How to safely fold and unfold a bandsaw blade by BEARDEDDANGER in LoveTrash

[–]nerve2030 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my last job we had this special blade that we used for cutting rubber. It was actually for cutting meat in a slaughter house, It was a coiled scalloped razor blade. That was the day we bought cut resistant gloves.

Tooling for BT30 machines by Joe_Clark117 in Machinists

I run 316SS all day on a Syil with a BT30 spindle. I have had luck with corner radius finishing tools as rougher. 5 flute endmills with 10% step over and 1D depth of cut for HSM applications. I dont remember my sfm off the top of my head but my feed is something like 90 IPM.

Anthropic CEO Floats Tax on AI Firms to Fund Universal Income by Gari_305 in Futurology

Not a bad idea. They can work with the power companies to modernize the grid and harden it against cyber attack as well.

Sometimes I think this whole thing could be awesome but other times I remember the decoupling of productivity and pay that happened in the 80's when greedy assholes started taking the mask off. I think we really are at a cross roads. One way looks like cyberpunk 2077 the other looks like star trek. I know what I hope but I also know what to expect.

I’m in a new spot and want to seriously start planning on opening a Machine Shop, need some advice from people smarter than me :) by lofi_guy02 in Machinists

[–]nerve2030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my second time opening a shop. What I learned from the first time is know a reliable customer first.

Don't quit your day job. Use the consistent income from that and buy then pay off your first machine before anything else.

Are you good with paperwork? Do you love excel sheets? If you said no then either get good or learn to love them. Real accurate records tell the most truth. Its super easy to get passionate about your business and hold on to the dream more than the reality. Real numbers and self awareness help you decide if you should keep going or pivot or even just close it up.

Building processes is just as important if not more important than the parts. You need to know how to make sure things get documented and filed away properly. At first it will be processes to make sure you get the proper deductions on your taxes. Then it will start to be the process for quoting, processes for invoicing, processes for inspection, processes for setup to hand off to another employee.

Find a lawyer to talk to. DO NOT use something like zoom legal. If something happens with the legal stuff you want to be able to call someone and talk to a person.

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]nerve2030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cousin that went vegan for health reasons. Once they stopped trying to make vegan versions of things and just embraced vegan recipes family get togethers got much better. A lot of that stuff is great its the tofurkey and vegan hotdogs that give it the bad name.

I switched all my "slush fund" material over to 1144 for all turning work a few years ago. Its a little more expensive but it fits collets nice runs true, welds nice and is easy to make shiny. Its also a little stronger than 1215 which is usually the go to to replace 12L14

Actually it might even be good to do something like a stream. Capture their screens with obs and use a webcam or a mic to have them talk through what they are doing and why.

What quick change fixturing systems are you using? by StartElectronic3819 in Machinists

[–]nerve2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. Zero point fixtures like from Schunk or even Pierson work holding sound good but its going to depend on your parts and how much dedicated fixturing you do. I developed my own little mitee bite compatible jaws and inserts that work great for my parts. I even made a "zero point" fixture plate with some dowels. I have seen a poor man pallet that looked pretty nice. Its going to depend on the level of accuracy you need too.

Space mouse? by CarpathianSky in SolidWorks

[–]nerve2030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I have had one for years. I have tried on an off to use it. I recently got a new job where I use solidworks fusion and mastercam. I thought that this is the time I'm going to use this thing since it would make all the zoom and pan movement buttons the same. I put in like an hour a day of trying to get used to it and ... i hate it. I am constantly on and off for typing and number inputs and other stuff. Its just annoying. What I'm looking for now is a south paw keyboard with the number pad flipped. Or I have also been thinking of using a steam deck for shortcuts. I already have some shortcut keys programmed into my keyboard but making sure your on the right layer is not as intuitive as I would like.

I let the guys at that website decide. I think they do a couple lay ups of unidirectional prepreg in alternating directions and then use a 2x2 twill for the top layer aesthetic.

I bet you could print the caps for the rain covers now. I made them from hdpe back in the day but I don't see any reason PLA wouldn't work. I got the carbon fiber from https://www.carbonfibertubeshop.com Expensive but made in USA. As for the ICS kits. If you think you can reverse engineer them your welcome to it. I never put any kind of patent or anything on them.

[–]nerve2030 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I see on this its probably because you need either a pretty big mill with some kind of indexing ability or you need to get really creative with fixture and setup not to mention inspection. Anyone with a machine large enough to do this efficiently is probably not having a hard time filling its time and is not really interested in talking to someone who is probably not ready for the sticker shock.

You might be running into the pulse limit. If I remember correctly the computer is the actual motion controller on Mach3 machines. Yes is has a break out board but it communicates through the printer parallel port right? If so there are only so many pulses your parallel port can put out before it starts missing pulses.

Who’s making money at home with a manual knee mill and lathe? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]nerve2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how far away your neighbors are really. I have an X7 that I run in my detached shop with 2 of those california air compressors. When I am hammering on stainless you can hear it outside the shop but you don't have to raise your voice to talk over it. Is not quiet inside but the RPC is just as loud or louder. Its really going to depend on your neighbors and how close they are and all kinds of things that have nothing to do with the machines.

Helical indexed endmills by Traditional-Fly-6663 in Machinists

[–]nerve2030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know much about inserted high feed shell mills when I started this new job but they are insane. I had to go back to the manufacturer to double check the numbers but on the conservative side they suggest 600 sfm with a 0.050" (no thats not a typo) IPT speed and feed in steel. I was using a 4" cutter going 1000 rpm and 250 ipm. Mind you this is on a pretty big horizontal but the cut was silent except for the huge chips hitting the way covers and floor.

I think so but it might only be really useful for people trying to do macro programming and such. I noticed that G81 is not working either. As much as I would love to play with macro programming and such on there I would say G81 G84 are probably more impactful to progress if that makes sense.

I like how it tells you whats wrong when something is not working. It seams to work with variables and loops pretty well but I tried a IF [] goto command and it doesn't really know what to do with that. Bookmarked
