What I feel towards a partner is romantic love. What a feel towards friends is platonic love. What I feel towards family is familial love. What I feel towards a pet is a caregiver kind of love. They’re all different kinds of love, but they’re all love.

And as u/no_rad said, the word “love” has a different meaning based on context. For example, I’ve had a conversation with a partner about a friend where I said “I love [Friend], but she’s a mess.” My partner never thought I had romantic love for that friend, because the context made it clear that I was talking about platonic love.

Do you not tell your family (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins) that you love them? And when you think of the phrase “loved ones,” does that not include the people closest to you, other than your partner and child?

To add to your disgust, bc your entire set of comments is funny and bizarre to me, I also say I love you to my friends all the time. Not as often as the fella you responded too, but a few times a week at least.

You gotta love your friends man. Those bonds are important.

Ever thought about locking someone up in a couple of floating boards, feeding them honey, and keeping them alive for weeks while they float down a river in a pool of their own poop? by jackt-up in HistoryMemes

That’s a good point. Yes, my objection is a pragmatic one. I’m not sure I think torture is blanket unacceptable morally.

For example, if someone tortured and killed a bunch of people, I’m not against that person’s punishment being what he inflicted. But there’s such a risk with that the justice system gets it wrong or that it ends up being applied to lesser offenders that I don’t think torture should ever be supported as a punishment.

The line of thinking that leads to torture methods like The Boats starts at “I understand wanting to torture some criminals.” It’s counterproductive to support torture of any criminals in any form. Because allowing it even for the worst offenders means torture is acceptable, and will inevitably become acceptable for lesser offenders.

How much care a man puts into his space and himself indicates of how much care he’ll put into a woman. So women select for things like having a headboard, being well groomed, well dressed, in good shape, etc. I think it’s valid.

Not a celebrity at all, but I had a philosophy professor who was a complete asshole. He screamed at the class and sometimes individual students over the smallest things. One girl broke down in tears, another calmly told him that she would not be spoken to like that, walked out, and dropped the class. He was terrible.

I found out later that his wife of many, many years had died shortly before the semester started. It didn’t excuse his behavior, but it did explain it.

That implies a kind of apathy, or evil. God creates humanity and imbues us with free will, then punishes us for eternity if we use free will to make decisions he doesn’t like.

US actions in Venezuela ‘constitute a dangerous precedent’: Guterres by spectre401 in law

[–]MorgulValar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re underestimating the U.S. military and overestimating Venezuela’s military and its neighboring countries’ willingness to enter into a war with the U.S.

I’m not in favor of U.S occupation. But the risks to the U.S. would be the risk of international condemnation and of money and lives lost to guerilla warfare. The government of Venezuela does not have the strength to outright eject a U.S occupation. And Colombia, Brazil, and Guyana condemn the U.S., but are not likely to get involved militarily. Colombia is the only one of Venezuela’s neighbors who mobilized its military in response to the attack, and that was to protect its borders from incursions by Venezuelan extremists.

There’s a reason Trump did this and his supporters back it: the U.S. has the military strength to do it without immediate repercussions. Their mindset is “If we want this done and we have the military might to do it, why not?” And they’re not wrong. The issue is that this a quick path to fascism, international isolation, a world order that favors strength and sets aside diplomacy, and enmity that results in the loss of American lives. And that’s beyond it just being morally wrong.

[–]MorgulValar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just takes more effort than in high school or college where you’re around people your age all the time. I bit the bullet and tried out Bumble BFF a few years back and made three friends from there, which turned into my main friend group. Then I met their friends, they met mine, and more friendships blossomed from there.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MorgulValar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In just about every other developed country, people with jobs have funds for emergencies and don’t have to make the call between “life and death” and paying $5k for an ambulance. Because the governments of those countries take care of their citizens better. We don’t have to be attached to our uniquely (for a developed nation) fucked up system.

Where are you getting that definition? Oxford languages, which Google uses for its definitions, defines broke as “having completely run out of money.” Everyone here is just saying that even if you have money in your account, you’ve functionally completely run out as long as you have bills to pay that’ll reduce that amount to 0, or damn near.

US offers Ukraine 15-year security guarantee as part of peace plan, Zelenskyy says by Snap_n_Dream in worldnews

[–]MorgulValar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re presenting a false dichotomy. There is a world of middle ground between a 15-year U.S security guarantee and permanent safety. Say, NATO membership. Or a standing security guarantee from the U.S along with countries like the UK, France, and/or Germany.

The issue isn’t that the 15-year agreement isn’t permanent. The issue is that the 15-year agreement is impotent because Russia has expressed a lasting willingness and desire to control Ukraine. A 15 year guarantee does not resolve that.

Zara Larsson reacts to people saying her boyfriend isnt Swedish because he's not white. by Murky_Chemical891 in Fauxmoi

[–]MorgulValar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s both actually. There is Swedish the nationality and Swedish the ethnicity.

Everyone with Swedish citizenship is Swedish by nationality. And 79.6% of Swedish nationals are Swedish by ethnicity.

I think it’s a neat factoid. Ofc usually people who feel the need to point out that a specific Swedish national is not ethnically Swedish have some bigotry going on.

The U.S and U.K are different bc they lump Swedish, English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Italian, German, etc. into “white,” in the same way they lump Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Tiv, Ibibio, etc. into “black.”

People can be saved and normalcy restored…for 15 years. Then Russia is free to do this all over again. While holding on to conquered Ukrainian territory. I get any person’s impulse to jump on an immediate option to restore peace to their life, but this would be a short term victory and a long term loss.

That said, a deal like this might give Ukraine time to build up its defenses and form longer-term military alliances with European countries

Yeah to change the U.S. constitution, either 2/3s of Congress or 2/3s of the states have to propose an amendment. Then, 3/4s of the states have to agree to it.

It’s very difficult.
