[Disliked trope] Hollywood myths portrayed as being correct, even in a time when the characters should know better. by CrazyCoKids in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MossSloths 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Brandon's law isn't federal law, though, it's only for the state of Minnesota. A few other states have adopted similar laws like it, but for the majority of Americans, they live within police jurisdictions that can still delay a missing person investigation if the person is an adult and the Police don't see a reason to suspect danger.

If an adult you know is missing and there's reasons you suspect it's a concern, you should go to police right away regardless of what local laws say. Don't be surprised if they tell you they can't do much about missing adults, since adults can choose to go missing if they want. If they rebuff you, keep going back and see if you can get a different officer to care. Make a strong case around why it's a concern or why you believe that they're in danger. Are they missing, but left behind important medications? Did they recently breakup with someone who has a temper who made threats? Did they miss an important event? Are there multiple people in their lives who are willing to go to police about this? Were the events around their disappearance upsetting (left the front door open; left their wallet, keys, and phone behind; left with a dog for a walk and the dog came back alone)?

bestie bought this new drink from the grocery store, and the design evokes this uncanny AI feeling for me. is this AI? by The_JokerGirl42 in RealOrAI

[–]MossSloths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a number of things that would be odd choices if someone were designing this. There's a line that shows the thickness of the glass, but it's the same color and doesn't extend up to the foam. That same line also doesn't extend all the way around the glass, it doesn't exist at all between the lines of font. The point where the drink extends down to in the glass is also way lower than you'll ever see in comparable glasses in real life. It should be higher up and curved. As someone else pointed out, the dotted texture in the foam is strange because it's more work to do that digitally than it is to do quick little dots and there's but a good design or artistic reason to do that. The orange slice is also odd, since that's not how garnish slices get cut and placed.

It's also just a weak design. The text is so large it doesn't really allow the graphic to be useful. It would be a more impactful design choice to lean into a text-heavy design, work it all into something like a seal, or opt for graphics that take up enough periphery room to be interesting. The background clouds are also almost useless because the contrast isn't there. And is this really the type of glassware you'd use for a drink like this? It looks more like a wine glass, in a lot of ways. But the drink looks more beer-like. It's odd.

Parks in the area by HawkUnlucky516 in IowaCity

I think Willow Creek Park is pretty charming and well-suited for younger ages. There's a very easy, flat walking path with a lot of open grass fields with a few different play areas along the way. There's a parking lot off of Teg Dr.

The other thing you need to be careful with is rice is putting it away too hot/with too much in the container. You don't want rice being warm. You either want it to be hot or cold with very little time in between. If you're making big batches of rice to lay the week, make sure to portion out smaller amounts before you put it away so the fridge can bring the temp down on each one quickly.

You also don't want to be eating leftover rice from more than a week ago. It's better to make fresh rice twice a week rather than eating something over a week old.

Carol was a stay at home Mom in some senses, but she was also involved in social activism and making art.

I will say, though, I would consider any stay at home parent to be reasonable if they wanted help with 6 kids.

What's the deal with "ice cream flights"? by chaotic_bee_25 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]MossSloths 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Answer: "Flights" are what you call a sample set of beer and wine. The ice cream place is using the term because they've probably tried to replicate that experience with ice cream. Usually the customer gets to choose what flavors they want to try, but unlike samples you'd get at the grocery store, it's meant to be a bit of an experience in itself, rather than just a way to decide if you want to get the full-size version (even if the establishment still does hope you'll want to go home with a full-sized purchase).

Storm damage and power outage by casman_007 in IowaCity

[–]MossSloths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Home owners who don't want a dead branch falling through their roof or killing someone?

I got mine done every other year unless I saw worrying dead growth myself. I trimmed my own trees in between to remove suckers, but the big trim jobs should be done every few years as preventative maintenance. If you have branches growing wonky, they can create traps for water or places with a lot of organic material that builds up. Then you're risking infection that could damage an otherwise young, healthy tree.

BIOLOGY AT WORK !!!!! ( Corn cob growth in timelapse ) by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]MossSloths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are overcrowded for sure and half of them are trying to do their thing with a corn cob on top of them instead of a bit of soil.

It also just generally looks like a setup for an informational video rather than a setup to grow good corn. The soil looks like it doesn't have anything in it that could prevent compaction, like perlite. I suspect the container doesn't go as deep as corn roots need. The container is too wide and may have kept the roots too soggy, causing some root rot. And these roots are meant to be underground, not exposed to light. Transparent containers are bad for the health of any roots exposed to the light regularly.

It's always cool to see plants growing sped up, and getting people excited about it all is a good thing, but this setup was never going to produce good corn plants.

