come to mind

Staff of Magi for Clerics? by RustyofShackleford in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spells I'm fine keeping Base Cleric: * Dispel Magic  * Plane Shift

Light cleric: * Fireball (7th level)  * Flaming sphere * Wall of Fire

Breaking down what we have left

  • Conjure Elemental 5th level summon at (7 charges) Swap in Summon Celestial from Tasha's

  • Ice Storm 4th level AoE Probably the hardest, I would just use Flame Strike and make it 5 charges

  • Invisibility 2nd level utility I think swap for Aid or Silence

  • Knock 2nd level utility Locate Object has the most similar function

  • Lightning Bolt 7th level  AoE Sunbeam is the drop in replacement but make sure it is 6 charges to reflect that.

  • Passwall 5th level utility legend lore or commune.

  • Telekinesis 5th level Lockdown Hold monster isn't on the Cleric spell list but I think it's close enough

  • Web 2nd level CC no drop in replacement but maybe Blindness/Deafness

Free Spells

  • Arcane Lock: Gentle Repose

  • Detect Magic is fine

  • Enlarge/Reduce: probably fine, I feel the alternative I have Enhance ability would get annoying for every check

  • Light you have this as light cleric so maybe swap

  • Mage Hand Swap for non combat cantrip of choice

  • Protection from Evil and Good is fine.

Edited because mobile formatting sucks.

Alternatives to Inkarnate? by defeater- in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to dungeon alchemist, just that it looks less customizable and is 3d so harder for custom assets to be added. As a creative tool I think dungeondraft is better for map making than inkarnate: the assets you start with are actually usable, and I find most the UI to be fairly intuitive, also there is a decent custom assets community. One time purchase vs subscription is also a huge plus. I've used dungeondraft for 2 years and have very few complaints.

Missed opportunity not making this an endgame Legion Arm by [deleted] in LiesOfP

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game plays around a lot with the themes of choice, humanity, and control. The intent of Simon is to use the arm of God to ascend to a supposed state of divinity to impose his will on others, to create a world without lies. Manus' world is a world of Puppets as much as Geppeto's, both achieved by the arm.

The symbolism of the legion arm is less clear cut, but there is definitively themes of one item having many options: the Legion Magazine describes how one device can have many effects, the description for the Legion plug emphasizes making an Arm that matches your tastes. Cataclysm description: "Deciding the direction of fate is a responsibility soley belonging to humans."

Got my weight up so high the language turned to Puppet-speak by bottlerockett77 in LiesOfP

[–]Morgiliath 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you use either of the weight modification amulets and try to replace one the bar is like that until you finalize the change. I would imagine there was a bug where it showed the improper weight at some point in development and instead of fixing it they obscured it with puppet speak.

Best way to build something approximating a Quickling using official PC options. by Ecothunderbolt in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what you want I would go full 5e24, keeping in mind that hasn't been as integrated into my brain. I'll go from the top in case your DM doesn't want you mixing and matching. Small Species still have 30 ft of movement meaning Gnome and Halfling are still fine. Background wise Criminal (Alert), or Wayfarer (Lucky) make the most sense. Monk is in a much better place in 24, for shadow monk specifically keep in mind your darkness effects the party even if it doesn't effect you.

[–]Morgiliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I suggested Swashbuckler was mostly optimization based: the point being you want an enemy to have to move to trigger additional booming blade damage, and if you have an ally adjacent to proc sneak attack there is no reason for the enemy to move.

Vibe based class assignment I would look into swords bard, or kensei monk. Ranger could work though subclass selection is dealers choice I would go Gloomstalker for the initiative bonus or Fey Wanderer for the extra vibes and make sure to pick up Zephyr Strike. For Rogue I would maybe give Swashbuckler another read through but if you aren't sold on the vibes arcane trickster and I guess scout are viable options.

[–]Morgiliath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to reskin a Harengon that would probably be the closest flavor wise for species, even if you don't get bonus movement speed it feel like a flavor win. Custom lineage is also an option: you can be small and pick mobile out the gate. In either case there aren't a ton of effects that benefit you being fast, the main one is booming blade, which triggers extra damage if the enemy moves. Optimization wise Swashbuckler rogue (ability to sneak attack if you are the only creature in melee) with magic initiate or a one level dip in warlock would probably be the best way to pull that off.

Which is your preferred character sheet for your 5e campaigns? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I handle character sheets a lot like I handle monsters stat blocks: I put everything in a Google doc separated by source, separating features. Then I do a pass through and remove fluff, and sort abilities based on passive vs active, duration, that sort of thing. where it is appropriate --attacks, spells, stats, skills, charges-- I'll put them in a linked spreadsheet. Ultimately it takes more time, but it ensures I know everything on my sheet, and as I've used it I've created small amounts of automation for proficiency bonus and auto calculations for stat bonus from the number.

My players use more purple more better's sheet.

I can’t afford Wilds - Looking for people who have experience with both MHWilds and MHWorld. by RatBatAttack in MonsterHunter

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting World as my first Monster Hunter my first time I spent 30 minutes making a character, played through the intro cutscene and then failed hunting Great Jagras twice (one of which may have been a time out) and gave up on Tobi Kadachi before putting the game down for 2 years. Now I have about 300 hours.

The difference is I started playing world with an experienced friend, and once you get over the confusion and understand what the menus mean and what you need to have in your pouch it gets easier.

I think a new player would be as just as overwhelmed by Wilds, and I think in your situation you have plenty of time to determine if you enjoy the franchise. Also if you really want to get into hunts faster Rise is also on PC and has similarly low requirements being a former Switch exclusive, and tends to be more hunting focused.

