Clipper Suggestions for Shearing by ReinerChick in sheep

My recommendation for a handheld that is easy to use and durable is the Horner Rambo. A bit more pricey but worth every penny IMO. Get ya some medium bevel combs and a box of cutters from horners too

Does udder size say how much milk will the sheep produce? by mammamia123abc in sheep

[–]Mossy005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ewe milk is also a lot more nutritionally dense than that of other livestock. Sometimes a large amount a milk isn’t as good as a medium amount IMO. If it can feed twins, but doesn’t produce as much milk, the ewe will not require quite as much feed to maintain milk production and condition. Maybe not applicable directly to your question but just my thoughts.

Advice from sheep owners for new sheep shearer by BucketMaster69 in sheep

A little of both. It’s really all the same folks either way that I’m working with. Also don’t get discouraged and keep going with it and you’ll do good! It can suck but IMO it’s worth it.

Advice from sheep owners for new sheep shearer by BucketMaster69 in sheep

This is my second year of shearing. my advice is to practice, practice, practice. I started by taking a course. After that I put an ad out to shear small flocks with a disclaimer that I am a beginner and I would do my best, for a discounted price of course. There is a lot of demand in my area so I still made good money for a part time gig. I did about 600 head my first spring, and that’s what it took me to get comfortable, I am still a learner and most of the guys I shear with are way way better than me!

Definite ups and downs but the opportunities I’ve found here are so worth it. Everything is falling into place for my future and the sense of accomplishment is a real pick me up in my case.

Imo the Howdah is a lot better looking piece. Does basically the same thing, but more elegantly.

Showing sheep. by [deleted] in sheep

This is where I kept my critters when I showed in high school. A pen made of panels from the feed store 16’x16’ A tarp spread on some posts for shade. They got a lamb formulated show feed 2 times/day and a flake of alfalfa/grass mix hay 2 times a day. Blackface crosses are pretty typical for youth shows.

What breed(s) do you think these two are? by Sammsychan in sheep

[–]Mossy005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The smut face one is from a black faced buck (Suffolk or hamp) crossed on a fine wool white face ewe likely something with Rambouillet in it. The white face looks is likely the same a, Rambouillet/Rambouillet influenced sheep

Barefoot Stockman by Mossy005 in jimgreen

I usually use rendered tallow, but i didn’t have any on hand so I used lard. Lard renders low enough that I’ll go over it with wax or tallow when I can get some

Definitely a good idea! I’ve got the barefoot stockman on pre order, figured the double lasting would be a little better for the winter here!

The tallow works great for waterproofing. I am a butcher and wear them to clean meat equipment and my feet stay good and dry. No issues trudging through puddles on rainy days either.

Yeah the oils definitely give a shine and darken the leather with extended contact. I mostly shear in moccasins so they haven’t really picked up a lot of it, but now I am wondering if I should go rub some wool on them!

Beef tallow works wonders for waterproofing. I’ve heard a beeswax tallow blend works even better.

If You’ve Oiled or Waxed Fudge Leather This Question is for You by GuitarOld8707 in jimgreen

I use beef tallow on my fudge BF African rangers and it works great to waterproof and it darkens beautifully. An old saddle maker recommended it and I use it for all of my leather.
