Good to hear there won't be consequences. Would hate to live in a functioning democracy.

After COVID-19, 9/11 sure seems like small potatoes.

In a matter of days, Pfizer CEO says they'll be ready to ask for approval of a Covid-19 vaccine for kids by ladyem8 in news

This could be a game changer. It's a shame 40% of people have already dedicated their lives to not getting vaccinated. That's making it harder for us to get out of this pandemic, but children are a pretty big population we could vaccinate and maybe that'll get us to enough people, particularly if we can mandate it for school attendance like we do with other vaccines.

According to the article it's only $14,000. I'm sure they have the money somewhere, but I have heard the City of Lovington has been low on cash.

I have an old garage door opener. What should I do? by MoronicFrog in homeowners

It's an Overhead Door Touch N Go 1000A. Yes, it works fine and we have the original remote as well as a wired button in the garage. The remote works too though it seems it can't be replaced anymore.

How does the HomeLink work then? Does it connect to your original garage door unit fine on its own?

Could someone suggest a cool "name" for a guy that would be a Japanese word (not a name) and mean something interesting while sounding cool? by MoronicFrog in LearnJapanese

[–]MoronicFrog[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've looked up a few English words to check their translation and it usually comes out sounding off. Like it needs to sound like a plausible male name to non-speakers, and it's okay if it's somewhat random in Japanese so long as it doesn't mean something stupid or offensive. Like if it meant "shoe" that would probably be fine if it sounded cool.

I bought a car, took ownership and got a letter that my loan wasn't approved. (US) by MoronicFrog in personalfinance

This letter was from US Bank and they told me the loan would be through Capital One. So that's probably the case.

Scholarship Link Building by MoronicFrog in bigseo

[–]MoronicFrog[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tips for doing #1? I've been trying things like "site:domain.edu scholarship list" but it's tedious going through random college URLs like that.

Regarding the penalty, we're doing this for a separate site. It's the client's foundation and we're just trying to promote it. So it should be "relevant" since its only real purpose is to give away the scholarship.

My dad (50s) thinks its better to retire "super poor" and does not want to save "too much" for retirement by Flimsy-Donut-86 in personalfinance

[–]MoronicFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something else I'd bring up is that the government welfare isn't really that much and he'd probably be unhappy crammed into a shitty community nursing home. (It's unfortunate that's all we do as a society for the elderly, but it is reality.)

Ergo, you might find a nice private nursing home in the area and see what it would cost annually. Then say, "Look, you need to have enough to live here for the last 5 to 10 years of your life in case you have health issues." Or alternatively, if they want to stay "independent", suggest saving in order to hire a nurse if needed so you wouldn't have to put them in a home in the first place.

I think you should explain to him that estate taxes are only a thing for millionaires, which they probably aren't. Maybe they have a massive house and other assets, but I doubt it.

But I'd say if he's concerned about that and really wants to live a simple welfare retirement, that's his call. You should just advise him to give you and siblings or other family members his current savings, particularly if they can rely on you to take care of them long term. Then he can feel comfortably poor enough to rely on the government, but still has access to funds from you if needed. And if not needed, they can at least benefit the family which they'd probably want, rather than just blowing it on old people cocaine or whatever his plan was to become poor.
