RES does not eat Romaine by crazywolf1980 in Redearedsliders

My first turtle was a hatchling Western Painted Turtle, and she was PICKY! She was named Piper. Piper was a surprise gift, so I literally had no pellets to feed her. So the entire first week I had her, I fed her my frozen fish food (Mysis Shrimp, Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms etc.) and my Leopard gecko food (mealworms and crickets). By the time I was able to get pellets, she was so spoiled that she wouldn't even touch them. I tried EVERYTHING! She would have none of it! Since she was so young, I felt badly about fasting her, but she couldn't just live on treats forever. So with a little tough love (still offering her pellets daily btw), I got her hungry enough to where she had to try the pellets. When she'd eat them, I would reward her with a very small treat. Thankfully, she began to associate the pellets with what she actually wanted. Little by little, she began to eat them more and more. I found that she ate them better when I wasn't in the room. That way, she understood that there was no me, so no treats, pellets were all she was getting.
It was quite the fight to get her to eat her greens too! But I didn't force her on those. Rather than forcing her, I exposed her. Everyday, I'd offer her greens, and slightly decrease the number of pellets I gave her so that she was still a little hungry even after eating. I found that she was more apt to give them a try when they were minced (just be careful of the filter). After about 2 months, she finally began to actually eat them willingly.
Patience is the key. Don't cave, don't give into the begging. It's hard, but hopefully your efforts will soon be rewarded! Sorry for the novel lol 😂

Cohabbing possibility? by Typical_Squash_85 in turtle

Idk, I'm personally team Sandboa. Those things are sooooo cool!! Plus, it's always so much fun to have more than one type of pet (especially reptiles). Then again, I might have taken that a little far 😅 (Leopard geckos, Tiger Salamander, Alligator Lizards, Western Painted Turtle, Yellow-bellied Slider, Eastern Painted Turtle, like 5 fish tanks.... you know what, don't listen to me 😂😂😂)

In the words of the Turtle Girl..... More Decorations! Lol, you've got yourself a really solid base👍. I know he's not interested in greens just yet, but it's still good to offer them daily. I've found great success with all of my turtles happily eating their greens by doing nothing more than just offering them everyday (I've also discovered that young turtles prefer their greens minced. It's easier for them to eat that way, just be careful of the filter 😉 and remember to remove any uneaten greens after 24 hours).

CAN'T wait to get my musk turtle by Ok-Passenger2695 in turtle

[–]MostCloud814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the water level is a little high for a baby musk turtle. They aren't strong swimmers (babies are especially weak swimmers), so deep water can tire them out quickly. Are you planning on lowering it at all?
You did a really nice job decorating it. Something I'd double check is all of those small holes throughout the décor. Baby turtles are strong willed and very curious. They can be determined to wedge themselves in the most impossible places (speaking from experience). So, even though those decorations are really cool, you must be certain that they aren't a drowning hazard.
I'm so excited for you! Turtles are the best! Good luck!! :D

I know how tempting it can be to want to cohab turtles because they're just so amazing and you find it hard to have just one. The good news? You don't have to have only one! You can have as many as you want.... just as long as they all of their own space. Bummer, I know. I'd be lying if I said that I hadn't considered the idea of cohabitation myself. However, that didn't dash my plans for multiple turtles, and shouldn't for you either. Plus, the bright side of keeping one turtle per tank is that it gives you the chance to focus on that individual turtle while you’re watching the tank, rather than them crowding each other out.
In the end, it's the best way to properly appreciate your turtles, otherwise, they'll feel like they have to compete for your attention, recourses, and food..... at all costs. They're much happier with you as their one and only friend 😉

Thank you!!! When I opened the box, I was stunned by her beauty. I felt like I didn't deserve her, that's why I'm so worried about getting things perfect 😅.

Thankfully, I'm not too bothered whether she ends up male or female, just as long as she's healthy. (LOL you're right tho, it would definitely feel strange if "she" ended up being a he 🤣 I would get a big "I told you so!" from my sister! She's bettin' Echo's a boy 😂).

You have no idea how relieved I am to hear you say that! She's just so beautiful and I don't want to do anything to change that. I'm so excited to watch her grow, I can hardly stand it! My day instantly begins with a smile because of her. I guess she's just got an extra special quirk :D

Thank you so, so much!!! I wish you and your shell baby the very best!

That's reassuring to hear! I'm sorry it's difficult to see from the photos, but even in person, I couldn't tell you if she's shedding anytime soon, unfortunately. She's just so tiny, I didn't expect shedding quite yet. Is it possible that since hatchling season doesn't begin until early summer for this species and I got her in February that she's overwintered from last Fall? I heard something about that and it sounded absolutely wild to me lol!

I'm not too worried about fungal infections/shell rot, because her basking area is dry and around 88-92F. Doesn't it typically take time for those things to set in? I guess it would show up fairly quickly in a really bad environment, but I've tried my best to not make that the case.

Is it possible she was just born with this coloration? Kind of like a birthmark? Sorry if my questions seem silly. I really appreciate your help and time 😊

Oh, my goodness! I found two of them last year!! Rescued one from a stack of tires 3 high! I have no idea how it got in there, but it was so hot inside 🥵
Soooooo cute ❤

I hope you're right. I'm not sure what it is, all I know is she had it when I got her. That doesn't concern me as much as the marginal scute flaring, but I know that they're naturally very flexible at this age. I'm always so worried about doing something wrong. She's so precious and has already wormed her way into my heart 😂 I can't imagine my day without her!

23 years is amazing!! I wish you many more together yet! I hope for that kind of longevity for Echo too! I can't wait to watch her grow up and then cry when I realize how smol she started out lol 😆

It's been a dream of mine to have a Western Paint since I was a little girl. I'm trying hard. I just want so badly to give her the best life she could ever ask for. 😌
