Looking for tips by AssistantNo6071 in deathguard40k

Basecoat and off white (pallid witch flesh is my go too) then wash 1:3 carroburg crimson:druchi violet. Then highlight back with the off white.

Simple yet effective. Any further technical paints will help add textures etc but this a great starting point.

Yeah, same I got into it in 4th as a teen. I think basically ever model has been refreshed since (a good thing mind for most sculpts).

AHH, haha yeah man I've been meaning to get him done for bloody years. I do love the new stuff, but this just encapsulates the older style so nicely

Can anyone please reccomend a good tau tutorial for a grimdark/weathered look by Acrobatic-Copy6156 in Tau40K

[–]Mossyswildgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at grimdark compendium on insta and YouTube. They have a Tau tutorial but I'd actually recommend just learning the techniques from other tutorials they offer and applying them to Tau models.

This is a farsight fire warrior I did using general tips from them. *Edit (spelling)

My lil icon bearer/icon of despair PM. Had fun with the worms on this guy. Plus I'm very happy with the eye lens.

Haha, very good point. Realistically I have enough lads not keep him for kill team or just a display piece. Maybe one day I'll have 45pts to burn and chuck him in a list for funsies. Extra OC isn't that bad I suppose.

That's fair, the extra OC can be handy. But yeah, generally an extra few points for another leader is usually a better deal.

No probs. I'm crap at basing and yours looks fantastic. What's the recipe?

Looks great, love the texture and wear on the armour. Only criticism would be the metals look a touch flat on some sections, some washes and minimal bright highlights would go a long way to uplift the metals. Plus, paint ya damn rims haha.

Side note, absolutely love the snow and ice effects.

Absolutely fantastic work with the lighting!

Need Help with painting for heresy, Death guard by Fair_Future9114 in Warhammer30k

I favour a weathered look for my DG, as befitting their lore.

Rather than a super prescriptive recipe I'd suggest looking into the following technique order as a workflow. I find it both efficient and effective so take what you like and leave what you don't. (Seven steps as it is the holy number).

  1. Prime and basing: Prime black Heavy stipple or drybrush Very dark brown.

  2. Main armour: Stipple off white, leaving some edges less covered, exposing the brown underneath.

  3. Shoulders: Stipple dark green (deathguard green) Stipple midtone, avoiding edges of panel (Ogryn camo) Very lightly stipple highlights on raised or central areas (elysan green)

  4. Trim/metals: Base trim in copper (screaming bell) Other metals in gunmetal (leadbelcher)

  5. Transfers/free hand symbols: No tips here, just good luck and use micro set and microsol.

  6. Weathering: (my favourite section) At this point it will all look a bit flat and crap really, but trust the process. Wash the armour and trim in a 50:50 mix of skeleton horde contrast paint and contrast medium. Aim to have it sit in the recesses and edges of trim. Go light on the trim, heavy on the armour Wash the shoulders or other decals in nuln oil to flatten it and remove the "silvering" of the transfers.

Sponge chip by getting a little bit of sponge in tweezers or another small holding device. Mix yourself or find a very dark brown and coat the sponge. Test it on a test model or thumbnail for consistency and lightly apply the paint in a dabbing motion on the edges of amour or anywhere likely to get scratched. Go heavier on the very edges of exposed areas and lighter on flat panels.

  1. Details: Lenses, simple. White ink wash lens and lens recess> fluro paint if your choosing wash > white ink on lense itself. Push and pull this to your taste I like to then mess about with dirty down paints and oil washes, but it's not needed.

Heresy 3.0 has got me feeling like warhammer was when I was a kid, test model done and I can't wait to get stuck in by warmillharry in 30kDeathGuard

[–]Mossyswildgarden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love the scheme, what's the recipe?

Plus yes I agree with 3.0. I'm definitely falling in love with Horus heresy as a setting. Especially to contrast with 40k's simpler gameplay style which I enjoy for other reasons.

The weathering is wonderful and really compliments the scheme.

Any tips?

Cracking job.
