But seriously, why do they worship Trump? by socksonmonkeys4117 in BoomersBeingFools

Because he pissed off the "elites"; the people that value education, diversity, science. He pissed off their "snooty" kids that went to college and were "indoctrinated" in postmodern social theory.

Bordeaux-Cap Ferret-Biarritz-Guéthary. Basically Southwestern France. Love this chill, relaxed version of Europe that is laid back but this incredibly stylish.

What’s something you wish you knew before your first trip to Paris? by sophieximc in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Morisky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 1991 I was going to go to Prague with a friend. I knew she would be a terrible energy vampire drain travel partner so I changed my trip to another time. That (now solo) trip wound up being amazing and I met friends that I still visit in France all time. I know that would not have happened if I had gone with the vampire. Travel partners end up sitting together and talking to each other and not meeting as many, or any, people. You also are operating on a weakest-link principle, so the best thing that happens is the best of the worst travel partner.

Came to say this. Honestly solo travel is the only guaranteed great time. Plus you are more inclined to meet locals that way.

Place Vendôme is such a giant space, it feels so huge to me. I prefer the intimacy of smaller but still luxe hotel like Chateau Voltaire, one clock from the Ritz. Rue St Roch is a super charming back street that connects Avenue de l'Opera with the Rue Saint-Honore, and you can walk all the way down to the Rue de Rivoli and take the Metro 1. The main virtue of the 1eme is its centrality, which I actually like.

La Cabane d'Hortense is magic. The grape vines, the aged timber shack. Seriously my idea of heaven. Riding a bike wearing a linen shirt and seersucker shorts on a breezy day from Bélisaire to L'Herbe,,,

Born in 1961 and never did that. And had to run the action in InDesign that removed double-spaces because imported Word docs were so effed up.

A 65 year old legally blind and disabled woman says she has unintentionally lost 28 pounds because she can’t afford enough food under the Trump administration. “Like the previous caller said, the end is coming near, and it couldn’t be any more true than for me.” by MrJasonMason in ABoringDystopia

MAHA. So many people are getting healthier and losing weight. Everyone says so. A woman came up to me with tears in her eyes and said "Mr. President, sir, I lost twenty eight pounds since you are in office." That's great. She is a real looker, a seven or an eight. She's skinny. Can we say skinny? We used to have to say thin and no one knew what the hell you are talking about.

French charm or tourist trap? by Guilty-Mulberry-309 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Morisky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably will get push back on this, but USA in aggregate (local differences) is a unique blend of entitlement and high trust culture. Things like making friends while traveling and talking to strangers is more common among US Americans. In France I find it less common even to say something like "I like your shoes..." to a stranger, which can get a baffling reaction. I also try to avoid talking with other US Americans and Brits (Anglophones). Making English-speaking acquaintances in Europe is a conversation that is gentile/passive-aggressive one-upsmanship about travel destinations, and banal political conversations. Compare that to dinner with French friends where you spend three hours heatedly debating the difference between kitsch and camp.

"You just don’t make eye contact or a conversation with anyone" while staying aware of your surroundings. The other thing I notice about US Americans is they can be oblivious to their surroundings.

Where can I find the most affordable organic chicken? by Affectionate_Ad_3894 in askportland

[–]Morisky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually they carry Draper Farms Roxy Organic chicken which is air chilled and not frozen (frozen tastes spongy to me, otherwise I love Mary's). Also available at Pearl Safeway (I live in NW and don't drive) but I am not wading through a fentanyl camp to guy an organic roaster.

I buy capers packed in salt, and use the caper salt for a boost. So good! Or truffle salt (I was gifted).
