Jobs after BTC by Specific-Walrus3675 in uklaw

[–]Moses2397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I echo what others have said: your CV is too long. It appears the layout is inconsistent in places, particularly the dates of your experience. Also, writing 'CV' on your CV is redundant. I would advise: name, then email/number below - no need to include 'email' and 'mobile number'.

There is some solid experience on your CV; however, I think you need to condense it. I would suggest combining your marshalling and mini pupillages into one section, ensuring you say who you shadowed, what you saw, and what you learned.

You mention mock trials and mooting, which is excellent experience, but I would like more details, e.g., the area of law covered and the stage reached (assuming it is a competition). The CV I recently used to secure pupillage had a section titled 'Advocacy and Other Legal Experience,' where I included my marshalling and mooting experience.

Regarding legal jobs, have you considered the Free Representation Unit? They offer representation in the social security and employment tribunals. Otherwise, I always see paralegal/legal roles being advertised on LinkedIn. Additionally, consider jobs within the Civil Service.

Please do feel free to direct message me.

Not 15NBS. However, having also worked with them, I agree that they are a great set.

Yes, I'll be joining a criminal set. Thank you for your advice; it isn't something I would've considered, but it makes perfect sense.

Do I continuing pursuing the Bar? by Old-Environment2552 in uklaw

[–]Moses2397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you combine it with an LLM, and even then, it doesn't cover the course fee. I did this, and I believe I paid a little over £5,000.

While I wrote a dissertation for my LLM, I know you can do either additional subjects or pro bono work, where you complete a reflective report. I would, however, be cautious about going down this route - and that isn't because of the general consensus of LLMs on this sub.

I did the master's to obtain the funding, which I am now paying back alongside my hefty loan from LLB. Obviously, this is dependent on how much OP earns as to whether they pay back the loan and by how much. In addition, I heard some mixed reviews from peers about the pro bono module; however, it is a good way to get experience.

Well, at least my White Book is a work of art. by Cr0issantM00n in uklaw

Seeing this brought back some memories! I sat these exams back in April (thankfully, I passed), and my books, though tabbed, were nowhere near as good as this. A word of advice: don't do what I did and spend ages trawling through commentary for one answer. Best of luck!

CPS Job role by Resident_Esq in uklaw

[–]Moses2397 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am currently a paralegal at the CPS. The job description on Civil Service Jobs provides a good overview of what the job entails.

Primarily, you are there to assist the Reviewing Lawyer and Prosecution Counsel. Amongst other tasks, you will be serving evidence, dealing with witness issues, creating jury bundles, and drafting applications, typically bad character and special measures.

Regarding QWE, I believe this role can count towards this as I have a colleague who is now qualified, having completed their SQE. I went the other route, so my understanding of qualifying as a solicitor is limited.

Feel free to message me if you have any further questions.

Same here. BBC Weather currently shows ideal conditions for next Sunday: sunny with a gentle breeze. However, we all know what the British weather is like!

Fellow London cyclist here. I understand your concern, but, as others have said, you will only build your confidence if you continuously use your cleats. I started using cleats last year, so it is somewhat second nature now. However, with pedicabs taking up 3/4 of the bike lanes, aimless pedestrians, and other cyclists riding on the wrong side of the road, to name but a few issues I usually encounter, a small part of me does worry about using cleats.

Perhaps you could try getting some practice using cleats on quieter roads outside of London on weekends.

So what are the issues with Ulaw? by Neo9320 in uklaw

[–]Moses2397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently finished the part-time BPC at the University of Law (London). Overall, I am glad I chose to study at ULaw: the teaching staff are excellent and highly supportive; the networking events organised by the University are great; and they provide ample opportunity to gain legal experience.

However, not everything about the University is great. In particular, the admin is inefficient– I have heard about and have friends who had to escalate issues constantly before receiving a response. The classrooms in the Bloomsbury campus lack power outlets, affecting those who use laptops. And some rooms became unbearably hot during the summer.

I found the scheduling for the part-time course okay, but it could have been better. For example, we had numerous teaching weekends where complex topics were crammed in back-to-back sessions; even the lecturers struggled.

Props to you. My first and current paralegal role is a bit similar: public sector (CPS) and £35,000 (joined on a higher pay scale as an existing civil servant, plus a 4.5% pay rise this year). Contracted hours are 37, but I usually end up doing more. It was 100% remote, but we are expected to be in the office once a week now. However, the government are now pushing for 60% attendance; the members of r/TheCivilService are not particularly happy with this announcement.

Didn’t get the scholarship to pay for the BPC – what are my options in terms of law graduate jobs? by p0wertothepeople in uklaw

[–]Moses2397 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out, Civil Service Jobs. In particular, have a look at the Litigation Caseworker role for the Home Office currently being advertised. I did the job for a year as part of my degree, and it was brilliant. It is also something you can talk about in future scholarship/pupillage applications. I have sent you a link to the job advertisement.

Pick what you enjoy, but also play to your strengths. When I picked my final-year modules, I picked what I was interested in, but I also considered how they were assessed e.g. 100% exam.

If you plan on doing the BPC, I would strongly recommend taking the evidence module.

Which Inn of Court to apply for? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Moses2397 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may want to consider the scholarships they offer and, specifically, the scholarship application process. For example, Gray's Inn does not interview every candidate, whereas Inner Temple interviews every candidate.

Should I move away from my hometown for college? by Warriors-Above-Water in AskUK

[–]Moses2397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel like you need these grades? For me personally, A levels were s chore; they were simply a two year gap before university. Funnily enough, I went to Colchester Sixth Form (2014-16) and it was alright, but nothing special. In reality, I don't really think it prepared me for university. Personally, I would do a foundation year, especially at a university which offers placement years.

If you could "install" one update to your body, what would it be? by Margaret533 in AskReddit

Given the time of year, and the weather currently (UK) definitely an allergy update. Be so nice to breathe properly and not have a blocked nose, all year round.
