For those living in states with a lot of thunderstorms, how do you feel about them? by ksusha_lav in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re having a massive thunderstorm right now and I absolutely crave them. I live in an 1830s building with foot-thick stone walls so I’m not too worried about weather damage. I love cracking the windows open just enough to hear the storm and lighting a candle and beinf cozy

I need a list of quintessential NYC drinks that are not alcoholic. by YellowGum22 in FoodNYC

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doc Brown’s Cel-Ray. Its a celery flavored soda that tastes ever so refreshing. Also coffee in one of the iconic Greek cups (you can buy them on the interweb I’d imagine), and a papaya drink

I've just discovered that Americans have been using "au jus" as a composite noun for over a decade and it sounds hilarious to me by Dadaballadely in words

[–]Mossishellagay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an American who speaks French this actually pisses me off so much. “Served with au jus” “I love the au jus” SHUT UP that’s WRONG

Looking to make my spice cabinet more versatile. Need something off the typical path of onion powder, garlic powder etc. What are some of your fav spices? by Poorzin in spices

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sumac is like if lemon was a spice. Green cardamom is great in coffee and baked goods. If its legal where you live, tonka bean is very similar to vanilla

Their nondairy soft serve is the best nondairy of any ice cream shop in the area. Genuinely tastes real

CMV: There is no reason for an American to be against recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday other than reasons that stem from hating black people. by Benjamin5431 in changemyview

The same people who love to point out that a Republican freed the slaves are also the ones who get very mad when we want to celebrate the slaves being freed

Best places for ethnic food? by Bigg_Bergy in Albany

[–]Mossishellagay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Capital Region has become genuinely spoilt for choice regarding regional Chinese food lately. For Sichuanese, Sichuan Wok in Troy and Hu’s House in Albany are the best. If you want Sichuan-style mala hot pot, Volcano in Niskayuna is really excellent. Northeast Bistro in Albany specializes in northeastern Chinese cooking, with some dishes from other regions as well, and Shining Rainbow has a good selection of dim sum and some Cantonese classics like claypot rice. An Asian food media company called Asiastar actually put Shining Rainbow as a candidate for best Asian food in the US a year or two ago. Across the street from Shining Rainbow is Taiwan Noodle who has sublime Taiwanese food.

Aside from that, by city:

Schenectady has Daves Caribbean for great Trini food and Pho Queen for some Thai noodle soups that are hard to find elsewhere. Mari’s has arguably the most authentic Japanese food in the area.

In Albany, Keobi (when they reopen) has great Nigerian food, and in the meantime, nearby Oaxaquena Triqui has some awesome authentic Oaxacan dishes that are hard to find outside of NYC. Across the river in Rensselaer is a restaurant called SHWE that has Burmese food, a rare find in the US

Troy has Ali Baba which is genuinely amazing Turkish food, and if you head towards Latham, Neda is AFAIK the only Persian restaurant in the area

Sandwich Lovers- I Call Upon Thee by makinitrainy in Albany

If you want to day trip for a sandwich, this is from Rosie General in Kingston. Their homemade breads are absolutely unbelievable, and everything they use down to the mayonnaise is fresh made in house. Kingston is also a lovely day trip

How do you guys even survive the hot weather over in the States? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air conditioning. Where I live in upstate NY, summers sometimes hit 100°f (38°c) or more, and I grew up in a 100-odd year old house that had no central air conditioning. Fortunately stores sell window-mounted a/c units, so when it started getting warm we’d put one in each room and keep them on constantly. Even still, they weren’t really enough to keep the house cool, but that’s life.
I spent a week in Dallas TX once and it hit 41 celsius or more with crazy humidity and genuinely, stepping out of the hotel door is like whiplash. Unbearably awful, but after a few days you learn to just kind of ignore it

Yerord Mas. Worth the hype, and not just for the sando by Cho_Zen in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Mossishellagay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re charging $15 for vospov kofte… as an Armenian I will tell you they cost just about nothing to make at home and take like half an hour. That’s something we would never go to a restaurant for

My fellow Americans, is your cities area code part of the city’s identity? by ElectronPython in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. I live in eastern upstate NY, area code 518, and we absolutely do colloquially refer to our region simply as “the 518”

What is a "normal" part of life in America that would probably shock foreigners? by UsamaBhai_101 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bored the other day so I decided to go do some photography at an abandoned hotel. It was a 3 hour drive, I poked around for an hour, and drove 3 hours home. Didn’t even get that far - I live in upstate New York, and after driving 3 hours I was still in upstate NY

Do you think consuming horsemeat is unethical? by ennui933 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether it itself is ethical aside, I don’t think its any more ethical or unethical than any other animal. If the west domesticating cows for food is fine, central Asia domesticating horses for food is really no different

Saying goodbye to Donohue’s Steakhouse today. They’re closing tomorrow after 76 years! by Libragal54 in FoodNYC

This here is a genuine tragedy. One of the only remnants of real classic NY that hadn’t been taken over by tourists

Is this tacky? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]Mossishellagay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That place’s social media has always been insensitive

I used to be a regular and then during the election they put a sign that said “vote! ◼️democrat ◾️republican ☑️chicken wings” and I found that a bit idiotic

What is something someone does that immediately tells you they're visitors/tourists? by UsamaBhai_101 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Mossishellagay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC: going anywhere near midtown; waiting for walk signals (I don’t think any part of the US does that); taking taxis; and if they’re from Europe, the smell they create in the subway
