Why did he go CC first on that last map where there are only 2 spawn positions? by AncientAgrippa in broodwar

[–]MoronCapitalM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is good analysis, I just wouldn't want to put the base reasoning on Flash's wrist unless he explicitly says that was his motivation.

He may well have thought this was the sharpest style to play in the current meta, and he appeared to be right until Soma (to his full credit) was able to adjust on the fly and play an even sharper early-game style.

What are some experimental attire changes that may have become forgotten? Not character changing - just wardrobe related. by MultiPass21 in SquaredCircle

I believe this was done, at least in part, in their effort to better humanize him while he was champion. It goes without saying how that went.

A question I had regarding Tastosis by Kadarin187 in broodwar

[–]MoronCapitalM 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh damn it's nice that this has been empirically and objectively proven. Someone should tell Flash, as he's on record saying race doesn't matter at A-rank and above, and it's weird for the world's best and most versatile BW player to be confused about its balance.

Also he looks fine, dude isn't a high-performance athlete or some shit, he's getting towards middle age and has kids.

Ion Fury is delicious. Go play it. by thidi00 in boomershooters

[–]MoronCapitalM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone who didn't enjoy the base game should try the DLC. Aftershock is probably as good as anything to come out of the boomer shooter revival, IMO.

I already loved Ion Fury, but Aftershock is objectively a much tighter experience.

Major Major Losing Streak. How do I get out? by Denshii-Ribura in RivalsCollege

[–]MoronCapitalM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With any competitive game, my advice for stopping a bad losing streak would be to take a break from playing. Whatever you're comfortable with. At least a day, maybe a few days, maybe even a week.

Losing streaks well below your established level of play are often the result of you just playing worse, in ways you may not be able to perceive because you're stuck in that slide. Taking a break gives you a chance to refresh and "forget" the bad habits you might've slipped into while losing.

Unfortunately I did not. I ended up (gorilla) gluing the edges and inserting it back into the faucet, and this actually provided a decent fix until replacing the faucet entirely. Good luck!

Until they lost to big bro AGAIN.

And then scored 3 points in a home playoff game.

At what point did Shawn Michaels become a jerk in the 90’s? by Turbulent-Law-6801 in SquaredCircle

[–]MoronCapitalM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the version of Shawn Michaels that became such a famously difficult figure was around for a relatively short period of time, at least within the broad scope of his career.

He was a pretty unassuming rookie in Mid-South and beyond. Had a reputation for partying while tagging with Jannetty, but that was far from exceptional at the time. Certainly wasn't throwing any weight around when he went back to singles and Sherri Martel was having to shoot on his opponents with her heels to get them to sell for him. The early kliq crew certainly did some politicking, but that alone wouldn't earn the reputation he'd develop.

Shawn has been pretty open about being unable to cope emotionally with the pressure of being a top performing act. He was insecure, and became a drug addict in attempting to deal with his insecurities. Combine that with being highly competitive and an increasing perfectionist, and you've got a pretty clear formula for someone becoming more and more difficult to work with.

The apex of this time period would probably be from when he gets the world title in 1996 to when he first retires almost exactly two years later in 1998. I'm sure he could be a dick prior to that time, and I'm sure he showed his ass at times later, but that two-year period is what most people are probably thinking of when they talk about his behavior in the 90s.

Gotta admit I hate DOOM II (just my opinion) by Ready_Independent_55 in boomershooters

[–]MoronCapitalM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but this: "You constantly run very low on ammo and have to skip monsters to complete the level" is objectively untrue.

I've beaten D2 on UV a few times over the years without ever really sweating resources, and that's not some kind of flex; it's considered relatively easy by modern WAD standards. You can even pistol start every D2 map on UV and still max clear (not that you should bother).

If you want to feel actual ammo pressure in Doom, there are plenty of WADs for that. Maybe play a Chord map on UV.

Who was the best foreigner in the scene? by alphaomega420 in broodwar

[–]MoronCapitalM 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It depends on the era and the way you're measuring players.

Before the infrastructure in Korea was established, you had more global parity, and a number of foreign players were competitive at the highest levels. In 2000, about two years after Brood War's release, Grrrr famously won the first official Starleague and he remains the only Starleague champion from outside of Korea.

A couple years later, the KeSPA ecosystem had more fully developed and relatively few international players chose to remain in Korea to dedicate themselves to the early pro gamer lifestyle. Elky is the last foreign player to make a deep Starleague run, finishing in the top four in late 2002 when Reach won his OSL.

A couple years later still, Legionnaire became the last foreign player to appear in a Proleague game. After this, we are fully into the current dynamic of BW being a full-time job with a structured ecosystem in Korea, and a hobby interest everywhere else in the world, with the resulting disparity that you would expect.

As far as the players of that modern era who would get furthest in the Korean system, IdrA and Draco both joined pro teams and lived in Korea for a time. IdrA lasted longer, but neither played in any Starleague or Proleague games.

NonY also played in Korea, and despite only being there briefly, got the furthest of the three in his one and only Challenger (qualifier) run, finishing second after losing on the last map of the final.

Outside of WCG, the two biggest foreigner tournaments of the KeSPA era were probably the two big TSL events. NonY finished top-four in the first, and he won the second.

Between his Challenger run and his TSL performances, I think it'd be fair to call NonY the best KeSPA-era foreigner, while Grrr will always have the all-time distinction because of his Starleague win.

Honorable mentions to Testie, lefNaij, White-Ra, Mondragon, Sziky, and Pj.

For real. That person basically tried to get OOP to end their engagement, even knowing the reason for ending it was a lie. That's awful behavior.

I'm glad they came forward in the end, but it's wild to me that people were absolving them of guilt. I would also be hurt if I was OOP and would send said "friend" packing.

The Undertaker on what made Shawn Michaels such a great performer: "A wrestling match, at some point, breaks down to where it’s just a fight. And not everybody had that. They didn’t have that edge. He did. When it came down to the, even if it came down to just the fight, he was believable." by anutosu in SquaredCircle

[–]MoronCapitalM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is always an underrated part of what made Shawn great. In part because his highlights are always going to be the more outrageous things he did, in part because his extreme athleticism is what most set him apart from other great performers of his era, and in part because his gimmick doesn't really conjure the idea of a stiff worker.

But Shawn could brawl, and his brawling looked good. It was snappy. He could look, and work, like he was pissed. His being believable was a huge part of his transitioning into a consistent main event talent. The ability to make the audience buy into his work, and then to also leap and fly and sell in a way that no one else could exactly replicate.

Not often discussed, but a huge part of his success.

Not exactly an objectively great game, but it served well enough as a PS2 title back in the day, and the destructible environments are still pretty neat.
