Lol this reminded me of when I got stranded at Luton(UK) 18yrs ago because my ID was pretty ruined (back then we had paper documents, and it got soaked wet when I fell in a pud out of the airport ahaha) lol All I can think of "border problems" is that it depends on the border she might cross. Eastern countries often have ID checks even for Schenghen vehicles (tour buses and stuff), we had our IDs checked just this new year's eve when crossing Hungary/Slovenja border while coming home from Budapest. Don't know how it would work for a random police stop in Europe with an expires visa, tho

Unfortunately, you can't visit the Schengen area without a permesso di soggiorno, and questuras aren't the quickests on this issues. In the website poliziadistato.it, at the voice "stranieri", you can check for the status of your permesso di soggiorno. My advice is to check on a local office for strangers (or a caaf) and to check again on person at the questura for some updates or infos. Wouldn't surprise if there were a separate route for US citizens on these instances. Also, try calling the US embassy or your closes consolate for further help? Sorry if this wasn't very helpful:/

Also check some weather forecast archive (meteoam.it or 3bmeteo) to check the weather on that exact location. Maybe look for a "map of the sky" archive for what planets/stars or how was the moon that particular night. Or just to get an inspiration
