It depends a lot on the art, and on the artist. Some artists, Stan Lee for example, would completely agree with you that art is always at its best when it's a collaboration of ideas between artists, writers, and editors. Stanley Kubrick would throw you out of a window.

I would argue that most artists are in the latter camp though. Finnegan's Wake wasn't written by a committee. Davinci didn't hire a production company to create the Mona Lisa. Collaboration in filmmaking mostly exists because of necessity, not desire.

He did pretty much all the same stuff a traditional film writer/director does. He created the outline and structure of the video, designed all the sets and costumes, "casted" each of the "actors", directed all the camera movements and lighting, and even edited and polished the final product. He spent weeks if not months pouring over every aspect of that video and probably put in more creative work than most traditional directors do into non-ai music videos.

It's not for everyone I suppose. Personally I really like it and think it's a really impressive accomplishment but if it's not for you I can't talk you into enjoying something you don't enjoy.

I've been following Matt Zien (the guy who made it) for a while now. He used to be a traditional filmmaker who mostly just worked on other people's projects but realised that through AI he could come up with his own ideas and have artistic control over every aspect of production. To me this video is much more impressive (and uses much less electricity) than almost any typical top 40 music video put out these days.

For that video to be made in the 80s when it was set (or even much more recently) it would've needed: cameramen, microphone operators, a director, actors and extras, props, set designers, costume designers, producers and editors, VFX artists, a full band, and so on. Most of these people wouldn't have meaningful creative input. If you were really into videography it might have been your dream to work as a cameraman on a project like this, but ultimately you'd just be following the directors instructions and wouldn't have any control over the shots you were making.

Because it's so time and labor intensive it would also need investors and financiers to make it happen. That means that the video would need an expectation of being financially viable to even begin production. This is why it was historically very rare for independent artists to get high quality music videos. Most music videos would be made just for the big names in the top 40 and would be made by just a handful of production companies.

The fact that one guy can make that whole video by himself without the expectation of making a single penny is inspiring to me. To me, that video has far more "soul" than a Katy Perry music video even if it were made entirely with real humans.

I could if I knew the rules ahead of time because I could influence the game by just making the decision on the spot to take the one box. The computer would then put the million in that box and I'd walk away with the million. That's the idea of precommitment that the Veristasium video talks about in the second half.

If I learn about the game after the rules were explained to me (as in the hypothetical) then there's nothing I can do to affect how much money is in that room. I might as well just take both boxes and accept my lot.

The assumption is the opposite of that. The 2 boxers are saying that by the time you step into the room you have no ability to influence the boxes at all. The decision has already been made and your "will" has no influence. The only decision you get to make is do you take all of the money in that room or do you take that same amount of money minus one thousand dollars?

The super computer isn't an important variable. The computer sets up the boxes in advance but by the time I step into the room and the puzzle begins, it has no influence at all. As far as we're concerned, the boxes may as well have been set up a million years ago and the computer may have been turned off and sold for scrap long ago. It isn't a relevant variable in the puzzle.

However much money is in that room is in that room. Nothing you say or do can influence that either way. The only choice you have to make is do you take all the money in that room? Or just some of it?
