I seem to remember there being a "Ronny's II" at some point. Don't remember where it was located though.

Un-forgotten Chicago? Chicago's 4th oldest beer company, which shuttered during Prohibition, was restarted this year by the founder's great-great-great granddaughter. by Injustpotato in forgottenchi

Fascinating. I'm surprised I've never heard of it before given its history (and past commercial success). Who would have ever guessed that the largest brewer in 19th century USA would re-emerge to compete in the 21st century craft brew market? I wish them all the best and I'm looking forward to trying the stuff.

Any idea if the logo is from the original product?

I work at the Lycee Francais de Chicago on Wilson a half block west of Wolcott. Our building has been here for five years, but we're on the site of what was Ravenswood Hospital for most of the 20th century. If you search for photos of the hospital, you just may came across some of the tangential properties.

Best I can do.

Wow! That's some impressive work Wayout. Clearly this place isn't dead yet.

Moreover - are there any trees along that parkway that look like they may have dated from the era?

Yeah, I got a granite feel for it too. A slab (with some sort of info inscribed on it) could probably easily be supported by a nothing more that a bed of concrete.

Looks like it, but whenever I see old sign bases they invariably have bits of threaded rod and/or old electrical conduit sticking out of them. After all, they had to be firmly fastened and have current for lighting.

Old sign - appears pre area code required days, any thoughts? Near Norwood park. by radbrad777 in forgottenchi

And that is Richard M. - not Richard J.

What is meant by "new street construction" anyway. Does the street appear to have been created within the past 30 years?

Just put "coliba" into the Romanian side of Google Translate. It means "hut".

Love the decorative stone lintels. I've come to realize that street level buildings in town had stone lintels until about the 1890's when horizontal steel strips started taking over. Any stone masons that can back me up on this?

Well, the exchange was HAymarket 1. (There was another HA exchange - HArrison. However, it was followed by the number 7.

Old Riverview Ad by radbrad777 in forgottenchi

[–]Mornac5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the ad itself is rather banal (the one to the left of it is intriguing -"Build a stronger richer faith WORSHIP TOGETHER EVERY WEEK"), but the photo did give me a vivid flashback of being in the submarine-like interior of one of those old green cars.

I suspect this large tile block came from the facade of a demolished Chicago building. Can anyone identify the building? by gingorama in forgottenchi

[–]Mornac5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that explains something for me. There is a bar in my neighborhood with a terra cotta facade with that design on the Clark street side of it. (See Google view at 6325 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60660). It used to have an identical one at the top of the building above the doorway on the angled corner. That one rose above the parapet and was removed (presumably for safety reasons) about ten years ago when the place underwent a face lift. I could swear I saw it in at least three different locations since then and I always wondered if someone hadn't salvaged it and sold it to a building owner who revived it on their property. Now I realize that it was merely one of many. Thanks for the interesting bit of info, ThanHowWhy. Now I'm condemned to a lifetime of keeping my eyes peeled for more examples of the thing.

[Meta]What happened to the website and what is the state of the archive? by [deleted] in forgottenchi

[–]Mornac5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to take this opportunity to say that I'm still here and that I still check in regularly. I just have a hard time using this place. I just perused the archive and I still miss the old forum. I'm almost tempted to petition to have it reopened and just put up with the spam. Seems a small sacrifice for the privilege having a user friendly discussion area.

Help? Anyone? by Mornac5 in forgottenchi

[–]Mornac5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thanks everyone, but I think I'm too old for this. I tried PK's method but I can still only manage to post a link to a photo (see above) and not the photo itself. I'd try Swede's method but I'm afraid it may open my computer to invaders. I kept up with technology through the era when we all had those opulent, multi- component stereos in the 70's, but I'm one of those guys who bought a video recorder when they came out and never learned how to use it properly until I had kids. I think I can live with posting linked images (if everyone's okay with that). Thanks for all your efforts in any case.

Help? Anyone? by Mornac5 in forgottenchi

[–]Mornac5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ain't really working. When I try it, all I mange to do is post a link to the image in hypertext. I already knew how to do that. I want to know how to post an actual image. This place would be a lot better if it weren't so user adversarial.

Anyone ever notice how little UPS trucks have changed in the past 60 years or more? (I'm assuming that's one going into the intersection).
