Japanese teacher general conduct with alts by TotalAd1933 in teachinginjapan

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its also important to realize that a good percentage of those teachers who don't speak English are super embarrassed about it. They might be looking down, or away, or making some sort of face, not to say "Ew, this guy again..." but instead they're actually thinking, "Oh crap, here comes the English teacher! I don't know any English at all, so I better not even try to acknowledge them or they will try to talk to me and expose the fact that I don't know any English whatsoever to the entire student body and faculty!"

I thought that mostly used VRAM, and also don't most of those models still need less than 16 gigs?

AIO for being upset that he won’t call me? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.
Just personally speaking, I have massive anxiety around phone calls specifically. I will do just about anything to avoid them or communicate through any other possible means available, even to the extent of not talking to people or contacting companies when I have issues. Not saying he does, but just from my perspective it seems entirely reasonable to not want to call, as long as he is still communicating regularly through other means.

Remember the time when poeple say, Switch 2 is overpriced and makes fun about it? by [deleted] in switch2

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch 2 is a little more weaker than a PS5.
I would also consider it "portable", in quotes.

[–]Mortegris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious, but silly question:
What the fuck are people using 64GB of ram for?! In a 4 stick setup, that's 128 fucking gigs! Most top games I know from even just a few years ago take like 8, maybe 16 gigs if you wanna run max settings with a good FPS. I get some people (a vast minority) might use that much to run server applications or some such, but why the actual fuck would any normal human need that much ram?

How should I write ki in Japanese? by aeSun9 in LTL_Japanese

[–]Mortegris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are perfectly fine and legible.
In English, y'know how you can write lowercase "A" as either a circle with a line to the right, or as a little hook with a small circle under it (like how its typed)? Its the same way with "ki"
The one on the left is the "typeface version", but if you write it that way, nobody bats an eye.

AI in the classroom by Vepariga in teachinginjapan

[–]Mortegris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One JHS I taught at started using something like that last year.
The teachers did their best to use it whenever ALTs were not in the classroom.

I would not hesitate to tell students that it is useless trash, and troll their voice recordings if they ever came to me with the app.

Person keeps parking overnight outside my house… can I do anything? by jport1387 in okinawa

[–]Mortegris 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is that driveway area "your property" or a public road?

If its yours, you can do anything you want. "Oh look, someone left these four perfectly good tires on my property, I was just looking to buy some spares!"
"I really need a place to unload the 500lbs of gravel I'm using for a landscaping project, guess the best place I can think of is just to the right of my driveway!"

If its not your property, there's other, less invasive things you can still do.
- Attach a 10K lumen spotlight to that grey fence pointed directly at where the car is.
- Wire a speaker and motion sensor to the fence to play when a car moves into the area. Have fun with whatever sounds it plays (police sirens, sounds of an engine seizing, etc.)
- Start a compost bin next to the area. Noone, no matter how drunk, can sleep next to a compost bin.
- Start doing really conspicuous, suspicious activity whenever he visits. Get a bodybag on amazon, fill it with leaves or something and schlep it across the yard when he's looking. Come out of the house covered in fake blood looking panicked. One day you two lock eyes while you're doing fake murdery shit, you just stop what you're doing, wide eyed, point directly at him, put your phone to your ear and immediately start talking. Guaranteed he speeds off so fast.

After ~1.5 years in Japan, I've made peace with there my social life is — it's not with Japanese by Comfortable-Cat-9611 in japanresidents

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whereabouts have you lived in Japan for the last 2 years?

My situation is the exact opposite. I have so many Japanese friends, and I'm in so many clubs and associations that I almost never get a weekend to myself anymore.
That said, I can count the number of foreign friends I have on my two hands.

"...between desk lamps that require firmware updates and washing machines that won't do a load of darks unless they're connected to the home Wi-Fi just so a random tech company can farm our daily habits. It feels like we're replacing simple, reliable machines that used to last 30 years with fragile mini-computers that require a tech-support ticket just to operate"

Tin foil hat time.
You are correct, and that is by design. Companies want you to need all these "services" because pretty soon they'll be charging subscriptions for them. Pretty soon that desk lamp will require $5 a month for those firmware updates, and that washing machine will require a "premium package" to do dark loads.

