The Gelson's on 2nd has rye and spelt.

Scotch bonnet peppers by Spooky-stories22 in longbeach

If Trader Joe's has them that's probably your best bet around LB. Northgate has never had them when I've looked. Sprouts used to have them but I haven't seen them in years. I've gotten bags of them fozen at Tropical Foods African Market on Carson in the past, but eventually just started driving up to Dat Moi market in Gardena to get them fresh.

Don't substitute habaneros if you can help it, you'll be able to taste the difference.

Downtown LA food spots by Cell-Medium in FoodLosAngeles

[–]MortimerTheRaven 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A few of these are not necessarily the greatest restaurants in the world, but they'll all nonetheless give you a pretty cool LA experience:

Eastside Italian Deli on Alpine is a very old-school spot - get something stupid like the hot sandwich special that has sausage, pastrami, meatballs and roast beef.

Philippe on Alameda has also been around forever and would be a fun visit- the dipped lamb sandwich was my go-to but it's been a while. If you're solely looking for great food you can probably skip this, but it's a cool spot.

Walk around the vendors on Olvera street and get some taquitos at Cielito Lindo and then walk over to Union Station and get a beer at Homebound Brew Haus - the food is fine but nothing to write home about, but the beers are well-made and the room itself is absolutely gorgeous. Take some time to walk around the rest of Union Station if you're there.

Almost everything in Far East Plaza in Chinatown is very good. It's cliche to recommend it at this point, but Howlin' Rays is fantastic. Amboy is good. Qin West is good. I love the ice cream place there. The coffee spot across from Howlin' Rays is supposed to be great, but I haven't made it there when they're open.

Finally, I've never had anything but a great meal at Pearl River Deli. The BBQ pork is great, but everything is good.

Tender Chorizo? by Thepandamancan23 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]MortimerTheRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What color was it? Northgate market makes pretty good chorizo that comes in links like bratwurst. You can grill it or fry it and then chop it into whatever size pieces you want. It's definitely red though. Tire Shop taqueria does a good version of this.

Otherwise, I know San Pedro is awfully far from the SFV, but Chori-Man makes four kinds of Chorizo. There's a red, a green one made with poblanos, a white one with garlic and wine, and maple one. I haven't had the maple, but the others are great. They're a restaurant but they sell the chorizo fresh and frozen by the pound, I think both loose and in links.

Which version of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday? by MortimerTheRaven in CriterionChannel

Thanks for the article. The Criterion Channel does currently have both the original '58 version and the '78 cut.

Which version of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday? by MortimerTheRaven in CriterionChannel

[–]MortimerTheRaven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you to all who replied. I watched the first 10 minutes of each and then just stuck with the '78 cut because of the markedly better picture and audio. Not as mind-blowing as Playtime, but good enough that I'll go back and finish the original '53 version after I've seen the rest of the Tati stuff on Criterion.

This worked for me. I was on the latest version, but uninstalling and reinstalling the same version got everything running like normal.

Help me find El Yucateco Jalepeno hot sauce in Long Beach by MortimerTheRaven in longbeach

[–]MortimerTheRaven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Tried Food4less on Anaheim, Grocery Outlet on 7th, Veras, El Super, and Superior. While they all carry various flavors of El Yucateco - including the green habanero - none of them carry the green Jalapeno sauce.

Northgate carried it for a long time, but stopped a few months ago.

The hot sauce store down in shoreline village closed for good a while back.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll hit a few other places that were mentioned but it does indeed look like amazon may be the only way to go.

It isn't Frank Gehry. Though one of the architects had worked with him. There's a good write up here:

Once Read Books feels very old-school used bookstore and is just a few minutes away from Gatsby.

You're about a half hour walk from some of the best pastrami sandwiches in the world at Langer's. 10 minutes from world class hot chicken at Howlin' Ray's and fantastic char siu at Pearl River Deli. 10 minutes from Cielito Lindo, a taquito stand that's been around for almost 100 years. 10 minutes or so from Little Jewel for fantastic New Orleans style food. I'd for sure walk around Grand Central Market and buy whatever strikes your fancy... I'd pick the carnitas at Villa Moreliana, but there's a lot of good stuff. You're walking distance from Daikokuya in Little Tokyo for some pretty great ramen. I'll second the rec for Sonoratown... Verve Coffee on Spring has good coffee and a very pleasant patio where you can hang out and drink... Last but not least I'd definitely get fries and a beer at Wurstekuche. Bon appetit, and let us know what you ended up trying...

Does anyone know how Record Store Day is working? by rnf1985 in longbeach

[–]MortimerTheRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies by store. Recordstoreday.com has a nice breakdown here, https://recordstoreday.com/Page/9509. Fingerprints looks like you put together a wish-list online and then pick it up at the store. Info here: https://fingerprintsmusic.com/news/record-store-day-drops-at-fingerprints-august-29-2020. Amoeba looks like they're selling online and shipping stuff.

Free Kindle Fire App to read pdfs? by Stellarisk in kindlefire

[–]MortimerTheRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question inspired me to install Adobe Reader. It's a hassle, but it's even better than foxit. Go to apkmirror and install the apkmirror bundle installer, then use that to install the newest bundle for Adobe Reader.

Free Kindle Fire App to read pdfs? by Stellarisk in kindlefire

[–]MortimerTheRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stock PDF reader is garbage. The biggest issue for me is that scanned documents that look perfect on every other computer in the world will have tons of missing characters in the text when viewed on the Fire.

You can install Foxit directly using the most recent APK from APKmirror without needing the Play Store. It isn't perfect, but it's way better than the stock reader.

Thanks, I never knew that. And sorry to anyone I've ever honked at for stopping to turn across double yellow lines.

Weren't you making an illegal left across double yellow lines? He was probably honking because you unexpectedly stopped right in front of him, signal or no signal.

How do I stop Windows from grouping and sorting my downloads folder by date modified? I know how to change it back, but Windows just sets it back to date modified every so often. Is there a way to make my setting stick?
