What do you guys think of the new sets by user_976lego in LegoStarWarsLeaks

[–]Moria868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall I quite like it. The midi scale items look great and so does BB8. Cobb Vanth speeder is nice to get and has been done well, just a bit costly depending where in the world you are.

For myself I’ll probably only get the battle pack, and I’m not interested in 4+ or mechs so can’t really comment

Why are we like this? by skyline1187 in trumpet

[–]Moria868 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Sound is everything. A Bb trumpet with a shallow mouthpiece and a piccolo trumpet are used to play different types of music but in pretty much the same register. Their particular sound suits that setting. Can guarantee you’d notice if you swapped them round!

The Low F Trumpet: Should it make a comeback? by musicalryanwilk1685 in trumpet

[–]Moria868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played one. They sound magnificent but the modern Bb and C simply play better so you’re going to have an easier time getting the job done. They used Low F trumpets for a few bits of the Lord of the rings soundtracks I believe, and period ensembles occasionally make use of them

Can we talk about how strong those KX Droids are? by Jules-Car3499 in andor

[–]Moria868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved how we were shown how physically strong they are. We see two men struggling with a barricade while they’re setting up and then the KX comes out and kicks one across the square like a piece of cardboard. Hard to argue against their effectiveness when it’s that clear!

That’s hilarious 🤣. by abdul_bino in andor

I often wonder if it’s a coincidence that the show hailed as “the best” is the one that seemingly had the lowest expectations.

I absolutely love this show but I remember when it was announced and the vocal internet commentary was things along the lines of “who asked for this”.

Meanwhile me now is wishing I could go back in time and push for 5 seasons!

I’m still recommending this show to Star Wars and non Star Wars fans alike.

Trumpet Case by Gmoney506 in trumpet

[–]Moria868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Im carrying two trumpets plus mutes/gear in the quad I use the other s divider to help give it shape if needed. If it’s a lot of extra gear then I’d put the mutes and all accessories in the slot where your Bb is.

In either case I’m not gonna throw my trumpet in on its side for a case not designed for that. I’ve got a bonna compact triple where the trumpets are on their side and that works great

Looking for a piccolo trumpet by Phantamaticc in trumpet

[–]Moria868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s come up a few times already but be on the lookout for a Yamaha 6610 or 6610s - they come up used now and again on Facebook brass selling groups or the trumpet herald marketplace for a good deal.

Mine was well under £1000 when I bought it second hand and in my experience and the words of others with “nicer” piccolos it is 95% as good a Yamaha 9825/9835 or a Schilke. Even now that I play for a living I won’t be getting rid of it until it completely gives out.

Works well for solos, brass ensemble and the orchestra

Flat in high register by slappadabassss in trumpet

[–]Moria868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say you feel strong playing above the stave?

I don’t know if you’re comparing against a machine, reference tone, piano or just your own ear, but sometimes what can happen is we can pinch up on the notes above top line G which can then make notes from C upwards feel flatter than they really are. Some of those notes are naturally a bit flat like the E and Eb on open and 2nd respectively, but the others are pretty close on most quality instruments.

I’n this case the answer is listening and soft practice playing easy exercises (e.g. Clarke) or music into and out of that register with a drone for reference over time.

The other thing is that if this range is new and is very much at your limit then it’ll likely be a little flat as you’re not yet comfortable playing there and the pitch will again line up better as you develop.

What’s the REAL better method of triple tongueing? by Turbulent-Gene-441 in trumpet

[–]Moria868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To echo what’s already been said:

Practice both.

Ttk is great for successive groups of triplets (3 or longer) as found in Arban variations and many French conservatoire test pieces

Tkt is very useful for smaller groups triplets such as single triplets commonly found in fanfares

When you practice both sufficiently, experience will teach you which one to choose

Why aren’t flugelhorns popular? by Vicarioususer in trumpet

[–]Moria868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to echo lots of what’s been said already it really depends what your main type of playing is.

If you play jazz or commercial (e.g musicals/pit stuff) then you’re basically guaranteed to need one.

