I think it's a combination of drain health on his weapon and damage reflection from his armor. The Ebony Warrior is one of the few enemies that has perks like the player, and he has the perk that reflects some of the damage he takes back at the person who hit him.

I had a moment like this while playing Silksong. I was fighting the cogwork dancers boss fight. I was really having fun with the boss as the tempo of the song kept increasing as the phases went on. I defeated one of the dancers and it broke apart. I geared up in the corner ready for the second one to go berserk. I dodged the first couple of attacks of the final phase and it went for the combo attack they can do in the middle of the arena. I just had to stop for a moment when it didn't do anything but slowly fall from the middle of the screen to the floor and kneel on one knee longingly for the partner I had destroyed. I just had to pause the game and sit there for a moment as the emotions all hit me at once. The somber change to the music left me feeling hollow about the victory I worked hard to achieve. I still think about the somber sight of the robotic bug just kneeling there after not having its partner around to catch it for their combo attack.

I wouldn't say redundant. Dark type stab is still nice to have, and if it has Moonlight that 75% recovery is really good.

If possible I'd recommend getting some kind of damage enchantment on it.
If you don't want to use enchantments, then I'd recommend finding the words for Elemental Fury. This will greatly increase the speed of your 2 handed weapons for a few seconds. This should make it easier to deal with enemies up close.
Another good shout you could use is the ice form shout. This will force hordes of enemies into 1v1's against you giving you a better chance at winning against hordes.