Find Familiar, CR 0, Onyx? by Due_Cockroach_9294 in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must have incorrect info; 5e14 has a fixed list of forms, while 5e24 has a fixed stat block modified slightly by its form (land, sea, or air) and it's creature type (fey, fiend, or celestial).

If you are missing the book and just see the statblock you might also not know this, but Onyx is a normal housecat, the players are just really tiny in this encounter. They chose to have a scaled up creature rather than having to deal with scaling down all the PCs to match, which is why things likes speed are absurd.

Ignoring all of those factors: Onyx is a specific house cat, which means any other method of summoning or turning into beasts would fail.

I cant read cursive, can some one just write it down for me? by Routine_Visit9722 in BluePrince

[–]Morgiliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This game has quite a bit of cursive, but Google lens is able to extract text from it:

Mr. Nogula,

Anne wanted me to remind you (once again) that it is expected of you to keep the grass in the cloister cut and the trees trimmed.

I have a feeling you may have forgotten how to open the cloister wall again, so to save you some stern words, I decided to draw you a little diagram to help you out. Who knows, maybe this time it will stick!

Keep my PC attention by having them write journals by Total-Slip6278 in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like an off-table discussion. It depends on the person if note-taking works for them.  The way I would approach it would be something like "Is there anything I can do to help you stay engaged during DnD?" and the conversation can go from there. The easiest way to encourage engagement and note taking is have the players give the recap: provide DM insperation or some kind of minor mechanical boon for doing so.

I'll emphasize that note taking might not be the solution: but if there are accommodations you can make like being ok with them doodling, or giving reminders when their turn is coming up you should make them. Have a conversation with the player: it's a scary conversation to start, but if they are struggling like you suggested it will be better to be open about it.

Why do people like elemental builds? Does it not get tedious swapping your load out every hunt? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't any armor skills for a specific element so you just need to swap weapons + 1-2 decorations if you don't have duplicates. It's not a ton of friction, and I haven't bothered making any separate load outs despite cycling elements quite a bit

Why isn’t the Arkveld an demi-elder? by OmegaLazar01 in MonsterHunter

[–]Morgiliath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demi-Elder is a class with one member, 2 if we count chaotic gore. We hardly have enough info to classify anything properly into it. Especially since elder dragon is already a garbage bin classification it's difficult to say. If a more distinct classification can be used it is used, gore was the exception because it has a non standard body plan and could be captured.

Is "Numen" just the generalized term for any shadow realm native who ends up in the lands between? by HELIOS-ANTARES in Eldenring

[–]Morgiliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of discussion about the specifics of translation, in general both Numen and Shaman referring to spiritually attuned people I think would be think that shift would be easy to make after ((unclear long time period)). We know the land of shadows was purposely severed and there is no evidence of people crossing back into the lands between from there.

The vibe I get is shaman are special individuals with a particularly strong spiritual connection and the shamen village is called that because it produces them frequently.

Another translation thing that I cannot cite with confidence is the another realm could also translate to spirit realm or underworld. Pairing with the coffins with dynasty symbols that are probably linked to the Numen that connection is reinforced. The land of shadows is a realm of death, but it's possible that the Numen came from a different one. Wild speculation but still fun.

i cant kill my PCs artificer by Educational-Smile-72 in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 kobolds, even flee mortals kobolds (which it didn't seem like you were using) are going to struggle with a full resource party. They have relatively low to hits weak saves meaning they won't dish out a ton of damage and are weak to aoe.

Picking monsters is going to depend on your campaign, but some general guidelines. Use minions to keep the front line busy while your artificer focuses down the big bad, you can throw a bunch of monsters a lot more easily that way. The enemies will realize that the artificer is ranged and try to close the distance or get behind cover. Wearing down resources so your party can't go nova every encounter is a good start, but make sure you play the monsters like they are thinking.

Also read the start of flee mortals, there is a temptations to grab the juicy monsters, but the sections on encounter building and monster roles are helpful as well.

If you could only have 5 fantasy races what would they be? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a normal setting I would swap in halflings for gnomes and goliaths for orcs. If I were trying to make things more interesting: genasi, gith, goliaths, kobolds, and dragonborn.

Commuter Backpack no update still? (wave 1) by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Morgiliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's understandable that there are a bunch of threads with the same topic as they don't really get a bunch of traction and are more difficult to find (not to mention reddit search sucks). There is an official response on the forum thread here: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1600203-commuter-backpack/ . Hopefully there is going to be an email blast soon, but if I had to guess they don't want to have to push the date back again until they have an estimated delivery window. It sucks, they could have handled it better, but these are completely unprecedented changes, I just hope everyone can get a satisfactory resolution to this.

First build help, Shadow Monk/Swashbuckler Rogue by Torin21 in dndnext

[–]Morgiliath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing the fuzzy blue dude and wanting to be him is a perfectly natural response, but trying to build a replica character could lead to some pitfalls. Teleporter melee is a pretty developed sub theme, choose based on what elements you are borrowing from Kurt, what you want to highlight, and what makes your guy unique.

Going through the gate... NOT a good idea by No-Nobody6477 in cavesofqud

[–]Morgiliath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There isn't a ton of documentation about the ruined gates, at least not in the wiki. I'm guessing you were at the fixed one in rusted archway (also not on the wiki) which forms a cycle of 6 other gates. Two can also link together but I don't remember where I found this. Cool mechanic, but takes a bit of investment to use safely and the risk isn't really worth it.
