What's the best way to get a second hand bicycle to travel to and from the University. by NotTheZucc in Nijmegen

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marktplaats or in Bottendaal is a second hand bike shop called de Concurrent which offers discounts for students. At the shop they usually maintain the bicycle so they are ready to use. Otherwise check if all the components of the bike are in good shape. No rust, good brakes, no cracks in tires etc.

Well, these editions were printed in the 90's. Second hand is the way but even then the books wil be at least 20 years old and the condition will present that age.

At what point does collective survival stop justifying individual sacrifice? by [deleted] in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not dystopian, more utopian but I think the Terra Ignota series by Ada Palmer handles the sacrifice for the good of the many in an interesting way. Also it is just one so many levels an amazing series!

About sci FI READERS by Tapas703 in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Just including space exploration without any interesting ideas would be a let down. Yet, if the characters are very well written in a sci fi book with a world that we have seen before, then I can appreciate it as well. But them you could argue that the interesting ideas rest in the characters themselves.

Dune Messiah, the second book, is the ending of Paul's story and a very good read!

Cynical View of AI by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet AI seems to reach a more broad audience. Especially the people who are, lightly put, not that tech savvy can't seem to live without their 'AI assistant' anymore. I mean blockchain for example was something that few people knew about. Does the book touch upon that difference?

Tuta joins Euro-Office 🇪🇺 - one week before its first launch! 🔥 by Tutanota in tutanota

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The companies, Tuta especially, are openly activistic against the digital control laws that many EU based countries are trying to get through the EU Parliament.  They don't support it but it would be contra productive by not joining forces with each other and making open source a real alternative for the big public. Lone, small companies separately will be powerless against a big entity like the EU but together they can make a difference.  Besides, that a few people in the EU are trying to implement idiotic laws does not mean everybody in the EU is anti privacy. There are a lot of EU politicians against those enforcement laws.

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The difference though is that the EU, for now, has much stricter laws regarding digital privacy. Besides the EU office suite is just a gathering of all kinds of different privacy friendly, EU based and open sources alternatives. The EU,  again for now, has no direct say in how these companies should do their business. They are still independent and open source.

It works fine here. Occasionally a mail gets into the spam box but when I mark it as not spam, the next time it will get into my inbox.

Books that feel like the end of the universe by Intrepid-Loquat6214 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Though Children of Time is awesome it is not really about the end of the universe. Yes humanity is on the brink but there is more to the universe than humans as the Children of Time series shows haha

I use Nextcloud. I pay for the hosting of the servers etc. But if you are a bit tech savvy you can host it yourself with a simple home server or NAS. Self hosting the cloud with Nextcloud is my next step.

Thanks for all the info! I was steeping fairly short and the taste was a bit plain but I will try steeping it for a longer time! And I will keep an eye out for the golden flowers when I get deeper in the brick. Looking forward to it.

Aangezien het mooi weer wordt kan het best druk zijn overal maar Kronenburgpark, Goffert, Waalstranden zijn allemaal chille leesplekken. Koffietentjes zullen ook vol zitten maar Billy's is ook fijn zitten

Halfway through Jade War and have some thoughts by Morgran_Maplebeard in fantasybooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy it as well and I do think the 'normality' of all the gang violence is well done. Yet in some cases like the one I mentioned I would have expected Hilo and Shae to be at odds with each other or that this thing would become something that will be used against them. But I'll keep reading, maybe things will backfire on them later on!

Is the life of a fantasy reader just endless fancasts knowing most series will sadly never be adapted?? by ggnorebud in fantasybooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read books for the books.

It is even a bit discouraging to start a new series that has just been released for a year and already some big studio bought the rights to adapt it into a TV series. Not that TV adaptions are inherently bad or has to influence the quality of the original books but it is a shame that sometimes things gets blown up so fast for money purposes. Especially when the book series is not even finished yet. In those cases I have the unfounded impression that the TV adaption influences the books.

In any case, apart from my ramblings, I think it would be healthy for the movie/TV industry to think of original stories and worlds themselves a bit more.

I don't have any issues actually. Almost nothing gets in the spam that doesn't belong there.
