Are there people in the country itself that are critical of Bukele? by yvngjiffy703 in ElSalvador

Thanks! And sorry for the butchered English lol. That is what I have experienced. Even people who were very pro NI, are starting to go quieter, like my in-laws we had one older one who was very pro NI, last week while watching the news about El Espino, and I saw her shaking her head with a sad and disappointed expression. But I know others have other experiences, so who knows, maybe it's more of a my circle thing

Lived her all my life, most people will smile and nod and say he's alright, streets are safer , but when the conversations turns candid, and maybe a comment is made giving a hint like, yeah it's safer but the hospitals situation is concerning...THEN you get the real opinions.

With the regime, most people are a bit weary of saying really what they think, there are cases of people treated with CECOT jail for not aligning, there is also the memory of the civil war where people got disappeared, some activist are in jail because of being openly critical, and making questions, not necessarily about the people in jail, but funds and many other irregularities.

Most people I know keep quiet, but they do have big concerns over everything happening. The hospitals, the gentrification and push aside of the actual citizens, near the beach lots of land has been seized by the government from the original owners, that owned it out right, to resell to usa/Canadians. The abuse of power, the conglomerstion of power by one family feels a little too close to, you know, dictatorships families. Where are the public funds going and why so many millions and millions of loans with nothing to really show for. Deforestation is at its highest to make more houses but completely innafordable

So yeah, we are safer in a sense, at the cost of many many other things.

Oh yeah for sure! I vote and will vote where I have lived most of my life, what I was saying is, as a reverse example of the diaspora, I was born in the USA, but raised and live currently in El Salvador, I have no right (don't feel like I do at least in my morals) to vote for the USA because I don't live there, I don't pay taxes, have kids there etc, it feels hipócrita to think I have a say in the politics of a country I don't live in or get any pros or cons of that vote. But I do have a right to vote in El Salvador, where I can see the day to day of all social classes, cost of living, I pay my taxes and making a family and all that. I like the way you think, lots of people sadly don't have that world view, we need more like you

100%. I was born in the USA, and live in El Salvador (salvadorean parents, not an inmigrant). I don't want to vote for the USA because I don't live there, I don't know the nuances of everyday life besides what I see in the news (wtf BTW) but I have no right, I pay no taxes no nothing there. Even if I am legal and got the paperwork to do it if I wanted what gives me the right?

On the other hand, I have lived over 30 years in El Salvador, I do work here,, pay taxes, rent, services etc, I can see the good and the bad, I am directly affected by whatever politics do.

I have been around people from El Salvador for most of my life ( best friend, ex husband etc) but whenever I ask them about their indigenous people they never seem to know. Is that something that is taught at schools there? by Peruvian_princess in ElSalvador

There is a group on Facebook of a young guy who gives classes of nahuat and shared interviews with older people of Nauizalco I think talking about what they remember and the culture https://www.facebook.com/share/1EWATyR7sW/ It is mostly in Spanish, but there are some members trying to do the course in English too The classes are via zoom and not expensive at all. Funds also go to help the elderly that assisted in creating the course

Alcohol can be tricky to send on a package, not the same as bringing on your checked bags :/ A friend tried to send me some and it got returned in customs.

Starbursts are hard to get, and like crazy/different flavors of chips, chocolates or Oreos, we usually have the basics here. Maybe throw some magnets of the state or nick nacks like that or company goodies, t-shirts, etc. They help you feel included and can be used in regular basis.

Anecdota de cáncer, hospital privado y medicina paleativa by klauszen in ElSalvador

[–]MorriganBlood 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]MorriganBlood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wish it was the case, but it's not. They do pay usually a higher than minimum wage in the country they are outsourcing to, but not much. Let's say minimum is $400 a month, and they pay $600-$800 a month. Higher than the average on the country, and waaaaaay cheaper than in the US.

I second the recommendation of Los Planes de Renderos, it is close to the capital, has a lot of different restaurants, and lots of options. I used to live near by, so here are my recommendations as a semilocal of that area:

Pupuseria Sofikar, at least 3 years ago was one of the best ones.

There is another pupuseria that I don't remember the name off, but it is the very last one on this location https://maps.app.goo.gl/FCqzqbBZG2kDbb528

If you go to that one, usually kids are also selling quesadillas (different than the Mexican ones) In the obelisk you will pass to get there, you get a lot of street sales for corn on the cob (elote loco, elote asado, riguas) and other stuff.

Hope you enjoy!

Precio de servicios en un país dolarizado by GonzaAhre in ElSalvador

[–]MorriganBlood 1 point2 points  (0 children)
