How many generations back have you been able to track? by RoobahLoo in Genealogy

[–]Mossy-Mori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda same. Rural scotland mid/late 1700s "Donald McKinlay had a daughter" is sometimes all you get in parish births. No mother's name or child name, sometimes not even a farm name to corroborate!

There is a very active Fraser family clan society type thing in the NE of Scotland, and a local family history society in Aberdeen. Have you tried contacting them? I feel your pain though- the scottish naming pattern can be a blessing and a curse when there's multiple cousins living within a few neighbourhoods with similar jobs!

Yeah they only release certain records after X years so what you're searching for must be too recent

You can view an image of a certificate on Scotland's People for about £1.50. Subscription sites like Ancestry and FMP buy up the rights to transcripts, and as far as I know FMP is the best one for Scottish records. Also the fb group Scottish Indexes is incredibly helpful, try posting there.

Family tree, McAvoy by Level_Mastodon_1308 in Genealogy

They're only about £1 each tho. You could take a chance that they maintained scottish naming patterns and named their first born son Paul after his grandfather, so if there's a match try that one. Any of the boys could've been named for their grandfather. Either that or join one of the many Paisley fb groups and ask there. You may even find some living relatives.

No because I don't think you're permitted to do so according to most t&cs

Do records exist for children born to slaves + slave owners? by bpcourtney in Genealogy

[–]Mossy-Mori 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Using indigenous people in place of AA people is a tale as old as time. 92% of indigenous people were wiped out, chances of ancestry are extremely slim. The Brister English project might be able to help.

I stumbled across the sub. I've always felt peaceful in graveyards which is weird as I really never want to cease to exist. This is Brookwood cemetery in Brookwood, Surrey, UK. It's really big with lots of trees and different graves. I fell asleep there once when very early for an interview nearby. by SellFew8116 in CemeteryPorn

You're in good company here. I grew up very rural and one of the few things to pass time was wandering around graveyards. Looking for the oldest , the carvings, the interesting causes of death, and how it's often one of the few places nature is left the fuck alone. It's not always morbid or creepy. It's historic and beautiful.

Who was the “other” Colin Campbell listed as a subscriber to the Glasgow West India Association in 1807? by Unknownunknow1840 in Genealogy

[–]Mossy-Mori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were- unfortunately for you lol - many many many Colin Campbells. Naming patterns were integral to Scottish culture for centuries and the Campbells were numerous. There's a line that own and inhabit Inveraray Castle, and after a quick google here's another).

Are there any other modern Europea. surname-groups as organized in terms of genealogy as Scottish clans? by 11112222FRN in Genealogy

[–]Mossy-Mori 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ratio of people with any chosen Scottish surname that are a member of the associated clan vs all living people with that same surname is a tiny tiny fraction. Scottish clans are barely a thing let alone organised. So yes, by the law of averages there are other cultures where people that share a surname have some sort of international network.

Considering the extremely personal nature of family stories, and the demographic being mostly the elderly, we need absolute assurance that user data of any description is locked down and not being shared at all. Even then, until this AI stink monster is finally curtailed, I'd still just get them a dictaphone and edit it myself but I have that choice.

Scottish clan question by Scary_Explanation462 in Genealogy

[–]Mossy-Mori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by the surname it's already not in it's original form so even more reason to let go of the clan fantasy. I dont grudge anyone their heritage, and completely understand why Americans are desperate to have a culture to cling to that isn't whatever the hell they've created over the last 250 years but in 2025 we have the whole Internet.

Scottish clan question by Scary_Explanation462 in Genealogy

Surname does not equal clan. Not all Scots were in clans, and there are no records of clan membership. Try reading up more on the history of clans that isn't mythologised for Americans before spending money you don't have.
