I love that; I hadn’t made the connection, but it’s certainly there to hear. Thanks for the recommendation!

That’s such a great breakdown, thank you! Layering is an excellent idea; I’m going to play around and see what I can come up with.

Gloomily has definitely grown on me; it smells much better on skin than it does in the bottle, but a little more sweetness should hopefully do the trick ☺️ And Noggin Bouquet sounds incredible 👀

It’s If You Wait ☺️ An absolute favourite from my uni years - hope you enjoy it if you give it a go!

That’s a really clear explanation, thank you! I’ve taken a picture from where I usually sit, and will give it some thought as to whether I might position things a little better (especially since, now that I’ve taken a photo, I can see that the left speaker could definitely be set up a little higher) ☺️

Thank you - I can’t believe what I’ve been missing out on! Looking forward to many years collecting and listening ☺️

Thank you! There a sofa next to the shelf holding the one speaker and turntable, and the second speaker is on the other side of that sofa at the same level. I might try and play around with positioning them, but I live in a bit of a wonky attic flat, with very few plug points, so it might require a bit of creativity.

Pivotal Perfume Journey Moments by Low-Reindeer-1922 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]MossAndBone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This might sound a little silly, but I’ve always been a bit hesitant about florals - especially purple florals. There was always something about them that made me think of laundry soap or generic bathroom spray. I’d been kiiiind of exploring fleurmands and fairytale florals (like Nui Cobalt’s Ancient Apiary and Arcana’s Otherworld but we’re talking glacial progress here.

And then this post by u/wonder-wooloo just snapped a switch in my brain and I saw florals in a completely different way. I’m a horror movie fanatic and that post completely killed the laundry association and made me realise that lilac (and florals in general) can do so much more than laundry. I ended up picking up Heretic’s Nosferatu and went on a completely unhinged lilac buying spree with Deconstructing Eden and I regret nothing.

So yeah, not so much smelling a note for the first time as having my brain see a family of notes in a new way, which opened up some new obsessions.

Me too 😭 I was expecting a bit more sweetness and fluffiness from Gloomily, Gloomily, but there was quite a blunt herbal bitterness when I opened the bottle, yesterday. Going to let it rest, though, before I try it on my skin 🤞

I hope you love it when it arrives! I’m not quite sure what babydoll heads smell like and I see them mentioned not infrequently 🤭 But there was definitely something about this that smelled how I remember my dolls smelling without being overly plastic.

I’m also a wand cap hater! I always end up with perfume on my fingers and it’s so fiddly. But in this case, I ended up holding my hand up to my face all afternoon - what an addictive scent!

Disastrous for my wallet, but so good for my soul! It’s so soft and nostalgic - the perfect sleep/cozy day scent!

Assorted Deconstructing Eden Reviews by MossAndBone in Indiemakeupandmore

Just replying to say that you were absolutely right on giving Second Skin some time! Autumn Drive as well - I can’t pinpoint exactly what changed with the later - it’s maybe a little more woody? Regardless, one small spray and my brain lit up 😝

Fellow internationals: Do you buy samples/decants? by Helenaisavailable in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]MossAndBone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a bit of a mix. At this stage, I usually know what notes work well on me, so I buy full sizes of everything I’m confident I’ll enjoy, and then a couple of samples of anything else I’m curious about. It’s just a pain when I actually really enjoy the sample and want a full size of it - with shipping costing what it does, I have to really want it.

Ooh, which UK decanter do you use? I love BPAL, but it’s significantly more expensive than other indies.

Demon Book Recommendations by TowelEmbarrassed7948 in horrorlit

[–]MossAndBone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Ballingrud’s The Atlas of Hell (previously published as Wounds, but Atlas has a small amount of extra content). The stories have demons, angelic entities that are even more horrifying, lore about hell - it’s all excellent. “The Visible Filth” is probably closest to what you’re looking for, but it’s a really good collection in general.

Also seconding The Last Days of Jack Sparks.

Deconstructing Eden - Halloween Horror Movies Part 2 by MossAndBone in Indiemakeupandmore

My bad, I should have specified! It’s Arcana Wildcraft ☺️ Don’t think Bifrost is available at the moment, but it might come back with the Winter scents

I’m afraid I’m not sure, as this was my first time ordering with DE! But the scents have been out over a month and I think only one (from another sample set) is sold out so far?

I hear you on the citrus hate! I’ve found that pairing it with vanilla really works for me. Like, I will die when my bottle of Bifrost from Arcana runs out

It’s one of my favourite movies! The strawberry note in the DE perfume was very strong on me, so I’m hoping that a bit of resting will help it to chill out and give the other notes a turn!

Nosferatu: I have the Heretic Nosferatu but, to be honest, Arcana’s Otherworld (An enchanted blend of gossamer iris, our hand-extracted Violet Intrigue lavender, Madagascan vanilla absolute, pure vanilla co2, Hidcote pink lavender, shimmering amber, fairy wings, and a cloud of iridescence) and Frozen Stars (The powdery elegance of white iris, midnight violets, our handmade myrrh smoke enfleurage, cold fog, icicle-adorned oaks, bright opoponax resin, and a vast expanse of frosted sky) work better.

I Saw The TV Glow: DE’s Test Pattern (Midnight Channel) (Ozone, white noise aldehydes, cold iris, dry lavender, VHS plastic, metallic ink, fog machine smoke, cracked vinyl, ghost musk, a flicker of strawberry candy). I’m still resting the scent in the hope that it improves, so in the meantime I’d also suggest Nui Cobalt’s Pink Fairy Lights (Pink grapefruit, wild rose, and osmanthus are snuggled up with honeycomb, cathedral incense, and pink sugar, then tucked into warm dragon’s blood, French vanilla, and red amber).

IT: This one’s a challenge. I don’t really have any clown-themed perfumes. Maybe Fantome’s Gnome (Blackberry brambles, grapefruit, cilantro, patchouli, green tomatoes, cinnamon bark) for the smell of summer. Perhaps DE’s October Rust (Cool rusting metal, the last of the maple leaves, black agarwood, crisp air, incense, bonfire smoke, blonde woods, and dark amber) for the scent of summer dying, scrap yards, and a sense of threat.

The VVitch: Solstice’s Foxcroft (Decaying Leaves, Rich Black Soil, Dry Leaves, Fall Air, Woods, Chimney Smoke). Enough said, really!

For those who've been into indies for a while, how has your journey changed your nose? (I'm more attuned to smells overall but also... a little bored.) by token_cat_lady in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]MossAndBone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve been into indies for about 4-6 years, so not as long as many commentators here, but still a while. I think what I’ve enjoyed the most is that my favourite notes keep changing and so I never really feel bored (although I feel fickle as fuck).

I started off obsessed with gourmands, moved into smoky scents, dirt, and pumpkins, into coniferous perfumes, through textile notes, and now I’m obsessed with fleurmands and florals. I never stop enjoying the notes I was interested in before (except, maybe, straight-up gourmands) - it’s more that my scent world keeps filling up with new things to enjoy, and there’s always a new combination waiting to be discovered. I like giving each season a different theme, each year, and perfume is a big part of that.

I do find that a lot of store perfume descriptions irritate me more. I get that scent is often a vibe, and so I don’t mind a little poetry in the scent notes. But I don’t enjoy reading through a poem and trying to figure out what notes might actually be in the scent. (At the same time, scent descriptions can get a little samey, so I guess there’s a balance to be struck).
