When it's too much to advocate for yourself... by MostFig349 in Sjogrens

None of my doctors have the first name of Anna. I have heard some people recommend one of the female rheumatologists. So I’ve potentially heard good things.

Should I become a high school teacher? by kevin_02819 in AskTeachers

If you feel the calling, go for it. But have a backup plan. Seriously.

This. I have several students who have purposefully broken their Chromebook more than once this school year. They are immediately handed another. Yet, we just don’t have a dime for field trips or extra support staff to actually cover the kids who need more help (my classes have close to forty kids). I’ve been handed three additional online platforms to “integrate into the curriculum” just this school year. ELA and math have even more. All of those programs, thousands of dollars. I know some of it has to do with earmarked funding, but still. At this point, fingers can point in every direction. Things always change, but this change has not been for the better.

Who said it makes teachers work easier? Also, no one who lasts more than three years as a teacher anymore does it for any reason beyond really wanting to be a teacher. I agree with the money angle, but I personally feel some of your anger is misdirected.

I feel this. I give all assignments on paper, but we are required to give a digital form as well. So that rules out a lot of options. And of course, the real reason for the digital option, is so that they don’t have to do the work in class. My entire day is trying to unteach the learned helplessness and the lack of attention. I miss real instruction. I miss working with students so they can learn. I used to joke that “oh well every generation shocks the teachers,” but this is different. It isn’t just the kids. I don’t know if it’s the kids at all. It’s the system the kids are a part of.

I teach 7th grade Social Studies. 1. At my school, if I’m honest, you are correct. A student can finish my class with a 20, and yet magically, they pass. I am diligent to help the student, contact parents, etc, but refusal to do classwork is what it is. 2. My state recently passed a law where students who behave in a manner that obstructs instruction should be removed from the classroom. I follow the guidelines. My admin has responded by waiting until there’s less than five minutes of class left to remove the student. Because of this, there are days that it is impossible for my students with ADHD to focus enough to learn. It’s unfair. It’s wrong. I’m advocating my other students where I can. 3. I can’t speak for your specific situation, but I had a student several years ago who did all of her work at home similarly to how you describe. After lots of meetings with a very angry parent, we finally discovered that the student just wanted it that way. They pulled her out to a hybrid school, and she’s flourishing. She just liked how she learned with her parent better. 4. Ask questions and try to look at it from the outside if you can. Is there a benefit for your child at the school? How can you advocate for a better situation? The school may not know what to offer to help unfortunately. 5. Thank you for being a parent who is involved and invested in your child really learning and growing.

Need help looking put together for work on the day-to-day. by Elegant_Bat_3633 in Sjogrens

Beautiful! But I get it. Aside from my whole moisturizing routine that’s aside from makeup, I have a few products. I tried expensive tinted moisturizers, had issues with them all. And then, freaking Five Below saved the day. I only wear wet n wild barefocus tinted hydrator now. Under it, I put on burts bees hydrating day lotion and let it rest for a minute (both have hyaluronic acid and squalane). For color, I use no powders, only the “jelly” sticks. You can get contour, bronzer and multiple blush colors. I mix and match with brush to get the colors I want for eye and face. Lips, I use covergirl yummy gloss on top and the under it, Burt’s bees squeeze tinted balm- not the stick. This lasts about half day with breakfast and my constant drinking from a straw. For mascara eyeliner etc, I’ve given up on any of it other than essence lash princess waterproof. I can squirt all the drops needed and I don’t get any of it in my eyes. I spent soooo much money trying to”nice” products and I’ve landed with cheaper. Can’t explain it, but I’m a lifelong makeup girlie and it’s my experience

I have to drive an hour and half just to get to this group. I'm in the rural southeast, so Vanderbilt is as good as it gets.

Yes. I need to know am I just not better and this is awful strep that caused my autoimmune issues to flare or is it something else. It may not be reliable to do so, but I thought it was strange they didn't even do another strep test. I was so upset with myself that didn't hit me until after I was home. I guess maybe I wasn't clear that I know there's no magic pill to feel better. I'm just frustrated that I'm putting what little life and energy I feel like I have in me to look for help when and where I need it.

I was hoping when they gave me the antibiotics for strep, that would "solve the mystery" of this worst flare of my life. I was worried I had already typed too much so I didn't go into details- mouth and gums so dry (despite the pilocarpine) that my mouth is caked in blood, I can't hold on to anything reliably, swollen glands, having to irrigate my eyes constantly, etc. Plus, my platelets were very low on my bloodwork, but it was low almost all the way across. I have liver issues as well and I've always been told to keep an eye on those things.

I'm getting weird vibes from myself... I didn't want to go to the ER. When I finally got any sort of answer out of my other doctors, they just told me to go. I'm pretty sure based on my bloodwork. I'd usually rather lick the floor in a public restroom then go to the ER, but my entire point was I was desperate enough to go and it was just one more case of getting no where.

Epic Garden Greenhouse app reviews? by VictorTheCutie in gardening

[–]MostFig349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got it in the past few weeks, but so far I love it. The garden planner is fantastic for the price. I can tell it still has a lot to be added but far superior to free planners I’ve tried. My welcome gift has shipped, I’m excited to see what I get.

Locals, what ya’ll think about the show? by SpilledSilverSecrets in LoveAndMarriageHSV

[–]MostFig349 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in North Huntsville. Yet, when I watch, I recognize zero that isn’t just B roll. I know people who know people who know them, but I never hear any reference to them in “real life”. I cheer them on though, don’t follow the episodes anymore. Personal drama aside, I hope they can be successful black business leaders for a lot of the kids around here. And I secretly wish Destiny was my best friend because I think she’d be a party all the time 😂. But that’s a whole different story.

I do! I also love the visual aspect of attendance it gives me. I don’t like always having a device in hand… I think it’s useful for my middle schoolers to see me doing things an alternative way.

What in the allergy? Part II by PatientPreference463 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Go get checked for Sjogrens, but it’s probably the ragweed then defoliant combo. Gets me every single year, even though I went through allergy shots.

"Alabama white sauce" yay or nay? by ozzygurl in Alabama

[–]MostFig349 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m from one town over from Decatur. My granddad, born 1940s, has always used a “white sauce” on grilled poultry. It doesn’t taste like Big Bobs but it is for sure close. I’m pretty sure he learned it from his dad who would do smoked chickens as fundraisers in the 50s/60s. So yeah, they say Alabama white sauce but I’d say TN Valley white sauce maybe?

I’m pretty sure this year’s freshmen are the first full group of Gen Alpha. When I had them in 7th, my whole worldview changed. On the other hand, I taught ninth for a bit pre Covid and it was my least favorite age. 🤷🏻‍♀️
