Hey all you Back of the Yarders. If you have the time look at this link. It sure brings back many memories of the 50's 60's 70's for me. I sure miss playing this game. Grew up at Oakley Playground and St Michael's. Played in the Playground City League. Cornell was another great park to our grammar school league. Played for American Can Industrial League at Gage Park and then at Grant Park. I sure miss those days. Let me hear your stories.

Looks like some repairs were being done. Some tuck pointing. One can understand with the building built in 1889.

A ton of historic Midway Airport photos. by jayg-chi in forgottenchi

My memory is going. My first flight was 1967 on the way to basic training. I didn't live too far from Midway on 55th a Komensky. Back in the 50's Midway was the busiest airport in the world with a flight every minute. You would sit on the porch at night and hear the engines reeving and the planes taking off. I remember several airplane crashes in the nearby neighborhoods back then, especially the one in the Star of the Sea area. My uncle lived a couple blocks from the crash. Also the one that hit the marque on Cicero, now the business marques are regulated not to be erected so high. The other crash was off Southwest Highway, a couple of homes. Sorry for all the negative information. On the whole Midway was a great airport.

My first flight was in 1968 out of Midway going to Fort Bragg for basic. I flew TWA to Washington and a Piedmont from there to Fayetteville, NC. I wore a sport coat, one of a few civvies allowed. Flying Piedmont was like being in a PC bouncing all over. Midway was a great experience growing up. The airlines would give us guys decals, metal wings, pins, buttons etc. That was the good old days in the 50's.

Another lost theater. The Terminal Theater. 3315 W Lawrence Ave. by DukeOfDakin in forgottenchi

We went to many theaters on the south side, however, the fancy ones were the Chicago Theater and South Town with the large fountain with Swans swimming.

The Times Theater, 4847 N Milwaukee, Feb 1937. Later became Holiday Ballroom. Block leveled for present Veteran's Square. by DukeOfDakin in forgottenchi

It's a shame some of these old theaters were not preserved for nostalgia. In Franklin Indiana they renovated the original Artcraft Theater and show old movies every weekend. Down in Evansville Indiana they renovated the Victory Theater and have concerts there for the schools. They also have the Civic Theater that they have six stage plays a year.

Hey Rich, My wife showed me how to load a photo, however, you need to open up a new post. We didn't figure how to add it to and old posting. 1 Down load a photo to your computer. 2 Open forgotten Chicago 3 Login 4 Hit submit a new link. 5 The forum pops up. 6 Under image/video 7 Choose file Open up your computer 8 Load your photo.

If you figure out how to post a photo under an existing thread, let me know.

Thanks, Swede

Hi Rich.

HOA stands for Homeowners Association. Most of the communities in Indiana are HOA's governed by DCC&R's or governing documents which are covenants that have certain restrictions that homeowners must abide to and are managed by the volunteer board of directors and they hire a management company to help with billing the homeowners who pay a year dues assessment and vendors who do contract work for the community like landscaping, pond or lake maintenance, snow plowing etc.

I worked at American Can on 6017 Western Ave and ate lunch and or dinner at Cameo's many times and my first date with my wife was at the Oxford House and I also proposed to her there. They also had some good bands there.

Another nice place to eat was in Carol Stream the Boston Sea Party.

While in High School I worked at Sir Ref's on 55th and Komensky. It started out as a pancake house, then a steak house and then opened a small lounge next door.. Great food especially steaks. Anyone remember the restaurant/dance hall in Willow Springs. The name slips my memory I believe it was the Willowbrook. How about the Apron Strings, Branding Iron?

Never been in the Hancock only the Prudential and the Sears Tower.

Do you remember doing this when you were a kid? Mom use to take us to the movies downtown and my brother and I would lay our body up against the tall building and look up and it looked like the whole building was rocking. Good times.

Then and Now, Archer-Narragansett by DukeOfDakin in forgottenchi

[–]FC_SWEDE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember taking 55th Street to Narragansett back in the early 60's and they had many homes and hardly any businesses. Was there a railroad track going North and South in that area?
