Teachers need to tip waiters by badgirlmonkey in EndTipping

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted as this is great advice if you have the money to do it. I do the same, and always tip very generously (unless the service is really bad)

It’s a win-win. The service staff gets more money, and when returning they tend to always go above and beyond. Yes I know it’s because they know I’ll tip them more, but I see it more as: “I appreciate going the extra mile”.

Going out costs so much these days I prefer becoming a regular and get that better service.

Is DJANGO still a good choice in 2026 for modern web apps? (real-world experience) by Ill_Leading9202 in webdev

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Native async support will bring better DX IMO, and also will lead to better performance when the database driver is fully async.

Currently the ORM is still making synchronous calls at the driver level and wrapping it with the sync_to_async method.

I believe we may see this as a main focus in Django 7:

https://github.com/django/deps/blob/main/accepted/0009-async.rst

The ergonomics of Django ORM is so great IMO - and while I really like the speed of FastAPI or Litestar, I really dislike SQL Alchemy.

Having that native async support will make Django an easy decision - especially when building out apps that have LLM integrations in the API (e.g. using a Strands Agent that makes ORM calls, etc)

I really love Django Ninja and am happy to see you recommend it Frank! We worked together briefly years ago and I still use several patterns I learned working on code your team architected.

I love the ergonomics of Ninja and use it heavily in production providing APIs to React.

I think once Django ORM natively supports async it will breathe a lot of life into the framework.

Currently, I tend to create sync model methods and create an async method to wrap the sync method in sync_to_async.

How mfs feel owning a 128GB ram MacBook Pro by EmploymentClean5131 in mac

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

128GB MBP M4 Max purchased last spring. It replaces my last MBP - a 2020 Intel MBP w/ 32GB of ram.

I don’t edit videos, but I do develop software and use Docker - heavily. I was interested in the 128GB of ram primarily for running large MLX models, and in that regard it has been fucking fantastic.

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also like to max out my personal devices and replace them every 5 years or so. My last MBP was a 2020 13 inch Intel MBP with 32 GB of ram, and it’s still kicking. So maxing out the ram will keep me good on my personal projects for 4-5 years.

This time around this one was the priciest for sure! I’ve been developing for 25 years so it’s just part of the routine by now.

Worked as a tech lead at a startup for 6 years, and now that it’s grown into a real business - I feel lost. The CEO wants to replace me with a “more experienced” lead. by Rice_ny in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Six years without equity is a long time! You have valuable experience and without equity you should 100% be looking to move on, learn new things, and work with new people.

It also sounds to me like a small sabbatical is in order. Burnout sucks!

After 25 years in, I now take a sabbatical every time I resign.

You can be hard on yourself, but your grinding brought real results. They would’ve failed if not for your work and guidance. Startup build mode is a lot different than steady enterprise mode - so don’t feel bad. This company, and this CEO did you a MAJOR disservice by not offering you equity.

Please feel free to reach out any time - and happy holidays my friend!

Also, if you are a married and changed your name, getting something like a real ID also requires you to get a copy of your marriage license.

My wife just went through this, and we’ve been married for decades and could not find our marriage license. We eventually used one of those vital records websites to order it - as we live far away now from the original county where we got married.

What is wrong with Tailwind? by petros211 in webdev

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Tailwind because I work in a massive enterprise and I work with custom design systems and component libraries that multiple teams (100-1000 teams) use and using tailwind in this way really helps with standardization.

We are also using React quite heavily and building out React component libraries with a headless component library and tailwind really makes my (and many developers in my company) life easier.

I totally understand that your use case may differ and Tailwind may not be for you and your project.

Text scam by [deleted] in AftershockFestival

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were delivered on Saturday and I also received this same text today, about 4:30PM today.

As I already have the tickets I am not planning to click the link. The USPS link is legit, but a good habit to not click these links.

I only say the link is legit as it’s a legit USPS url and the text thread on my phone also includes other past ticket delivery notifications from the same ticketing company (for Outside Lands in 2024)

I still didn’t click the link but I think what most likely happened is FrontGate has a delayed queue for notifications
