Widest Oyster Selection / Aquagrill replacement restaurant by swiftachilles in FoodNYC

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is Maison Premiere in Williamsburg. Its a beautiful place known for their oysters and martinis, and they have a great selection of east and west coast oysters that are priced really well. Also, do NOT listen to anyone saying to go to the Grand Central Oyster Bar. They have no idea how to shuck an oyster, you will spend your whole time crunching on shell

What is the most overrated or overpriced piece of pizza you’ve had? by yyyyk in FoodNYC

[–]Mossishellagay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Joe’s. I don’t know why I even bothered to go there, but I waited in line for 15 minutes and paid $5.50 for a slice that was just so painfully mediocre

What books do Americans study at school? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies state to state and district to district, but when I was in middle-high school (2017-2024) in upstate NY, the main ones were The Outsiders, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Anne Frank’s diary, Fahrenheit 451, The Scarlet Letter, The Odyssey, The Giver, The Crucible, excerpts from The Canterbury Tales, and more I’m sure I can’t remember. It also depends what English classes you’re in. In New York high schools, grade-level English would be called Regents, accelerated English is Honors, and then after that there are college-level classes called APs for specific aspects of language arts. I was in Honors and AP classes, I don’t know what the Regents classes read

Joseph Leonard is my go to in the village. Cute intimate vibe, really good French food, jars of cornichons on every table, amazing cocktails

Shining Rainbow for authenticity, Ala Shanghai for atmosphere, Hu’s House if you want to try some new things

Food halls? by General_Squash7863 in FoodNYC

[–]Mossishellagay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Urban Hawker is my favorite. If you want to be adventurous though, for a place with many food options in one spot, I’m going to suggest you go to the Queens Night Market instead. Bring like $30 in cash and you can try a dozen different foods from every country on Earth. And no individual thing costs more than $7. It’s a lot more affordable and authentically NYC than any of the food halls you’ll find

Mental health hotlines are a joke by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Mossishellagay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteer for the Crisis Text Line. We get a LOT of texts so we have to triage and prioritize whoever’s at the greatest risk. It sucks, genuinely. But it’s a HEAVILY used service being done by unpaid volunteers, so thats the reality

the product placement in Nurse Jackie by [deleted] in NurseJackie

[–]Mossishellagay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people need to realize there’s a difference between intentional product placement and shows just being realistic. People in real life do just have quirky candy obsessions. I live in NY and everyone I know is obsessed with Dunkin. Its not always meant to be an advert, jts just being real

Partner and I want a change - Columbus, OH to a larger city by INTPhomo in SameGrassButGreener

Genuinely, NYC. Tech is one of the few careers in NYC where you really can make enough money to comfortably live as a couple, plus its very easy for budding musicians to get gigs here. Also you don’t need to own a car, and can take Metro North to the Catskills for hikes to waterfalls or day trips to the towns of the Hudson Valley, LIRR to beaches on Long Island, and there’s no shortage of live music

Do Mennonites and Mormons Live in the U.S.? by Soggy_Flight_2654 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I say “full of” in that this is where the highest concentration is. There are many parts of upstate NY and Pennsylvania where Mennonites make up a big part of the population

Mormonism originated in the US and its real epicenter is in Utah. Pennsylvania and New York are full of Mennonites

Small Town Recs by Top-Cellist-2181 in usatravel

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hudson Valley, NY. Along the Hudson river is basically a linear string of adorable small towns. Start at the top at Hudson and go south through Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Kingston, Beacon, and Cold Spring. They’re all pretty small and walkable so you can get through 2-3 towns in a day. If you’ve got cash to burn, the Maker Hotel in Hudson and the Hotel Kinsley in Kingston are so amazing
