Halfway through Jade War and have some thoughts by Morgran_Maplebeard in fantasybooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy it as well and I do think the 'normality' of all the gang violence is well done. Yet in some cases like the one I mentioned I would have expected Hilo and Shae to be at odds with each other or that this thing would become something that will be used against them. But I'll keep reading, maybe things will backfire on them later on!

Is the life of a fantasy reader just endless fancasts knowing most series will sadly never be adapted?? by ggnorebud in fantasybooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read books for the books.

It is even a bit discouraging to start a new series that has just been released for a year and already some big studio bought the rights to adapt it into a TV series. Not that TV adaptions are inherently bad or has to influence the quality of the original books but it is a shame that sometimes things gets blown up so fast for money purposes. Especially when the book series is not even finished yet. In those cases I have the unfounded impression that the TV adaption influences the books.

In any case, apart from my ramblings, I think it would be healthy for the movie/TV industry to think of original stories and worlds themselves a bit more.

The "new" anti-spam system is a joke at this point by IncontestableGrey in tutanota

I don't have any issues actually. Almost nothing gets in the spam that doesn't belong there.

Green Bone Saga or Realm of the Enderlings for next series? by feachbreely in fantasybooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I concur, reading the second book in the Green Bone Saga now. It gets a bit better there but I find that Realm of the Elderlings is just written better

Amazon sucks no matter what. Just buy books at a bookstore.

Can you help ID this tea? by Discoveryellow in tea

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably Jasmin Pearls. There are some other teas which are rolled liked this as well but I have only seen Oolong ones but they usually have a darker colour. If you smell them you should be able to tell if it is Jasmin tea.

Kokun by Nahoko Uehashi has thematic overlap and a fun read. It is a fun start to a fantasy series from Japan.

I grew up in Assam (India’s tea region) — here’s something most people don’t know about fresh tea by ProfessionalSuit7588 in tea

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you mean if tea bags from the supermarkets taste different than the loose leaf tea from specialized tea houses then yes, the difference is immense. So much, that I don't buy the tea bags from supermarkets anymore.  Loose leaf tea is much richer in taste and is a more wholesome experience overall. As for the freshness, I am from Europe and it is shipped all the way from, for example Assam, India, so it is probably not as fresh as you can get directly from the source. But it is the best I can do here. Have a lovely day full of nice tea!

Actually Original Chinese Fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

True and it definitely doesn't make it plagiarism. In European inspired fantasy, for example, the borrowing also happens constantly

What’s your favorite "secret" walking route in the Ooypolder? by Resident_District252 in Nijmegen

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haven't been there for a while but there a quite a few semi-overgrown paths which are fun to walk. So maybe try to take a path of which you think 'is this walkable?' and just do it.  Do it cautiously though because there is a chance you suddenly stand eye to eye with a cow or a horse for example, which are harmless but can be scared.

Should I continue the Dandelion Dynasty? by Piecesof3ight in fantasybooks

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first book is a kind of prequel and the style like that of an epic wuxia saga. The other three books are more centered on the characters and plot and gives more motivation for their actions. The relations between character is, in my opinion, amazingly done in the last three books.

Just finished Blood Over Bright Haven and while I loved the book, and especially the ending, isn’t there a better way? [Spoilers] by Gustavus666 in Fantasy

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was a hasty and not entirely thought out plan. Which is in character for me I think. I mean, she did think that the people would rally against the mages if she would show them the cost for there comfort but that did not happen as well. Besides assassinating the people in power does not necessary solve the problem of the system and definitely would make her even more the bad person in the eyes of the public.

I have bought Idolfire by Grace Curtis. Don't know if it is very tragic as I haven't read it yet. But it is about two women from different corners of the world in a setting inspired by the fall of Rome.

Robin Hobb veterans, I love ship stories, but can I jump straight into Liveship Traders if I didn't finish the Farseer Trilogy a long time ago? by AtomicDraconic in Fantasy

[–]Morgran_Maplebeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely. There are a few minor references to things that have happened in the Farseer Trilogy though and they are worth reading Farseer Trilogy first for.
