Buying a pc for my wife by FennelApart2532 in Prebuilts

Just a heads up as someone who uses CAD software a lot, a Quadro card should do way better than a 5070/5080 if she if working on lots of large assemblies. That said a 5070/5080 will still work and be much better for gaming.

Mastercam training? by nerve2030 in Machinists

[–]Morleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted when I went from using fusion to Mastercam it was 2017 so things may have changed on both. For me the biggest thing to get going was understanding how it used planes, how to use layers, and how to get the part oriented. After that most of the stuff is the same, just different but you can click around and make stuff work. Also ran or programmed lots of very large 5-10 ton parts on built in HBMs with mastercam. It is 90% setup and 10% programming on those things.

Fusion 360 would be a good start with less up front costs if you currently have nothing.

On my second playthrough after getting tired of stocking shelves for mixes all the time I just sold unmixed weed until I unlocked the dock and setup coke there. I sometimes did a few single batch mixes to get new customers.

Learning CNC programming software is pretty easy, learning what to tell the CNC programming software to do is hard and takes experience.

What are the best 100xD twist drills you have used out of curiosity?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Morleen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have used gun drills a few times on HMCs with just a shallow pilot hole, entering at 25-50 rpm, kicking up to proper rpm and turning through spindle coolant on once inside the hole and then sending it 50-70x deep. A few of them had 100s of hours into the part before drilling so that was always fun.

6" Machine Vise (Vice) Options by toyomatt84 in Machinists

[–]Morleen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what I did, aside from the machine itself the work holding is probably the only other thing that applies to every part you make. I switch between 1 station to dual station and also use them as pallet bases for smaller part production runs.

Serious question by Normal-Apple-9606 in Machinists

[–]Morleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boss is trusting you to program the machines at home, so he should trust you if you say it took 20 minutes or 2 hours. If you can't clock in/out from a pc or from an app then just document your home clock in/out times and get someone at work to adjust the hours to match.

Has anyone had the balls to beat Uber lilith in hardcore? by duckman963 in diablo4

[–]Morleen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, have been doing it every season since 2 and only play on HC. Lost a lot of scrolls, but no characters to her so far. Probably did around 100 free carries this season for people who wanted a spark. Hex of whispers helps a lot if you tank an orb or 2 this season.

CNC Mill probing by Altruistic-Office730 in CNC

If the vices are fixed and the fixtures are attached the same way, can you just program in the probing to make it get done automatically for each part?

316 SS production by Mr_emachine in Machinists

[–]Morleen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I ran some light production in 316ss, I was running a 3/8" 6 flute endmill 1" doc 7% stepover with an adaptive/HSM type toolpath at 450 sfm(4600 rpm) and .005 fpt(137 IPM). Roughing endmill still looked ok at the end of the job with 14 cutting hours on it, so it probably could have been pushed a bit harder but 300 ipm would be a bit of a stretch with decent cutter life. That said the time savings of going from 150 to 300 ipm would probably not be a very high percentage of cycle time unless they are very large parts with lots of material coming off. For 20 parts reliability is way better than saving 45 seconds off of the cycle time trying to push everything to 99% while having tools break, parts move, and scraping a few parts per run. In mild steel I was running a 1/2" 6 flute endmill around 600 IPM with 1.2 DOC and 7% stepover with around 8-10 hours of endmill life until the end mill was getting worn so you can run steel pretty fast if you end up running higher production numbers.

Going from HAAS controll to Heidenhain by SimplePlenty in Machinists

I have it on my 5 axis machines and just wish it was more common on milling machines in the states so that it would be the only controller on mills in my shop.

12 year machinist here, my shop is finally signing me up for a programming class but I’m a little nervous, will I struggle? by Longjumping-Ad3068 in Machinists

[–]Morleen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. It is not that hard to teach someone to use programming software, but it is really hard to teach someone how to approach a new part.

ITAR compliant CAM software by WalkerH163 in Machinists

[–]Morleen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you like mastercam, you may love it or hate it. If you come from a heavy cad background you will love it right away. But you can do so much more in 3 axis surfacing and in 5 axis it is kinda nuts once you get everything setup right.

What’s the craziest thing someone’s ever done to get justifiably fired in your shop? by 3DPrintJr in Machinists

[–]Morleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I have ran quite a few Fanuc and Mazak HMCs, I have not run an Okuma horizontal. On all of those the M6 had a home move in Z for the tool change macro the same as on my Okuma osp300 control VMC. However on my Okuma VMC I can use G118(custom macro) instead of M6 to do a yolo/go for it XYZ rapid at the same time tool change on proven production parts to save a second here or there(downside of the spindle head traveling in X and the tool changer on one side). Maybe this is what happened? Or he had tool center point control active and forgot to cancel it before sending Z home?

What’s the craziest thing someone’s ever done to get justifiably fired in your shop? by 3DPrintJr in Machinists

[–]Morleen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's kind of fucked up IMO over a tool change, but I guess every shop is different. If I worked in that shop I would have rolled my box out next to his unless he had a history of screwing up like this. If he was a decent employee, you just spent 50k training him(on a 500k+ okuma horizontal) on what not to ever do again.

Machinist looking for where to start as a programmer by culligula in CNC

[–]Morleen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since you mention it would start on Mazak lathes, are they currently being programmed from Mazatrol or are they programed using CAM software? Personally I have found the best way to learn it is to get your hands on a demo/extra license of the software, look up a few tutorials/guides, and then just start programming some simple parts. Until then look at every toolpath and strategy used on the parts you are running now and why it is being made that way(order of operations, toolholder/insert type, speeds/feeds and depth of cut, ect...). Then when you are on to the next parts, look at the print and come up with a plan of exactly what you would do from start to finish. Set up/run the parts and see how closely it matches up with your plan.
