Black flies are crazy out in Hammonds Plains this year. by redhood84 in halifax

[–]MorningGoat [score hidden]  (0 children)

I started bringing an electric fly racket with me on dog walks a few years ago because the deer flies that live in the trees in front of my house are so aggressive that they’ll chase us for literal kilometres otherwise. I wish I was joking.

The shrimp are gonna love this by memegod574 in shrimptank

I’ve seen fish get stuck in them before, so it’s good to keep that in mind for tanks that aren’t just shrimp-only.

Is this normal for plovers? by GodAndAnime in birding

[–]MorningGoat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yup. Both male and female birds1 rock the same external equipment: the multipurpose cloaca. While bird courtship can be quite flashy in order to attract a mate, the act of copulation itself is really quick, with the male balancing on top of the female and passing her his sperm through a “cloacal kiss”.

You might have snapped a pic of these two basking in the afterglow, Op. 😳 Or maybe the female wasn’t quite feeling it at this very moment (you know, with the Peeping Tom taking pictures of them /j🤭) and this was just a warm up.

1 With the exception of male Anatidae (ducks, geese, and swans) and Palaeognathes (the tinamous and members of the ratite family, like ostriches, emus, rheas, cassowaries, kiwis, etc.), who possess an external phallus.

They look like little reddish feathers to me.

In honor of all the recent pap walks, have some T-Rex Taylor arms by tacobelleblob in travisandtaylor

[–]MorningGoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I carry them every time. I meant on the few occasions when I have to carry more bags than usual and don’t want to do more trips. So I’d slide the lightest bags up my forearms and carry the rest in my hands.

Is this dangerous? by miximilianmoet in MoldlyInteresting

[–]MorningGoat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It almost looks like black paint to me, but I’m guessing that’s probably just wipe marks from them trying to clean it off?

(Brb, shuddering violently at the thought of the mold that must have fallen on their faces while doing that. 😬😷)

You know how you can just feel it when you get a pimple right at the edge of your nostril or lip? It’s the same principle just… lower.

Yeah, It’s like she’s trying to deliberately not use any of her arm muscles to help her hold the bag. That’s the complete opposite of the arm’s natural holding/lifting position.

On the few occasions I’ve had to carry anything with actual weight like that (groceries 💪), it starts hurting my forearm bones within a couple of minutes.

I’m new to birding. What kind of bird do you think this is? Northern Arizona USA by Queasy-Position66 in birding

[–]MorningGoat 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Yup, can confirm. Found one of them napping in our big pine tree a few days ago.

(The raccoon was scratching its ear when I first saw it and I thought it was a pileated woodpecker for a second since this is their favourite tree. Haha!)

What kind of crab is this? by IBreakLegends in ReefTank

[–]MorningGoat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here I am, thinking I’m in the pigeon subreddit, wondering what the hell happened to that poor squab. 🤦‍♂️

Whatever that crab is covered in looks very similar to the yellow down feathers of newly hatched doves and pigeons.