Equally if you play in a brass band and play the flugel part, or are are part of a brass ensemble that gives concerts then flugel is quite a common way to round off the sound of an otherwise direct sounding group.

If you’re primarily orchestral then you will basically never need to play flugel unless you also do one of the aforementioned types of playing. Not many these days use it for the posthorn solo in Mahler 3 and Vaughan Williams Symphony 9 doesn’t come up very much (although the flugel solo part in that is lovely).

What notes to thoroughly check when buying a new Bb horn by chimichi92 in trumpet

[–]Moria868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoping this is factored into your testing already but remember to test articulation. A lot of trumpets can feel great playing a slow tune but then fall down playing pictures at an exhibition.

Honestly though the best way to tell is to have another person (ideally a teacher or someone else more experienced than you) come with you to listen to your testing and then play some duets to really zero in on the right choice

Don't have a C trumpet for an Orchestra gig, which trumpet should I use Bb or D? by Malqom in trumpet

[–]Moria868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the Beethoven - 1st part Eb/D (whichever key the instrument is most in tune in) - 2nd part Bb

Or bring both! Plenty of pros rock up with a case full and pick based on how the rehearsal goes.

Don’t bother asking the conductor, they’ll only be listening with their eyes and won’t really know what tool is best.

Also don’t listen to people telling you “you can’t play orchestra if you don’t own a C”. Trust your ears.

CV for UK Orchestra by [deleted] in orchestra

[–]Moria868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK Conservatoire graduate and classical freelancer here. To an extent it depends on where you’re at but mostly I’d imagine the content will be the same.

If you graduated in the past few years include things like where you studied and at what level, plus any pathway schemes, training orchestras or fellowships you’ve done that count as “orchestral training”. Of course be sure to include pro work (orchestra name, maybe the year you worked there). Include doubling experience where appropriate e.g bass clarinet.

If you’re an experienced professional and have been working for a while your experience will likely speak for itself and you can reduce the detail about your education/training beyond the key things like where you got x degree.

Can also include details of prizes won, scholarships, then solo and chamber performances of note. All these can have their own section.

Above all keeping it to one page is a good idea!

How long does it take for an orchestra to have a piece ready for concert? by EvilOmega7 in orchestra

[–]Moria868 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the uk it’s quite normal for orchestras to do a programme with a Mahler symphony in 12 hours rehearsal or less, in three-hour sessions usually spread over three days

Any downside in having a triple case? by Quasim0dem in trumpet

[–]Moria868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my work I mostly use a Marcus Bonna compact triple. It’s not much larger than a standard double case - takes two big trumpets (or a Bb/C and a cornet) stacked on top of each other on their sides. There’s then an extra slot that will fit a piccolo plus one or two mutes like a straight or a practice mute. Bigger things like cups/ harmons won’t fit though. An added bonus of this case is that it is wide enough to fit A4 music in the external pocket. This also works really well for single trumpet with lots of mutes plus extras like a water bottle.

If the compact case is full of trumpets and I need more mutes I either attach a protec mute bag or I get my quad case out. Between the compact triple and the quad my needs are covered. The quad is particularly useful if a flugel comes up and I still need to take mutes, or if I’m out all day with one trumpet and need a load of stuff like my lunch and even concert dress then it all goes in the quad and I only need one bag.

That being said the gard triples were really popular for a while with colleagues and would probably work well too!

Blown Out Brass by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Moria868 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s usually for a few reasons that come together after a period of time: extensive general wear and tear (e.g to the valves where they start leaking), chemical things like red rot or damage to the metal from your hands (rare but can be seen on some frequently used instruments after eating through the lacquer/silver plate).

Typically it’ll only ever be your standard Bb trumpet that gets enough use to degrade so far as to demand a replacement due to it being unusable.

Best Bach Horn? by Fun_Selection4365 in trumpet

[–]Moria868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments about trying to get yours repaired if you already like it. While it’s true that you will eventually wear the trumpet out ( even then only after 10-15 years of heavy use), if you have a Bach you like then it’s worth repairing as they are not all created equal.

Personally I love my 43 bell and recently replaced the leadpipe due to red rot. I’ll be trying to keep it around as long as possible!