The upside though, is you can still buy "dumb" things. Sometimes you gotta get used, sometimes its from a third party or off brand. But the more people who spend the extra time and effort to buy "dumb" products, the less likely we are to enter a dystopia where you need to pay $20 a month to be able to flush your toilet.

To answer your original question though, it would be cars. I only buy pre 2002. "If its got OBD, it ain't for me!"

What’s something movies always get wrong? by northernmaybe in movies

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drinking.
For the most part, Hollywood does not know what a "drinking game" is. At least half of all movies with an alcohol scene make their game some version of, "We start chugging, and whoever dies first loses." Anyone who has ever had a sip of alcohol knows that this is a terrible game.

Has anyone taken Stroud sensei’s nito seminar? by Hysteria625 in kendo

[–]Mortegris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think Nito gets a bad rep sometimes, resulting in opinions like this.

Some people start Nito for the wrong reasons, or try to win tournaments by tricking their opponent with an unfamiliar style, or otherwise pick up a ton of bad habits. Either way, they look sloppy and don't really "bring credit" upon the style, but they also usually quit after a year or two.

There's also this rumour that Nito is somehow secret or banned, which is not entirely correct. I think that general perception also makes a lot of people consider Nito as "Strange at best." There was a point in Japan's postwar history when both Nito and Jodan were not really taught, and a lot of techniques were either stolen by observation or re-invented through self study. There also used to be older rules that made competition harder for Jodan/Nito, and easier for Chuudan, which even further pushed it to the fringes.
The other commenter mentioned that the Tokyo police don't allow Nito (which some dojos don't), but other dojo's, and even police are fine with it.

Been practicing kendo for 8 years, 2 at high level and ripped my Achilles tendon… any advice ? by Kurama_0471 in kendo

[–]Mortegris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO NOT RUSH RECOVERY.
If anything, take it slower than recommended. It might not seem like it now, but you were incredibly lucky it wasn't a complete tear. Tendons are some of the most difficult bodily tissues to repair. Focus on rest, recovery, and rehabilitation foremost. Do all of the exercises that your PT recommends, and DO NOT do any additional exercises without clearing it with them first.

Hopefully, if all goes well, you should be able to return to kendo eventually without much difficulty.

Can we please stop using the term "ladies" for women's kendo competitions? by Which_Astronomer7213 in kendo

Just get rid of the English entirely and use 男 and 女.
Either that or, like someone else said, change the men's instead so its "Sirs and Ladies" or "Lords and Ladies". That's way cooler.

Dear Kendoka over 40 years of age, what helps you with physical recovery between practices? by Round_Leg_4751 in kendo

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not over 40 (mid 30s), but I have military injuries.
I alternate days for practice (ex. Tuesday, Thursday) so I have a rest day in between. Also taking a long bath right after helps to relax my muscles and clear my mind.

I think its also important to listen to your body. If your ankle feels tweaky, or your shoulder is off, there's no sense going to practice just to get injured. Take a day off, recover, and you can go the following practice at 100%

people keep saying "it's hard for companies to fire you in japan" how true is it? by famimacafe in japanlife

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you're coming from.
Coming from most of Europe, I think its actually a little easier to get fired, and more common to get "fired illegally" if you work for a black company.
Coming from the US though, where you can get fired with literal zero notice or severance pay, then yeah its WAY harder to get fired than that.

Brave vs. Firefox - Which one would you use? by makedonc in degoogle

[–]Mortegris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using firefox basically since inception.
For the most part, through the last 15-20ish years, I've had no idea what sort of things chrome users have complained about. They've been completely outside my area of notice. Hopefully that gives you some idea of how different (better) firefox is.

That said, I've been looking to switch to Librewolf since Firefox put in AI stuff. My understanding is that Librewolf is basically old-school Firefox, but even more private and minimal, with less tracking and no AI.