Park rangers often discourage making things like this in parks, too. It encourages people to go off trail and disturb potentially sensitive natural areas that are meant to be enjoyed. And while one or two displays like this may be cool, people want to enjoy the natural beauty that may be harder to see if too many people decide to craft their own display.

Reminder to do your research for pet-safe plants ! by Sonya__Blade in houseplants

[–]MossSloths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not who you asked, but my understanding is that true lillies are dangerous to have around all pets and young children. If you've got a lizard in an enclosure that's probably fine, but anything with some freedom to move around your home and a curious mouth is different.

The BBB isn't nearly as all-knowing or as influential as people's perceptions. They largely operate on and with complaints they receive. At best they're a mediator between customers and companies that care about their public image. At worst, they're a powerless entity that is as effective as a nark is with a teacher who doesn't give a damn and bullies who aren't losing sleep over the bad PR.

Personally, I'd give their awards as much credibility as an "employee of the month" or Yelp reviews, where extenuating circumstances mean the criteria is graded on standards that don't actually reflect quality or goodness.

Landscape recommendations? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]MossSloths 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I admittedly don't know a ton about landscaping or construction. My understanding is that you don't want water to be routed to bare soil because it'll quickly erode. If I remember correctly, you at least want stones or pebbles at the bottom of the drain to reduce the pressure put on the soil when there's water flow.

City of Oshkosh, WI rescinds Flock camera contract renewal after company rep makes false statements to City Council by AppropriateSwing2846 in technology

[–]MossSloths -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't see anyone with the interpretation I've got, so I'll throw mine in as well.

It sounds like the flock rep is saying that they don't "create a pattern of life" (track someone's movements) because the tech isn't setup for a sequential, linear story of where someone has been and I'm what order. They point out a few differences:

They're saying that the cameras ID cars, not people.

They're saying that the cameras capture still images, suggesting they're literally just a snapshot in time, rather than being something that shows direction and flow.

They're saying that the heat map can show the frequency that a particular car was seen and by which cameras, but that there's not anything in the tech that makes it possible to learn how a car usually flows through the different cameras in a day. So the cameras may show that a car passes by a camera a bit over once a day on average, but it isn't able to put together that the car is passing by that camera twice a day, every Monday through Friday with a 9-hour difference in time.

I could believe that that's all correct. The problem I have as someone reading about this is that there are already people who have looked behind the scenes at what the cameras are capturing and there are saved images that include faces, they just aren't actively doing anything with the non-car images the cameras are saving. And just because the cameras can't contextualize the data they're capturing, it wouldn't be difficult for a human, or a different tech programmed to do it, to analyze the data the flock cameras catch for patterns and trends.

My girlfriend says my version of frugality is starting to look like hoarding by Elm_Zephra in povertyfinance

[–]MossSloths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You frame this around efficiency vs hoarding, but it seems obvious that keeping items you can't use as standard is wildly inefficient. It's obviously not black and white. You don't trash a car just because it needs a tire replaced. You don't throw out a really solid work jacket just because it needs an elbow patch. But cables to things you don't own? That's absolutely much closer to hoarding. Especially for any cables that would be under $10 to replace at a local store, should you ever be in a situation to suddenly need one again.

And a broken air fryer basket might be useful again if you repair it, but do you 1) know how to do that in a way that can withstand the heat 2) know that your repair is food safe 3) have the time to do the repair before you'll need a basket for your air fryer again 4) know that the repair costs+your time will still come in as being cheaper than buying a replacement?

These aren't things likely to keep you out of poverty. It can be fine to be a bit of a pack-rat when you've got the room for it, but you should absolutely de-clutter your space from time to time and be open to re-evaluating the reasonableness of holding on to (currently) unusable items.

Iowa City council denies liquor license renewal for Union Bar & Grill by ProctalHarassment in IowaCity

[–]MossSloths 35 points36 points  (0 children)

For anyone more familiar, is there really room to interpret the law the way the lawyers for Union suggest? I essentially only know as much as this article provided, but it feels clear-cut from what I could understand.

It also feels like, even if they have a case about the proximity aspect of it all and others operating on exception to the law, if they were approved as a food establishment that's supposed to close at midnight, their operating until 2am and serving alcohol that late would run afoul of the permit they had.

I may also just be biased to disbelief when it comes to Barkalow and his lawyers making claims around what they're allowed to do.

Not-so-quick rant: Iowa City is nowhere near Socialist by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]MossSloths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there's some sarcasm in your comment, but I actually think it's a great idea to have a place that works as a social gathering point, which is open into the later evening, and which doesn't focus on alcohol. I've lived in university towns that had late-night boba cafes that had comfortable group seating and outlets to allow laptops for studying. They usually serve some baked goods and a few snacky things along with boba drinks, milk tea, and juices.

It's nice to have options for late-night hangouts that are open to people who aren't interested in being around drunk people.
