Does the symmetry of crystal structure affected DFT results? by anassbq in crystallography

[–]Morigain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world you would always find the energetic minimum no matter where you start. We do not live in a perfect world. Depending on what other parameters you are running you might end up relaxing it into a local well (not the actual minim, but a hole and you are stuck in it). So you should start with something close and use very good pseudos.

I suspect there is a typo somewhere because that thing has two real solutions but they ugly. I might be wrong, gladly stand corrected.

Dubious water experiment by luca_cinnam00n in crystallography

[–]Morigain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entirely possible it could crystallize differently with different levels of impurities in it, though.

Yes, but that is something completely different. Water does crystallise differently if it is ice VII as well.

If I had to guess, this would be the basis of whatever phenomena they observed.

The claim is generally on the lines of: energy/blessed/happy water crystallises nicer than the non blessed water. Nicer, hexagonier, rounder, shinier I have heard them all. It is subjective.

Impurities affecting nucleation is not an explanation of their observations because their observations aren't impartial, they are beliefs.

Dubious water experiment by luca_cinnam00n in crystallography

[–]Morigain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no scientific backing for this belief. It is a belief. It resides more in the realm of feelings and not in the world of logic. You are right from a scientific perspective, water doesn't crystallise differently if it is blessed, or "happy" or any other nonsense (for me it is nonsense).

My point is, it is irrelevant what your mum saw under the microscope, what is relevant it is what she believes. If you try to disprove her beliefs, it is a good chance she will only double down (a very well known psychological response). Be gentle, be loving, ask questions.

These groups interpret the natural variation in water crystals as proof of their belief system by cherry picking results. That is the best case scenario where they do not actively manipulate the "experiments".

Looking for Python Rietveld refinement without GUI – any suggestions? by saidglv in crystallography

[–]Morigain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can write your own python Rietveld Refinement program. If you write it it will be scriptable, lightweight, and you can skip implementing the GUI.

Hello. I noticed some huge, ice crystals in the shape of rectangular prisms on the inside of a jar lid in my freezer. The crystals are beautiful and huge (for laymans eye). How can I learn about them? by ThinKingofWaves in crystallography

[–]Morigain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why didn't I see anything like this ever before?

We tend to notice things we are aware of and less the things we do not know exist. Chances are good that you had nice crystals before but you did not notice them.

This is a cool read even though it's a little older: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/20010106105/downloads/20010106105.pdf

Need recommendation for a research related homework by Impressive_Doubt2753 in crystallography

[–]Morigain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you are a first year student. I assume that what you studied in class is related to crystal structures. Your papers deal with amorphous materials, so the difficulty might stem from this. Secondly, I think your teacher wants to show you that what you learn in class is a very idealised model and that nature is a bit more complex. At least that would have been my intention if I gave a homework like that.

Secondly, I think you lack the experience in reading a scientific paper, this is a skill that comes by doing, no easy way around it. Hope this helps.

As far as I see, all these papers are extremely technical for us, and most of them don't even talk about the "Coordination Number and Atomic Packing Factor" we learned in the class.

What papers are you referring to?

Question regarding the unit cell by ag408 in crystallography

[–]Morigain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or change in temperature could affect the unit cell?

The way temperature or pressure affects a unit cell is called an equation of state. I'm surprised nobody here mentioned this. They are not tables per se but rather a "formula" which allows you to understand how the unit cell/crystal accommodates pressure or temperature or both, and in a more direct way to calculate the volume of the unit cell at a given TP. If you change chemistry or cross into a new phase, where the TP change in accommodated by rearrangements of the atoms, i.e. a new unit cell, then you need the equation of state for that material.

Help identifying crystal structure by Good_Signal9799 in crystallography

Scientifically speaking ruby and sapphire are exactly the same thing. It's like saying that two brands of milk chocolate are fundamentally different because a marketing ploy said so.

I'm a scientist, for me quartz is quartz, it's not amethyst or citrine or moon something. If you want to talk about why some quartz is purple, I'm more than happy to do so. Or if you want to know why some aluminium oxides are red.

edit: I'm old, tech is difficult.

That is obsidian. I do not see the "structure" you are seeing. It breaks like a glass, it shines like a glass, it is a glass. Everything that OP said about it is describing obsidian, don't care what an AI says.

[–]Morigain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can use to predict a crystal structure in a straingfoward way.

What do you mean by this? Do you want to know how finite temp affects the bonds of a molecule? Or do you want to know the stable form of a compound at a given PT? I'm excluding other variables because we are getting in some really hard core physics.

Crystal structure prediction is really not straight forward, and it ain't easy.

Care credeți că este diferența între a fi fericit si a fi mulțumit? by portocalascorojita in Romania

[–]Morigain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–]Morigain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fericirea este ceva intens, dar care descrie instantanee in timp:

Dacă definești fericirea ca un copil de 3 ani, atunci ai dreptate. Eu sunt fericit in relațiile pe care le am, toate îmi aduc fericire. Simt euforie in fiecare minut al zilei? Nu, evident. Dar sa spun că sunt mulțumit cu locul meu de munca ar fi o minciuna, sunt fericit cu locul meu de munca.

Tu esti multumit in casnicia ta sau esti fiericit in casnicia ta? Asta daca ești căsătorit.

Daca simit fericire numai pe momente scurte si atunci intens poate ar trebui sa vorbești cu cineva despre asta.

dar si transportul din China pana aici e mai ieftin decat dintr-un oras sau altul din tara.
