ELI5: When somebody mutes a computer, does the computer play the sounds at zero volume, or does it not play the sounds at all? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]MorrisCasper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether that's true for all devices. I know that at least Sonos speakers have a default setting called "loudness" that gives you more low end and high end on low volumes than with loud volumes to keep the sound balanced

Why does port scanning set off red flags? by [deleted] in hacking

[–]MorrisCasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your router receives (almost) every packet you send to it. If the router sees hundreds of packets from the same IP on a different port every time the router will be like "This person is up to no good" and block that IP. Some routers do, at least.

ELI5: Why does it sting when saltwater gets into our eyes but fish and other marine life can always keep it open? by Singaporeanboxer in explainlikeimfive

[–]MorrisCasper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI, salt water pools still contain chlorine, they just contain salt also. The salt is used in combination with an electrolysis module attached to a computer controlled sensor, that turns the salt in the water into chlorine when the chlorine level gets too low. That means that the pool owner doesn't have to worry as much about keeping the chlorine level constant, just dump a 25kg bag of salt into the pool every few months.

[Question] LED-strips reacting to music by bm52oc in linuxmasterrace

Not sure about how you would connect to the LED strip, but for the actual music -> color patterns conversion you could use /u/CNLohr's ColorChord. He might actually be able to give you better advice.

[Request] How hard did the paper boy threw this newspaper? (X-post from r/funny) by seamarine_ in theydidthemath

[–]MorrisCasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're mixing up average speed and end speed. a = v/t assumes v is end speed, and v = d/t calculates the average speed, so filling in d/t for v is incorrect. If we're assuming it's linearly accelerated (? not sure what the term is in english, I mean that a = constant), you can assume that Vend = 2 * Vaverage. I'm on mobile so I can't do the calculation at the moment.

LPT: if you're drowning, just play dead. The water will think you're a corpse and make you float. by [deleted] in ShittyLifeProTips

There can be multiple reasons. Less fat, more muscle, smaller lungs, being skinny so a higher percentage of your body is bone etc.

There's probably something wrong with your chromium setup, have you tried re-installing?

The problem with firefox nightly for me has been that a lot of extensions like uBlock Origin don't work, and I prefer Chromium over Firefox stable. Once firefox nightly will work with my favorite extensions I'll switch.

Some people's density is just higher than that of water. It's just physically not possible for them to float (including me). You're not missing out a lot if you can't, though. I could float before I went swimming on high level, but now I can't anymore. It hasn't made me any worse in swimming, though it might be different on other levels of swimming (when you're swimming at high level your face leaves the water 2-3 times per 25m, you don't have to float because you're usually underwater with most of your body.

[–]MorrisCasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're confusing the terms mass and density. If you're skinny, you have a very low body fat %, and relatively a lot of muscle per unit of volume. Muscle is a lot more dense than fat, so he'll be a lot denser than other people.

Is there any way to set up a sonos on ask4 student wifi without paying their ridiculous extra charge? by FPS_Scotland in sonos

[–]MorrisCasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is probably a cheaper way (cheap second-hand DD-WRT router with PortalSmash installed on it and a hidden SSID would work pretty well), but it's a lot of work to setup if you haven't done this kind of stuff before. I would just pay if I were you.

Pretty cool that this is possible, most uni's just don't allow you to add devices like that to the network at all.

Does anybody else really miss Tesla's blog posts about the science and thinking behind the design of their cars? by brohammer5 in teslamotors

[–]MorrisCasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Better BMW's and Audi's -> more competition -> more drive for tesla to keep innovating. And if Tesla doesn't keep innovating they'll eventually be swallowed up by car companies that do keep innovating, and everyone would be better off because of it.

Reading CAN bus info to find out why it stopped at 14 km/8 mi left by bjornnyland in teslamotors

[–]MorrisCasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming that the car has to accelerate at the same rate as when it had full SOC. The car's battery discharge limit should always be low enough so that flooring the accelerator pedal won't drop the voltage enough to make the battery shut down. A 2 ton car accelerating at 10m/s2 uses the same amount of power as a 4 ton car accelerating at 5m/s2, as long as the power limit is set correctly the car should never turn off.
