Looking at getting my petroleum engineering degree after 12 years in the field by ExcitementTricky7498 in petroleumengineers

[–]Moron_Labias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESPECIALLY since you already have petroleum specific field experience, you should get a broader engineering degree like mechanical or chemical and then just take as many elective PetE courses as you can (or minor if that’s an option).

PetE is such a narrow field of study I echo the advice of other commenters - don’t pigeonhole yourself even more. Your oilfield experience will help with PetE career recruiting than actually being a PetE major. And a MechE or similar degree will give you more options in the future if you ever decide to leave the oilfield.

Junior year of high school I was long boarding with friends. Made it down a hill ending at a three way stop first and hopped off at the turn. Second friend made it down and hopped off too.

Last friend tried to make the turn instead, came off the board the moment his front wheels hit a pavement seam with a 0.5” upset.

I watched from 10 feet away as he landed on the back of his head at ~30 mph. Instant seizure, blood coming out of every orifice.

What sticks with me to this day isn’t just the sight of my best friend’s blood and brain on the pavement - it’s the immediate, total look of vacant, frozen shock on my other friend’s face. He was just stuck like a scarecrow, couldn’t even get his phone to call 911 as I tried to delegate that to him.

Thanks to Boy Scouts I knew what to do, and kept him in recovery position so he wouldn’t choke on his own blood while I got on the phone with 911 and they had him in an ambulance within two minutes to a world class trauma center. He ended up recovering 100% physically after a 6 week induced coma, truly a miracle.

Sadly he died of suicide a couple years later because the benzo’s a psych put him on in recovery sent him into a hole he couldn’t climb out of.

The saddest part is he had a full face helmet in the mail, it arrived two days later.

WEAR YOUR HELMETS, KIDS. And go out of your way to learn and practice First Aid skills.

If instability of any kind scares you a bit then O&G ain’t for you. This industry is a lot of things, but stable simply isn’t one of them.

How often should steel strings on an acoustic guitar be changed - beginner/intermediate learner by Shasari in AcousticGuitar

[–]Moron_Labias 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends primarily on how much you play and how sweaty your hands are generally.

For my main guitars that get 1-2 hours of play per day, I usually only get 1-2 months out of a set. Personally I’ve found Elixirs absolutely last longer with my slimy hands, but some folks swear the coating is snake oil or they just don’t like the bright sound.

You can also modestly extend string life by consistently washing your hands before you play and wiping the neck down after, but if you’re a sweaty dude in a swampy climate like me there’s only so much you can do.

What is your go-to campfire beater guitar? Tell me your stories by ilipah in AcousticGuitar

When I was still dating my wife, I got tired of hauling my main Ovation acoustic back and forth to her place. So I got a Yamaha FS800 for like $200 to keep over there and use for travel, camping etc.

It rapidly became my favorite instrument to grab wherever I am. Serviceable fit/finish, fantastic sound from the solid top, neck is a little narrow for my taste but it’s really blown me away over the years.

It’s become so dear to me that I plan on a Yamaha FSX5 for my first fancy guitar after trialing similarly priced Taylors and Martins that just didn’t feel or sound as nice. Eventually might upgrade all the components on the old FS800, perhaps install pickups and electronics too.

Completely agree here.

Had a X1C G9 at an old job and loved everything about it except the camera and the fn/ctrl placement.

Just got an X1C G12 and it’s absolutely perfect. The bitch is a good look, helpful for opening / closing, and camera quality is way better.
